My interpretation of the Fuheng and Yingluo dynamic is that he was intrigued by her willingness to talk back to him, as well as the fact that she appeared to be completely disinterested in him as opposed to all these other fangirls. Yingluo has better things to do with her time, and I think there’s something to be said for some guys liking the thrill of the chase (even though I doubt that’s how Fuheng himself would put it). Basically, her lack of interest made him interested because it was a refreshing change. He seemed annoyed by the other maids more than anything.
@KC-ne1vi7 ай бұрын
-This show is great at characterizing people very quickly and efficiently: the Emperor's snark, Yingluo's smarts, Gao's arrogance and the Empress' kindness. Also, same as in Ruyi, look at the hair: Gao's hair ornaments are very flashy, while the Empress' are more understated, but still regal. Also, the Empress pre-wakeup call only had a few flowers in her hair, while her return sees her sporting diancui (cloisonne kingfisher feather) ornaments and phoenixes. (She also wears a lot of ronghua, or velvet flowers, which were handmade by the costumers based off of real historical artifacts). -Yu is another interesting character to watch--she has a similar arc to Hailan, but she's more understated as a secondary character. (She's still from the Keliyete clan but her given name is 'Ayan' here). -Gao, historically, was said to be on good terms with the Empress, making their relationship in RRLitP more accurate---both shows play a bit fast and loose with history, which is fine, it makes for a better story. I love her pearl cape--it's a great display of her character's pride and showiness. It's based off of one Dowager Empress Cixi, who famously loved pearls, wore, which apparently had 3,500 of them. -Another small costume detail is the yajin, or 'pressed collar', an ornament that is worn by women on the collar to prevent it from fluttering in the wind. Everyone wears one--the maids are smaller, but if you look you can see Yingluo's is white with a small flower. The consorts have fancier ones with jewels and precious stones--Chun and Xian's are jade--and the ED's is a string of Buddhist beads. -In the show (and I swear I'm not making this up), the reason the tree Yingluo hits is venerated is because when Qianlong went on one of his undercover expeditions, he did not perspire despite the heat of summer, because the spirit of the tree accompanied him and gave him shade. Took me a few minutes to fully grasp that concept when I first watched it (and the fact that he was ready to flog a maid over punching a tree). I think he only let her go because he, too, was stymied by the whole 'itching a tree' thing. -The ED is also similar to ZhenHuan (again, a bit more understated), right down to the 'I want grandkids!'. She jabs at him about the fact that, despite personally picking Shu and granting her a title (her maiden name was 'Nalan', so presumably she would've been called that instead of 'Shu'), he hasn't visited her once, or even seem to remember her. (Poor Shu. As annoying as she is, I also find her kind of cute. Maybe lingering affection for Ruyi!Shu?) -The Emperor placing Yonglian as the Crown Prince was a huge deal, mainly because (due to shenanigans with his father Yongzheng I previously discussed in my Ruyi comments) most Qing emperors after him did not name Crown Princes while alive. The fact that he declared the boy his successor that early shows the immense hopes he had for him and the trust he had in the Empress. -The lock pendant the Empress had (jia suo/suo pian) is traditionally given to young boys to 'lock' them into the family and the earth, and prevent an early death. They also carried good luck and success, and often had characters engraved on them. (This is similar to the Roman tradition of giving boys a bulla, a similar type of pendant). Sadly, it appears not to have worked for Yonglian. -Yingluo, in the process of acting dumb to fool Gao, asks for a bowl of lotus-root powder balls (a sweet dessert), and ends up having to eat a whole tray of them for Gao's amusement. She does this (faking happiness even though her stomach hurts) to fool Jia, who is definitely smarter than she lets on! (Perhaps she has a little of Ruyi!Jia in her.) Afterwards, she saves one to force Linglong to eat it, as a warning to 'shut up' in the future, lest she incur the wrath of Yingluo--she even jams one in her mouth when Linglong tries to call for help! (On an unrelated note, lotus-root powder ball is now on my list of things I want to try, next to loquat. Thank you, lovingly-styled drama food, for making me hungry.) -As I mentioned in my last comment, the maids wear different shoes than the mistresses. These are called 'sycee' shoes, after small ingots called sycees that were used as currency. Apparently, while horse hoof shoes are more common in Qing dramas, sycee shoes were also used--there doesn't seem to be a consensus on whether or not it's an era thing or just servants wearing one thing while mistresses wear another. In any case, the dominant footwear in this drama are the sycees--even the mistresses wear them, which I just now noticed on a rewatch.

