Interview by Julien Zodo with Yann Dedet, author of the book "The Zero Spectator. Conversation on editing", published in 2020.
Yann Dedet is one of the most famous montage directors of the last quarter of the 20th century. Since 1971 he has worked with such directors as François Truffaut, Philippe Garrel, Maurice Pialat, Cédric Kahn and Dušan Makavejev. He has over 100 films to his credit, including La Nuit américaine (in which he also starred as an actor), Sous le soleil de Satan, Lady Chatterley (nominated for the César Award for Best Editing). In 2012, Dedet, together with Laure Guerdette, was awarded the César Award for Best Editing for the film Polisse.
Yann Dedet on his childhood: "Thanks to the Paillard-Bolex 8mm camera I was given when I was eleven, I quickly abandoned my studies and soon enough found myself in the Saint-Cloud cinematographic printing lab."
