The third band on a resistor is (usually) the multiplier, not the tolerance. They wouldn`t have got it anyway, but still.

Yes, but later they seemed to count the bands as kinds: digits, multiplier and tolerance. So the question is probably missing a word, like "what is the third [kind] of band on a resistor"? That would work for even higher-precision resistors with say 5 bands.

Good points, except I do like the Birmingham team as well. Sutherland is knowledgeable, albeit possibly in ways deeper than those rewarded by the quiz format. Funny when Dale's 'Charles' turned into 'George' at the end and it just didn't matter at that point. Edinburgh clearly had a good time.
