I have used JB-Weld on the cracks of those plastic body parts, with good results. The JB-Weld holds so good, the repaired crack is stronger than the rest of the plastic.

Great haul! Those JD hoods are two piece. I have a 1998 LT166 ($3,200 new) that's still going strong. They were only sold at JD dealers. I replaced the hood and bumper for $400 a while back. The LX hood is $475 on ebay.
@johnphillips43422 жыл бұрын
I had a LX 176 model purchased in 1990 from a local JD dealer. It is still in service up at my neighbors cabin. I now use a 2000 LX 277 which runs great but is on its second hood, which cracked after 1 year of service. The after market plastic is less durable than the OEM, but the plastic body parts on the JD lawn tractors starts to breakdown after about 10 years. It is ashame because the mechanics are great but the plastic parts are not up to JD performance standards.

Nice haul. It never ceases to surprise me how people will let stuff go for such a small price just because (as they said) "it just doesn't work anymore". Haha And since people don't want to try and fix anything themselves (just go buy another one) anymore, maybe I should start going to yard sales and do small engine repair. Haha

Just picked me up 2 MTD Garden Tractors and a John Deer riding mower with the Kawasaki engine in it (PLUS all of the plastics are in good shape, including the hood), got all 3 for $300......plus a free 20hp B&S Opposing Twin Cylinder engine that runs. The owner just wanted everything gone. He had two more tractors, but my trailer couldn't hold any more..LOL

I got a Troy Built Pony free 17.5 HP 42" cut, guy was pissed off every time he put it in gear with deck running it shut down, took it home and disconected a safty switch and been mowing my 3 ackers of land for a year now, the pto cable broke and got a new one off eBay for $19, so in short got me a nice riding mower for $19, a friend of mine offered me $300 and I told him hell no, lol., some times you can find a gold mine, and some times a turd, As well as I was given a 12.5 hp snapper been sitting in his shed for 10 years and replaced my blown up 9hp snapper, it only needed a starter that I had in my mower stock pile and it as well works like a new one, got to love it!

not sure why but all those John Deere's have trashed hoods. I do a bunch of gather/repair/resale also but like you said, looks is what sells them and a trashed or missing hood just don't sell plus a replacement is so expensive it kills any profit so I stay away from Deere. There's always a ton of them for sale for anyone looking for one.

I have replaced the fuel pump, carb, spindles, hood, coil, on my LT155 in last 17 yrs. It smoked because too much oil. Too much oil because ethanol put a hole in my fuel pump diaphragm and filled the crankcase with gas. Replaced carb because ethanol. I put Star-Brite in my gas now- stuff is great. I use premium gas in all my power equip- helps tremendously. Coil because mounted to cylinder, heat killed it. Hood because open and close so much for battery charge because factory defect ,voltage regulator was not grounded properly and charge system failed. Blade spindles because couldn't get to grease fittings- improperly installed at factory. Painted under and top of deck rust resistant paint because they rot away if you don't. LT 155 sold at JD dealers just before Home Depot Chinese junk.

I can never understand why people throw perfectly good machines in the garbage or sell them for next to nothing. All I can think is they always had money and never had to learn how to make repairs. The landfills and scarp yards are probably filled with millions of mowers that need a new diaphragm and nothing more.... oops, I didn't see that she was smoking a bit.
@nodmallonee15367 жыл бұрын
Figure it out, you can't get anything repaired for less than a hundred dollars and then you don't know how long it's going to be before something else break's down
@MacGyver-17 жыл бұрын
nod mallonee that's true for someone that is at the mercy of the mechanic. I fix stuff for people and always question them on how much they are willing to put into it and how long they expect to get out of it. If the motor is strong with no internal damaged from abuse then, new belts, check all idler's, new bearings in deck spindles. Check the hydro. New/ sharpened blades and as long as the deck is not rusted out these mowers should be able to get 1500 hours easy. That is alot off mowing for a home owner.
@MacGyver-17 жыл бұрын
nod mallonee in most cases people get rid of a good quality used mower that needs repair for a shiny new big box mower that can't make it to 500 hours.
