Yanmar Test Drive; Thinking of Buying A New Larger Compact Tractor, Things to Consider

Tractor Time with Tim

6 жыл бұрын

Tractor Time with Tim is considering buying a new bigger tractor - if the finance committee will agree. We looked at two different Yanmar models, the YT235 and the larger YT 347. We want to keep all options open before making a decision this big.

Yanmar is a Japanese company, founded in 1912, that invented the first small practical diesel engine. The company began building tractors in the 1960's, built its 10 millionth diesel engine in 1992, provides all the diesel engines for all John Deere compact tractors, built entire tractors for John Deere, and is a major manufacturer of marine diesels and construction equipment. Yanmars are extremely reliable and a hallmark of Japanese engineering. That said, the Yanmar salesman you visited was not knowledgeable about the integrated Hydro Mechanical Transmission (iHMT) on the YT347. The innovative design puts more power to the ground than an HST and has infinite adjustability for speed and RPM. Additionally, it's a highly serviceable cartridge design that's removable from the back of the tractor and does not require the tractor to be broken in half should it ever require servicing. Unlike most tractor brands these days, Yanmar does not rebrand or outsource their manufacturing. They build the entire tractor, including the engine, from the ground up, and put their true name on it. Yanmar is one of the few purebreds left in the tractor industry.

Tractor Time with Tim there's quite a bit of info on the IHMT on line, throughout the video I was thinking to my self the same thing that John mentioned, a lot of "I think" in the rundown didn't point out many features of the tractor and the rear axle design, is very common on compacts these days. The reduction can made simpler and it also moves the 3pt hitch arms and lift points. By moving it closer in on the tractor you can lift more then if it were further out. ( less pivot on the rear axle center line)

Darn good advice to new or experienced tractor owner. COLD out there, so you need a heated cab (kidding). All stated points are on the mark. Too big and heavy a tractor may mar clients' yards. Cannot drive over septic systems (yikes). What dealership is nearest you, Tim? I went with Massey b/c the points you stated. The dealership is 3.5 miles away. Service is great. Good Christian family; their daddy is the preacher (extremely fair & honest). Dealer's been here over 45 years. Great video Tim & Christy! Thanks; thumbs up.

My dad was looking at a 235 but it was a bit too big for us and there's no dealer near. Instead he went with the smaller John Deere 1025r. The dealer is about 10 minutes from our house. He loves it and finds every excuse to use it. He finally let me drive it for the first time today and it was pretty fun! Now I know why he always wants to use it!

Tim, you are spot on with your evaluation of what's important when buying a tractor- I agree 100% that dealer location, longevity and their customer service record are VERY important, then comes manufacturer reputation for customer service. For me those are most important. That being said, I recently noticed that there is a store franchise in the NE called Rural King who is selling RK Tractors (rebranded TYM) and they are impressive machines and very inexpensive. They will be serviced at the Rural King Dealership. The reason I mention them is that in 2000 I bought a Hyundai and they gave a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, any problem I ever had in 10 years (very few) they took care of with a smile! Now I have three friends who bought Chrysler and no matter what they returned to the dealer for they were harassed like the problem was their fault. I'll pay the extra money just don't be accommodating when I want to buy but indifferent when I need service! Thanks Tim! BTW- I spent 5 years in Sales and the enthusiasm of that Yanmar dealer was not very impressive.

Tim, from what could see from the video, those final drive units are simply gear reduction hubs that move the drive flange off the centerline of the axle. Military trucks made good use of them in the past to gain ground clearance without excessive suspension height. They are called portal axles and are very strong. Mercedes Unimogs are great examples of portal axle utility vehicles. Yanmar did a need truck by clicking the hub back to the 3o'clock or 4o'clock position to move the tires back to get a longer wheel base out of a shorter frame. Hope that helps. Check out some unimogs (you might just end up with that instead of a tractor!) Or, look at the John Deere 4series spray rig.....that is portal to the extreme!

I wanted a kubota and went to purchase one from a local dealer. He showed us the inventory, went through the credit check, etc... we ordered the tractor we wanted which we would have to wait for. He had the same attitude as the Yanmar guy. As we were leaving, I went to shake his hand. He put his hand out like he didn't want to bother, nor did he even look at me while shaking my hand. He literally turned his head away. This I felt was very disrespectful. I went home, thought about it, called the dealer and cancelled the order. Dealer interaction is critical to me. If I don't like you for whatever reason, how can I trust you and what you say? I would not buy that Yanmar based on the sales person. His attitude was poor, his knowledge of the tractor seemed average to poor. So service, I would imagine would have been poor also.

