Frankly I think it's even deeper...most of Europe, especially the Eurozone, seems more like vassal states of US economic imperialism. In that sense, I don't think they even have the ability to challenge US foreign policy in any meaningful way...although do they even want to? France, Britain, Belgium, Germany...these are all "ex"-colonial powers and the US system of extracting material wealth with financial imperialism via IMF/WTO and draconian IP laws seems to benefit the Old World aristocracy just fine. Steal the developping worlds resources while preventing their progress through technology transfer (China broke the system by outfoxing the Empire, hence the saber rattling). This model requires enforcers to keep the less compliant nations at bay. Iran fought back and Iraq stopped behaving politely so Israel and Saudi Arabia box in Iran and Russia to an extent and Iraq is a smoking hellhole. The US supported South Africa during apartheid for a very similar reason vis a vis continental Africa until it was so hard to justify they finally had to back off. We can learn a lesson from that example. The price must outweigh the benefit...for the US and for Europe.

Its very true what YV says about education. I also studied Econ at univ in UK in a very left leaning city. I realised many years later that the course taught me zero about economic theory. What we leanr in university is how to successfully function on the cogs within the captialist wheel - whether a business person, a banker, an accountant or financial analyst. Thats it. All theory that they teach is a complete load of horseshlt bcos as YV says its all based on assumptions that do not exist, nor can ever exist in reality. Is not the real world. I only ever begun to learn about this when I read, under my own volition, a series of works by Harold Shutt on the critiques of capitalism and a model for a better future. Ironically Shutt is an economics professor in UK, but his books are terrific and I would reommend them to anyone who wants to understand the realities of economics in the world.
@Windband1

So true! It reminds me of the bullshit theory in capitalism "supply and demand". As you know it says, as demand grows greater than supply price increases. WRONG. If demand grows greater than supply, you simply run out of the item! It has no effect on price. That is called PROFITEERING!! That is based on GREED. There's no economic theory there!

What to do about inequality: If 100,000 of us were to form 400 groups of 250, and each group were assigned to remove the head of one of the 400 richest people, that might encourage the rest of the oligarchs to improve their behavior. I advocate for a "Three State Solution." Gaza and the West Bank should each declare themselves as independent nations, adopt a Constitution, and hold elections, then send out diplomats to get recognition and to join the UN as a nation. In the future then a Federation of Gaza and the West Bank could be considered. But the bottom line is that the Palestinian people should not wait for Israel and the US to "give permission" for them to declare their independence.

Yanis's explanation as to why things are as they are is accurate but put in complex terms so to exclude the majority from understanding? To be simply put as follows: we r born with different categories of chemistry? Let's say some are more inclined to be hot n some cold blooded? Some will do anything for money for excess wealth? Even kill others to maintain or improve their position? Unfortunately the educational system over the centuries has been unable to correct these conflicts? Once the wrong people are in power it's hard to change the status quo as they will always want to control it by using the majority of re election to the detriment of minorities? Power to control corrupts so the love of power n money is the root of all evil? Or is money the root of all evil? Probably not the root of all evil of all evil is probably education at school uni media etc? Education is unable to override wars famine homelessness etc? Eg education is unable to do away with inborn bad chemistry? Really for millenia has there been improvement in human chemistry?

Finklestein says maybe in several decades delaying what should have been done decades ago. This is controlled opposition that is doing more damage to the palestinian cause than the Likud party and hard Zionists combined. I want to hear from palestinian leaders snd ordinary Palestinians in palestine and around the world. These speakers should refer to them and even have them sitting next to them. Yes, the people have the power Yanis, the power to change the system. But not from the inside. System change never came from within. Parliamentarians will never vote to change the systems they operate to their own advantage. We cannot 'vote' through the ballot box for change. The only way is to rebel, for sufficient numbers of the population to take to the streets. That isn't going to happen in Australasia where the masses are comfortable, and it will be very difficult in Europe where there are also sufficient numbers of comfortable people. Perhaps in the USA? Chris Hedges thinks so but it could take 20 years. This is a long struggle, a lifetime struggle, and from a climate perspective there isn't time to delay 20 years, we need change now. Therein is the paradox. The climate won't wait and environmental systems are changing daily. Solutions are not to be found in yesterday's systems, but in the new systems the people are making today. Extinction Rebellion is right; follow the science and act as if the climate emergency is an emergency. Citizens' Assemblies are the democratic way forward.

The biggest mistake people make is not understanding evolution. As the environment changes, and the environment is always changing, all systems must either adapt and change or die. This applies to biological, social, and cultural systems. This is probably why so many "civilizations" have perished -- they failed to adapt and change to keep pace with environmental change. Technology has changed our environment at a very rapid pace, but societal change has been very slow, and it's sometimes been set back, and this can only lead to the end of our society, assuming climate extinction doesn't happen first. Economists love to claim economics is a science, but in reality, it's a religion with phony equations as their psalms and epistles. btw: the Pope knows there's no god, but he will never come out and admit to the fact.

It's already happening. This is why Human Rights Watch and Israel's own human rights organization B'tselem have called Israel and not just the Occupied Territories an apartheid regime or state. In a battle over land, resources and the people's relationship to them, whatever is going on not in terms of statements, public opinion polls, etc. but from the ground up, is what is most revealing of the directional force of political reality. This has nothing to do with what people say they want and everything to do with the impossibility of the "two state solution." I've spent a lot of time there doing research and seen the changes over time. What "just won't happen" today is a Palestinian state.It may be historically unfortunate but it's absolutely the case.

This double standards is nothing new, remember Rosa Luxembourg, how she was murdered when the social democrats joined the right-wing to form government in Germany after the first world war? They in turn were butchered or at least imprisoned some 16 years later by the rise of the Nazis. Extreme? Considering the killing of innocent children, women, men, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters in Palestine, not at all an extreme comparison. Or the uprising in Warsaw by the Jews against the Nazis (As Dr Finklesteine compares). Divide and rule is always the main ambition for a colonial power.

Anyone who talks about apartheid in reference to Israel is either ignorant or antisemitic. You, Yanis, talk about lack of context in reporting of events. How about practicing what you preach? Why is there a wall? Is it to practice apartheid or is it in response to a bombing campaign that targeted Jewish civilians in Israel? Israelis did not want a wall. They wanted Arabs from the West Bank to be able to enter Israel and they wanted to travel to the West Bank in freedom. There could have been peace after the '67 war which Arabs started, but the PA had other plans. The Druze, an Arabic-speaking minority, are very happy in Israel. The Muslims could have the same situation, but they don't want it.