it's partly on purpose, given that Empress Rongyin was very frugal and modest (like Empress Langhua in Ruyi), so the dress-colors are understated with subtle embroidery and the hair ornaments are primarily silk flowers. Gao is the odd one out, of course! You'll always notice her in a crowd ;) This does change a bit as the plot continues and we get the Step Empress running the show, but I greatly appreciate that some of the bigger characters stick to their "assigned" colors and wear the same dresses for many scenes. Chun for example, wears pink now & and pink later, but the color becomes more bright or they filter it less lol. A lot of the shots feel like they've muted the colors a little.

Ugh, Fuheng is such a Gary Stu just for fans to drool after him.... I honestly think Yingluo and Qianlong have an amazing chemistry in this series.
@its99pm7 ай бұрын
In the beginning of the show I didn't like either love interest for Yingluo; Fuheng is too stoic and fell for her too quick to make me believe in it (as Drama Recaps also said), and the Emperor was so stuck up (which is 100% realistic for an emperor to be, just off-putting) and utterly convinced for the longest time that she was a schemer who desperately wanted to seduce him in order to raise her status. Both men had an arrogance to them, and that's one of my biggest turn-offs. Thankfully that attitude doesn't last, but especially with the emperor it sure lasted long enough to be grating. Once choices have been made, though, I definitely ship Yingluo with the Emperor. She's good for him, and he's probably the only man in the world that has the power to _somewhat_ rein her in. I ship Fuheng with that tragic personal servant of his who genuinely cared for him, and cheer for his bromance with the other guard whose name escapes me atm. I really didn't like how Fuheng centered his life around Yingluo despite giving her up & her then marrying another man. It's a bit wanting to have his cake and eat it, too? and ofc it caused SO many problems! I get that drama shows really like toting the 'one and only' kind of love, but I would have preferred the more realistic scenario of Fuheng eventually moving on and finding happiness with someone else, and THEN continuing to support Yingluo from a non-romantic perspective. But they wouldn't have a 'rival' love interest to repeatedly trigger mini plots of jealousy and misunderstandings if that happened, I guess. I just wanted him to be happy, damnit :/ Why are the Fucha siblings both so doomed! Neither of them deserved what they got in life.
@flowermagnolia45517 ай бұрын
@@its99pm Right?! I think she had way more chemistry with the emperor, my only problem with him is that he was way to controlling and at times, It could border on abusive as we see in later episodes. I love how dual natured everyone is in this show. It’s hard to find someone 100% evil and it’s realistic in how complicated human nature is. Any woman would be upset that their child’s father wasn’t that upset at his death. My heart aches for her because if she won’t remember her son then who will? Yet, the emperor as his job can’t let his personal woes impact the life of all his citizens. I also nominate Yinglou as my spirit animal. I have taken so many tips and tricks from her in my real life. I have played dumb/ignorance so many times to get out of things and play the game to my benefit. When in doubt I’m like “what would Yinglou do” 😂 Another way to explain how determined and almost inhuman Yinglou is that revenge can cause someone to be obsessed. I argue- would Yinglou’s sister want this for her? This is a huge flaw in her character that she is reckless in the pursuit of her obsession for the truth and answers. Overall, I love how this show balances the sadness with the absurd because with Ruyi that made me depressed yo

don't know how I missed the first recap. While I agree Yingluo comes off as to Mary Sue perfect, and the FuHeng scene is ridiculous, it was those tropes that made me watch this series over and over. Thank you for introducing me to Ruyi (and helping me to get it straight with your recaps) and Zhen Huan. I am really interested to see how you compare how characters are portrayed and changed.

I personally think YingLuo is more of a feminine-coded power fantasy rather than a Mary Sue. If she was a Mary Sue, everyone would love her, her temper wouldn't get her into trouble multiple times later on, and she would have just sailed through everything with ease.
@dahliahawthorne41517 ай бұрын
Yeah Yingluo is a power fantasy, not a Mary Sue. She has to be crafty and her schemes are quite believable for her level (and even then, she gets into trouble and absolutely shitty situations), and the while she's the main character of the show, the other characters don't just revolve around her or immediately like her.

What time do you upload the episodes?
@dusksunsetio60427 ай бұрын
In my area it uploaded at 3:20 which in Beijing could be 8:20 AM. You could try using a website to convert the time to your time zone