This is the only constant I’ve heard when comparing tractors. They are all great, it’s the dealer and support/maintenance you get from them that makes the difference in long term satisfaction with the machine. I just bought my first modern diesel tractor this past week (Yanmar SA425) and I could not be happier with the machine and the folks at the dealership who helped me through the process. If I had the same experience you had I would be looking elsewhere.

last july i purchased my first tractor and ended up with a new holland boomer 35, added a snow blower and pallet forks and it has saved my back this winter. with 120+ inches of snow this winter it did a damn good job even without a cab, a bit chilly snowblowing in -10f but better than 4+ hours walking behind a snow blower. i chose the new holland as the kubota of equal spec was nearly 2 times the price of the new holland. the deere dealer wouldnt even talk to me after an hour at the deere dealer looking around while the sales people stood around in the shop i moved on. the new holland dealer brought me out the keys to try 4 or 5 different tractors and including a nice little massey ferguson. being in potato country there is a lot of tractor knowledge up here. i started with 0 and have learned a lot with much left to learn. love your vids and the thoughtful approach you take to things while injecting humor.

There are quit a few independent videos on youtube comparing all the small utility tractors, JD, kubita, mahindra, new holland, ive watched most and the kubota comes out pretty well with or without cab. Even with a canopy that is niether with or without could be worth adding for minimum protection against weather and stuff comming out of a high bucket. I will look firward to seeing what you decide on. My Jd 2035 has that type of rear axle its called a highlift, they turn 90° so as to raise the tractor, the front also has long kingpins that are ajustable too to keep it level.

I moved up from a Kubota B2620 to a JD 2038R. It may not be a big enough size move for you but I'm very pleased with the extra capacity of the JD. I had a Curtis cab on the Kubota and while it was great in the Maine winters I did not like it the rest of the year as I found it was "in the way" during the summer every time I got close to a low hanging branch while bush hogging. I have an Original Tractor cab for the JD and will be able to take it off if it ever stops snowing.

All products Appeared to be the same in function, however my Yanmar dealer had 4 times the staff working a quarter size establishment with a steady flow of customers, while the others had a staff of Two and no customers. Plus the ergonomics of the sub compact Yanmar fits my body. Plus the ten year warranty feels like a nice safety net.

Yeah, that was funny. Good points about the dealer relationship. That's probably the most important factor that new tractor owners overlook when purchasing for the first time. I could've bought a Massey Ferguson for much less than I paid for my John Deere but the dealer was over an hour away and the salesman was very similar to the one in your video! Don't even get me started on the Kubota dealer...

I truly appreciate your videos. I used to do videos and know the hours it takes to plan, shoot and edit for the quality you provide. I also had a 3720 cab JD with many impliments. About 3 yrs ago, health issues forced me to sell all my JD and video stuff. In the summer of 2016, Jesus repaired my failing heart and gave me a renewed life. I began wanting a tractor again. After looking at the current JD line, the 1 family just didn't appeal to me. They were nothing like the 3720. I decided to buy the Yanmar 324 with a back hoe and although my Yamnar dealer is 1 hour away, they have gone out of their way to provide both on site and dealership service. I do miss my "green" friend, but Big Red has proven to be one great machine. I also agree with your open station cmments. Yes, the cab is comfy... but the open station has its advantages too. The biggest advantage I've found is a greater awareness of my impliments in relationship to the work area. This makes working in tight situations a lot easier, as you and Christie already know. John Deere is a great tractor, but my Yanmar has proven to be great also. Just not that many dealers around.

Don't know if they sell in America, but I have a Deutz-Fahr Agrokid 230. Its between both Yanmar tractors you have seen I guess. Its 50hp, lift capacity is 1.200 kg with or without cab ... I like mine, but thats like with the tiller you buy, you always love the one you bought :)

No dought, those YANMAR ENGINES are so fine. I have a 424TLB and it will amaze you what it can do. It sets up higher than others to keep you out of the weeds and give you lots of ground clearance. The FEL will lift 1200 lb and the 3 pt. hitch will handle 60" implements very well, tillers, box blades, brush cutters etc. Not to mention the backhoe attachment will dig a 6' vertical hole. I'm saying you just can't go wrong plus you don't have to break the bank.

i have an 87 yanmar 226D with a JD cab. it has 3 spd on the trans with clutch then 3 spd + revers on the column, (clutchless) has separate brake pedals but currently bolted together, also if its spinning there is a pedal that locks the rear axle, and of course the loader and pto.

