I wrote the same thing about how the contract could age. Hopefully it can age similarly to how Mike Mussina's contracts with the Yankees aged. He had a couple of bad years but finished strong with the 20 wins. He had 15 wins when he was 37. I could see Fried kind of being a lefty version especially contract wise and how it ages. They both throw big curveballs and throw 91-94. Not to mention, they're great athletes as well. Mussina won several gold gloves and Fried has three. They were both good hitters. Fried had a career .214 average. Mussina had a .173 career average and had competitive at bats from time to time. Of course, pitchers don't bat anymore but the fact they could both hit shows that they are probably good athletes. Indeed they are good athletes. Talking about Fried now and Mussina when he pitched.

Solid analogy, I’d be more than satisfied with a mussina-esque tenure also.

8 years is a lot for him. 5 seemed sane. I guess he had multiple bidders and the Yankees went the 8th year after missing Soto. Chronic blisters, forearms, hamstring, and Tommy John surgery. He breaks down at the end of the season, which is why he seems more injury prone than it might appear. The troubling thing with him was that his breaking stuff wasn't as effective in 2024. His walks were up and his strikeouts were down because he wasn't as effective as he's been in the past. His xBA was up. As a ground ball pitcher you have to wonder with the Yankees defense if this was a good pick up. Grade: B-

You won't find a bigger Max Freid supporter than I, but even I can agree he isn't worth that contract. Yankee fans, besides the realstic ones, are just trying their best to stay positive to make up for losing Soto. That doesn't mean he isn't a good pitcher, when healthy he can be sub-ace type pitcher, but staying healthy is exactly his problem now. We Braves fans know he's only one or two more injuries away from being out the league. Which is exactly why the Braves have spent 1st round draft picks on pitchers, traded for Sale, and signed Lopez. Fried was out the door after his first few starts after coming back from that first injury, which was two seasons ago. Hoping the absolute best for Fried, I hope he goes out there and wins a Cy Young (and I would still absolutely adore him), but realistically his top pitcher days are pretty much over. Yankees paying him ace caliber money, for eight years, might flip that franchise upside down in the near future.
