Thanks, very helpful! I just want to make a couple of small starter holes to put some screws into a wood cabinet to attach a small hook holder and people telling me I need a $200 drill for it were starting to frustrate me! Was looking at a hand cranked type and push drills came up as options but I had no idea what the mechanism was. This was very interesting and helpful in showing how to use one but also what to beware of, eg oiling it etc to keep the action smooth!

Hi Wyatt, my only beef with cordless tools is the planned obsolescence of the batteries and the high cost to replace them... Nothing beats a tool that lasts 100 years and never costs you a cent after the original purchase! Thanks!!! 😃👍

Scout Crafter You always come up with some really Old School cool tools. I absolutely remember these what I called hand push drill drivers.Back in the 1960s.,these were a popular Tool. My Dad got my Grandfathers Wood Working Tools after he passed away. There were 2 of these Push Drill Drivers. One was similar in length the ones in your video and had the Drill Bits inside the handle.The other Drill Drivers shaft was at least 8 to 12 inches long that had Flat Tipped Screwdriver Bits inside the handle. As anyone knows that screwing in Slotted Screws with an ordinary Screwdriver that it’s not easy to hold the tip of the Screwdriver and holding center on the Screw. What I remember about these Screwdriver bits was when driving a slotted screw in. The Bit would hold center on the Slotted Screw. Unfortunately these Drill/ Screwdrivers are long gone.

Unfortunately, I have to use cordless battery powered drills for my field job, but your point is well taken. Like you and many others, I am so done with crappy, planned obsolesence (it seems) with small tools. It is so worth it to find an old tool and resurrect it like new or close to it. There is a level of satisfaction that money could never buy.

I am a Industrial/Commercial Electrician (26 years), I didn't know these push drills existed. Never seen one before. WOW. . .. . .The company I used to work for used to occasionally do jobs at a Coal Gasification (Coal-Gas) Treatment plant in Tennessee. No power tools are allowed inside the plant and I do not own an old fashion hand drill. . . . . . . I have had to litterally drill holes in the wall holding my drill bit with a pair of channel locks while tapping the end of the bit with a hammer as I slowly turned it little by little with each tap (not fun). . . .. I sure could've used one of those push drills. (((((I will definately be looking on Ebay for one of these in case I ever find myself in that situation ever again. . . . . I have a small collection of these. I just bought one similar to the one you cleaned up at the last tractor show. Though the top rotates to open different sized holes to release the bits. No bits in it though.☹️. But of the other ones I have, there are a couple really old ones. They are patented in the late 1800's! Now I assume they are not really that old since they could use the patent for years, but they are still really cool. The fancier one is a ratcheting screwdriver, and push drill that is reversible either way. The chuck is the quick change type, but you pull the end down, not push it up. If I can get a decent pic of it, I'll email you.

Thanks, Scout and I've fooled with these but don't own one. Don't know why either. Goofy I guess. I did have a Makita drill/driver that did just like you said and died. I threw the drill motor, batteries and charger in the trash, did a little work on the case and it now holds my corded DeWalt 3/8ths and accessories. When the batteries die on the impact I'll replace them because it's just too handy not to have around, for me anyway. 70 here and with lo humidity it feels like 70. VERY nice! THanks again, Pal!

You're right but that'll be the way it'll go I'd say. They ought to have an atomic battery by then to help clean up the environment with some more of that 'cheap' energy. Yeah right. I like Makita stuff but about all mine now are Dewalt and Milwaukee. I do have one BIG compound Makita miter saw that weighs a ton but it's a good saw. I've just got the one cordless impact and it was a refurb from CPO but I like refurbs. I'm believing I might be one the way I feel sometimes. Take care, Scout and GBWYall!

I notice that you're aware of the relationship that Stanley had with this firm. I was not until this video. I collect Stanley drill press/machinist vises. They range from a ~4" to 1-5/8" jaw width, swivels and stationary. It's almost difficult to describe the scale of the tools, as the size goes up substantially with every 5/8 increment in jaw width. Love 'em. I'd noticed that quite a few Yankee vises look exactly like the Stanleys. Been looking for a factory-mint Yankee for several months, but I digress. Do you know whether Stanley made the Yankee vises or was it the other way around?
@ScoutCrafter6 жыл бұрын
You know Felix, Stanley was a crude manufacturer, as they grew they bought up lots of smaller businesses like North Brothers and when they did many times they just rebranded the tools with the Stanley name. Many times they left the factories almost intact with the same personnel and even middle management. That's why Stanley and Craftsman had such huge lines of quality tools, the only difference is Craftsman would just pay the company to make their tools where as Stanley didn't want the competition! I'm not sure about the Yankee Vise though, I never see them around! Thanks!!!!!!!

