YardMaster Shed Assembly and make it HIGHER

This is the preparation and install of the Yardmaster 13x10 shed and how I modified it to give more head height.

Great video..I am 71 and decided to buy this shed.I know there are a lot of negative comments about it but I have worked in tools all my life so looked at it as a kit of parts I could build a shed with..No problems so far till I saw your very informative video.I binned my old shed with 4 trips to the tip and then laid a base of worktop pallets 3 mtrs long I think..Two did the job but I had 3 so plenty of packing wood spare.Now as its vertualy the same size of the shed base I should not have problems with under water ingress..Then I realised your problem with height but as I am only 5,7 and my wife is 5ft in her shoes so it should not be such a big problem..So I have laid the base pallets and levelled them and now realise we would have to step up into the shed so hopefully miss our heads as we step up through the door....Now to finish the build and decide wether to raise up 4inches by lieing fence posts down under the walls...Nice work stay safe Ian.

I almost did the same but I used blocks under the door so there is a step up and down, but if it wasn't for this I wouldn't have even started as there just to low. So thank you so much :).. I also fitted rivets where the panels join.

I've really enjoyed watching your video and picked up loads of hints and tips along the way. I'm looking for a metal shed because some kind person set my workshop afire one morning last year at 3am... Lost all my machinery, tools, lathe, pillar drill and loads of other gear I've collected over the last 45 plus years. Approximately 9 grand +. Wasn't insured because it was a separate building to our house and attached outbuildings! Lost my new boundary wall & brick paving which wasn't in with the £9,000!!! The firemen told me that they had been to four other fire's in the general area. I'm disabled and housebound so replacing the workshop, machinery, tools is virtually impossible but I'm going to give it a good go. Your video is going to be really helpful. I'm hoping to get the 8x10 version with double doors. The only problem is that it won't have any skylights or windows but a couple of strip lights will sort that out. How's your shed coping after the first couple of years of weathering and general ware and tear? The add additional height and extending the door is an amazing idea. BIG THUMBS UP ALL DAY LONG MATE. Great video. I happened to have bought the same shed. On the doors it says to use #9 bolts and nuts which will avoid the sharp edges and for the smaller screws you have these little black rubber/plastic caps you can screw on.

Well presented video :) Previously I raised one by 400 mm (2 blocks) but took the easy way out as it was just for storage (no mowers etc) abd had a threshold to step over. My present metal shed I moved the sliding door "outside" so as to have the wall space for screws/bolts storage racks. It is only 6x4 so space important. Well done again

That's what I'm going to do going to put 1 up next summer to use as a gym 10 x 15ft on top of 2 cours of blocks and just step over the blocks such a shame they make them so short

I've just bought the same one,the video on KZbin says to assemble the roof first which I've done but now I've got to get my wife and 4 kids to lift the bloody thing on, absolute nightmare lol

The roof frame is assembled onto the roof, but the roof plates and ridge are put on after. well that`s the way I done it. Hope it worked out for you anyway Thanks

In between 2000 and 2003 sheds were made without floor and their base were ordinary grass. Certainly now sheds are more suitable. Thanks for the view nowadays.

I did the same as it was too short for me to use never mind the door .so I built a square box and raised it up . But now it like a sive with all the water coming in from the roof .

Thank you for this superb tutorial, your excellent detail and calm, patient demeanour got you through a natural disaster and irritating manufacturing misalignments. These sheds are ludicrously low for their capacity and your very well considered upgrade to extend the height was a sensible answer to that problem. In identifying and overcoming these design and manufacturing deficiencies you have hugely increased the knowledge base of DIY shed owners and enabled them to improve their shed considerably.

Not true. Makes no difference unless your garden is flooded, but it would still come through the doors anyway… he did it for height reasons

I enjoyed watching this video and was impressed by your attention to detail and the adaptions to enhance the head height. Sadly I have watched 'cowboy/Mickey Mouse' builders' erect exactly the same shed in my next door neighbour's garden over the past few weeks (they've had probs with the weather) and they've made a complete eyesore of a construction. It is so out of square with a crappy base to sit upon. I will now have to observe this for evermore from our upper windows. Fortunately our garden has high foliage so we don't have to suffer from ground level. Well done you.

Thanks, but the 1.2 metre door opening may be less water tight, but I`ve not found too much of a problem as the base slabs are surrounded by lower level lawn.

Great video, thanks for going into detail. Im looking to get 2 x yardmaster 10ft x 17ft sheds and have them side by side. I have a large grass area that needs to be prepared as I will be storing 2 cars and motorbike/ride on mower so need it to be solid. How has it been in the wind and did you cement the breeze blocks to the slabs or how did you secure them? Thanks

Thanks for your comment. Yes the breeze blocks were cemented onto the slabs and with the four corners and two midway points the blocks were laid flat and the shed screwed into the blocks in each corner using the Yardmaster fixing and I also bolted it down in the two midway points. Absolutely no problem in the strong wind that we had around here. Good Luck.