I'm in the exact opposite situation... have a Kioti NX6010 right now which I have been VERY pleased with, but looking for something light and small with turf tires to do small lawn work. Really considering the 1025r with backhoe and autoconnect deck... seems like a really nice setup!

My 4044R has a Yanmar engine and just like you said it starts right up, all the time. I looked at Yanmar tractors and everything else Kubota, New Holland, Kioti, TYM, etc as I am fortunate to live in a big ag area with lots of choices. Since I tend to keep things for a really, really long time my concern is with parts and support for this major purchase 10+ years after the sale. I ended up with only 2 real choices - John Deere and Kubota, all the rest were either to new or had come & gone several times over the years (New Holland, Yanmar).

Kubotas are really nice and was leaning towards the L4060 but after trying one out for a few days I just could not get used to the treadle-pedal. After a while my foot, ankle and knee would just ache no matter how I adjusted the seat, steering wheel, etc. Then I tried the John Deere 4044R and it just felt right. All the controls in the right place, comfortable and really useful bells & whistles - cruise, auto throttle, hitch assist (a really nice option when using 3pt implements), and many others.

I noticed something on the YT347 that I had not considered prior to your video. The lift height is very good, but at full extension, the bucket seems so close to the front bumper, you would have to put the tractor right up against the trailer bed to make use of the maximum height. I realize that by keeping the loader arms shorter, you are increasing the lift capacity, but is it practical if you can't project the load far enough ahead of you...I'm still inclined to the Kubota cab model used, of all the machines you have considered. Gosh, it sure is fun spending your money for you !

Thanks for the review and advice about the dealer aspects. I have been debating between the JD 2 series and the YT235. I was particularly impressed that the Yanmar had significantly more implement flow than the JD. What is your opinion on that? Keep up the great videos and good luck on your search!

I like lots of hydraulic flow. Having said that, in this size range, I think attachability, dealer support, resale, etc is much more important than small differences in specs.

Tim, look into Branson’s. The company makes a very solid and reliable tractor for a quite reasonable price. I recently purchased a 7845C. It came with a large comfortable cab and more features than I can list. I paid about the same price for it as the Yanmar dealer was asking for that 347 and the Branson is a 78 hp model that weighs about 7000 lbs. it was a bigger tractor than I really need but I’ve had 2 smaller ones and each left me wishing I had a bigger one with more power. They also make a 55 hp model 5520 with cab for about 32k. Also loaded with features.

Not a name you hear when you talk sub or compact homestead tractors. I don’t even know that I have a dealership that carried them, but I’m going to look. Also, given that and that you apparently get much more tractor for less money, makes quality now an issue. The old adage, you get what you pay for, might apply here. But I appreciate the suggestion and I’m definitely going to poke about a bit to see what I can find around me. Thanks.

I bought a used yanmar about 10 years ago (22 horse). Very tough tractor. However, the bucket arms were not secure and kept breaking the bolts and stripping the cast iron threads. I finally had them welded to the frame and problem solved. Newer models are probably different.

Kubota/New Holland and John Deere were the only dealerships close to us for considering a tractor. The kubotas were out of the price range with the attachments we were looking for, and the new Hollands were too big. They're both at the same dealer. It's a Kubota/new holland dealer. We went with the 1025r. Economically made more sense and we liked the features of it. Had there been a mahindra or yanmar dealer near us could it have been different? I wonder myself

Have you ever given the thought of a skid steer instead of a conventional tractor? Skid steers are relatively small but outperform a regular tractor as far as front end loader and attachments. You’ve already got Cassy, so I’d say you have the backhoe end of it covered as it’ll dig circles around any 3 point backhoe in the 35-45 hp range! Just food for thought! Oh, and you’ll need a bigger truck and probably a higher GVWR trailer, regardless. Don’t forget about transporting it!

If your thinking skidsteer then you need to be thinking takeuchi. I've worked of cats, case, takeuchi, bobcat, and johndeere. From a mechanics stand point I would run from a deere and a case. Ignore the bobcat and the cat because of some stupid design issues. And only bother considering a takeuchi.
