To be honest, he was right about leaving when he did. Majority of the writers left because they felt they did everything. Simpsons is successful, but its quality has never peaked the seasons they wrote.

Brooks shielded it from the usual consequence of brilliance: being attacked by idiots. scratching their brows in a futile attempt to comprehend the situation. when the actors kept asking for more money, they should have said 'okay but half of what you're asking goes to the writers' and maybe things would have been okay. then they just.. _kept asking for more money_ as the show went into decline.
