I have two of these, and I've found them *most* useful for drilling... I build a lot of livestock shelters/tractors, and as far as I'm concerned there is no modern tool better suited for making shallow pilot holes for hinges, hasps, latches and hooks. Light, fast, precise, and powered with one hand leaving the other free to hold the hardware in place.

That is a great "cool tool"! Both vintage and modern, at the same time - totally my interest! Thanks for showing us it!

Essentially there's three different size of Yankees: 1. Small 133 or 135 - 5.5mm diameter shaft 2. Medium 130 - 7mm diameter shaft 3. Large 132 - 8mm diameter shaft You can make a Medium size adapter from a long 1/4 hex bit holder.

I went to the local 2nd hand store yesterday to buy a bunch of used screw drivers to make my own Yankee bits, today I ordered all three sizes of adapter thanks to you, now what am I going to do with a bunch of toasted screw drivers lol Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for this video, I saw the adapter online but the listings I found only mentioned the magnet, not the collar

I got as far as making an adaptor which then broke after a year or so. About to order some of these adaptors from Axminster (UK based)
@alext88282 жыл бұрын
Why not just grind down a set of bits? Make them round. Put in the D shape and notch. You need 5.5mm, 7mm, and 8mm.
@Tom896782 жыл бұрын
@@alext8828 Much less work to have an adaptor and be able to use cheap commodity hex bits when they wear out. My existing bits are exactly what you're describing.

Which Hex Adapter option from Lee Valley tools, did you choose for your Millers Falls No. 430; was it the 5.5mm (7/32"), 7mm( 9/32"), or 8mm (5/16")?

That's awesome. I have one that belonged to my dad. I have no idea how old it is. Add a set of hex drive drill bits and it would be a fantastic off-grid tool. EDIT: Does anyone know of a drill bit chuck adapter for a 3/8 drive speed handle?

Do you think that I can use this in my old fashioned silver steel craftsman drill? I want to go from a chuck to hex. Can't seem to find one anywhere. They all want to take me from hex to chuck and not the other way.

Why don't they make these anymore? I guess impact guns replaced em.

Which is silly. I'd imagine there are environments where screwdrivers like the Yankee are still of value and use. Potentially explosive environments for sure where power anything is a concern.
@jic13 жыл бұрын
@@rico76 If I was in an environment like that, I'm not sure I'd be much more comfortable slamming a ratchet mechanism down a long metal shaft. But yes, they're still useful, in fact you can still buy new ones (not Yankee branded). I just bought one that has a 1/4" hex collet, no adapter needed.

@@jic1 What brand did you buy?
@jic13 жыл бұрын
@@encapsulatio The one I bought was branded Silverline, but I believe that the same screwdriver (or ones very like it) can be found under various brands.