Thanks for your comment, could be a good idea to rivet the panels I never thought of that option, you`ll need a great many rivets. Sorry I didn`t show the inside of the doors, but they still run smoothly perhaps I`ll add it to a future video.

Thanks Gary, No problems with rain under doorway as the patio stone base protrudes only 15cm all round the shed so the rain don`t have chance to build up, and the threshold strip will also stop too much getting in.

They have a yardmaster YT channel now so that's something to go by too. I might make a video of my process when i get started, probably be a comic tragedy though :)

Yes, I bolted a sheet of stainless steel to the bottom of each door and attached 15mm box section aluminium to strengthen the area where they come together. I also added the same size box section along the bottom of each door to glide within the threshold channels. The threshold strip is from the original pack but ground off of the fixing plate and screwed into the floor. Thanks

Thank you Koysii, I`ve had no problems with water ingress around the blocks. The base is slightly higher than the surrounding lawn so it will not `flood` onto the base slabs.

How are these sheds with the wind? I hear thay can be abit rattlely. Do you get water build up on the concrete block or doese the shed provide enough overhang to stop that fom happening?

I`ve had no trouble with the high winds we get around here. but don`t leave the roof off for any period of time when you assemble it.(as you can see in the video). There is no rattling of the panels as they are well screwed down. The base slabs have a slight incline from front to rear, which takes any water off to the ground at the back of the shed.

I`ve not had any water getting into the shed, there is only a small border of patio stones beyond the shed base so I don`t get any build up of rain water around the base.

It gets very windy around here, as you can tell from the problems I had when it was part built, but now that it is complete the side panels and the whole shed is sturdy and not noisy at all.

Thanks Barry, I`ve been using the shed for a couple of years now and have not had any condensation problems. It is fairly well aired at the junction of roof/walls so perhaps that helps. I`m sure it will go well. Thanks again

Great video. You have great patience. Your base must have come near the purchase price of the shed. Did you seal the apex of the roof? The shallow angle would make me beleive that wind could blow rain in there. Also, are you getting much condensation? I am in the middle of building the bigger yardmaster 10ft x 17ft which doesnt require the extra height but as I'm going to store a lot of stuff in it I dont want the possibility of damp ingress. I will also put electric ( and maybe water!) as I would like a small work area in it.

Thanks Trevor, Base was simply a jumbo bag of sand, few bags of cement and about 20 additional patio slabs to add to the ones from the original shed. I didn`t seal the roof apex and have not found any ingress of rain anywhere around the shed, but I`m not storing sensitive stuff in it. I`m surprised that you have the headroom that you need. I wanted to put some 2 mtre high shelving in mine (and walk around) and now I`m very happy with it. 👍

In shed description it says assembly 4-6 hours estimated so going by your video it takes a lot longer than that then? (even without the problems & making it higher) Great video by the way.

It possibly can be done in 4-6 hours, if your base is prepared and you are happy where each piece needs to be assembled. I spent some time checking the pieces with the instructions. Thanks

The ground preparation took a couple of days and the assembly another couple of days, but it could be done in a day. I had help lifting the unit onto the blocks and the roof assembly, but most of it I done alone. Don`t leave it with the roof off for too long as it can get caught in the wind. I would recommend that you check your shed dimensions before starting the prep work, as I`d hate to give you my dimensions and then you find your shed will not fit onto the blocks. Perhaps build the bottom run and chalk the base in situ as I did in the video. but for MY shed the outside block sizes are 287cm(w) x 389cm (l). don`t forget to leave 120cm for door. Good luck.

Just wondered if you sealed the shed once you plonked it on top of the block to stop water running in. I'm half tempted to muck it on or just use trusty old silicone.

@@Ryan-kg2fv I didn`t seal the shed with anything, just bolted it down into the blocks in six places. Shouldn`t get much water ingress as the roof sends most water off to the sides. but a seal could be a good idea. good luck

I think the shed height is to conform to Planning Permission - above 2.5 metres you need to apply for Planning Permission.

Floor to top apex of the shed is 2.22m with the shed on the blocks, so you can see how short these sheds are without giving it more height. I think the planning regs are 2.5m to the eaves and 3m to apex.

These sheds tend to be only 1.89m high! So raising on blocks is a good idea.

The standard height from threshold strip to top of door opening is approximately 61" (5ft 1"). mounting it on blocks has given me an opening height of approximately 70" (5ft 10")

From my point view it would advisable to info first in instructions where to start assembly from, meaning 1 - floor, 2 walls, etc.

That has to leak at the join om top of blocks. Plus, one skin of block around the base has to carry damp . Blocks soak up water. It's why we put in cavity in houses. And you used aerate blocks. Even worse for soaking up water. Good job on raising it however I know it'll definitely be damp at the base or worse, let water iron top of them blocks.