If I only drilled little tiny holes in wood then that's the only drill I'd own. Unfortunately, most of my work is in steel so cordless drills are my friend. Still, after 5 years, I've replaced the drill twice anyway so I guess batteries aren't my real problem. I do own a couple of those Yankees but don't have any bits, guess I need to go shopping. Thanks for sharing, good video!

Hello George, I own a couple Milwaukee Cordless tools and like them but I know I will never get my money's worth from them because they were expensive! Corded drills are my favorite! (and a good extension cord!) LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!
@EVILDR2355 жыл бұрын
I have about 5 of those. Two are marked BELL SYSTEM. The last couple of years I have found lots of tools marked BELL SYSTEM. I wonder if the phone company sold off a lot of their older tools ? The drills seem pretty common, but bits can be hard to find. They can be bought new, but they are expensive.

Chuck, you are so right! New they are super expensive!

I'm not sure I can agree with you on cordless drills haha. They're one of the handiest tools I've ever touched and they get pretty well used in our shop. I tried using one of these once, but the bits got overheated and bent very easily. I think they were cheap Chinese plain carbon steel, already dull, so once they got a bit of heat in them they just bent right away.
@ScoutCrafter6 жыл бұрын
Hello Metal Butcher- The bits are the key with these drills, a good sharp bit is essential for proper performance of these push drills. If they hit metal or brick they dull out quickly and won't perform. As for cordless drills, I have a nice Milwaukee set and no matter how nice they are in 8 years they will be boat anchors unless I plop down another $50 for a replacement battery,.. Meanwhile I have a corded drill that will out perform the Cordless drill in every way except portability and it is over 40 years old... I hate tools that don't last! 😃👍. Thanks!!!!

These are a handy tool. Bet you could think of how the boy scouts could have each had one. I have watched guys trying to use Swiss Army Knives and other multi tools as drills. It's like come on guys the right tool has been around for a century. One of these and a Speedy Stitcher can repair even the heavy leather of a saddle much less heavy canvas and nylon.

Hello 57W! You are so right! I would bring down a bunch of old tools to the meeting and let the scouts just use them! They loved it! Never realized things could be done without electricity or battery! LOL Thanks!!!!!

Great video on one of my favorite tools. Sadly I was 55 before finding out how great a Yankee screwdriver is. I really like the looks of the all metal handled ones. I see a lot of plastic or wood handled ones on ebay from North Brothers. I really like the looks of the all metal ones like you have and hope to find one. Are the metal ones older?
@ScoutCrafter6 жыл бұрын
Hello Lee! No, these are just a different model, made mostly for drilling... The other ones were screwdrivers too! They made these until 2004!!! There are so many out there!!! Thanks!!!

LOL Hi Jim! Egg beater drills are fun to have in the collection but push drills you will actually use!!!! They are that good! Thanks!!!!!!!!
@jimjohnston31886 жыл бұрын
ScoutCrafter One of the eggbeaters is an old STANLEY like the one my father used when I was a kid. A little sentimental value there. The other one just looks neat. You are absolutely correct about these old drills, there is a time and place where using a manual drill is preferable. I wish more people had an appreciation for these old well made, well thought out tools. Really enjoy your videos .

Been seeing a lot of imitation spiral/ratchet screwdrivers coming from China on Ebay. No idea how they stack up compared to the US made stuff but Im not seeing any new US made models anymore on ebay for some reason aside from the new old stock (yankee, Philips, etc.)

I have not seen one before maybe because of egg whisk drills were more popular. What is the advantage and disadvantage over the egg whisk drills? Maybe it was down to price and with egg whisk drills you can use ordinary drill bits.

Hello Tony! Even though I own about 20 Crank drills I have never enjoyed using them or never found them intuitive to use, I always felt another hand was needed! LOL However with this push drill it is a dream come true... So easy to use and works great! I never reach for my crank drills but still use my 41's! You have to get one! Thanks!!!!!!
