Thanks for this video! One hint for keeping your shoulder from hurting is to clamp it on the other side of the corner so the handle is parallel to you so your arm goes forward and back, not in front of you.

I've been cutting slits into a tp roll (no tp on it lol), folding them to make an end... Putting the roll into the winder, winding my yarn. Then following your tips. The cake slides onto the roll, I do the same to the 2nd end and tuck in my yarn end. It works pretty great.

Thanks so much for the tips. I have the same winder and was going to return it because the yarn kept falling off the ends and I ended up with a tangled mess. I set it up the way you showed and it worked great! Working from behind the unit made all the difference. I also tied a knot in the center pull tail so that it wouldn't slip out of the slot while winding.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I actually saw an almost identical yarn winder in a store on Tuesday and thought about buying it since I have some skeins of yarn that are in a mess and I didn't want to wind them by hand. But, I already had too much in my shopping cart! :) I also remembered that I thought I had seen one at a local thrift store. Went to that thrift store yesterday and there it was! No clamp, no instructions, looked very old but very cheap! I have some clamps for other things that worked with this. The first time, I didn't hold it tight enough so it was messy, huge and I wasn't even halfway through! So, I unraveled it and started again and it is great!!! Thank you again for this video, great tips and tricks!

@marjielouscreations
@marjielouscreations Жыл бұрын
That seems like it might be a tension issue, are you holding the yarn (like I do in my left hand) you can apply more tension by holding it tighter, but not too tight because then it may break the gears on the inside. Personally I don't pull from the center anymore because I find I have to rewind it because they fall apart after using them for a little while.

Thanks I'll try that. I did just get a new winder so I might not be using this one much. New video should be uploaded soon.

Would you share with us more about your yarn ring? I’ve been crocheting for years and hadn’t heard of such a thing before. That sent me on an internet search . . . Yours looks more like a simple ring with a groove in it, but I couldn’t quite tell. Where did you get yours? And thank you for the tutorial. It was very helpful.

Hi Tall Em, I personally make the yarn rings. I've been making them for years, and I'm just back from a months vacation and just reopened up my Etsy shop. You can get one from the link below. I made it at first because I had been making a wedding dress and at some point my speed doubled and caused a bad burn on my finger, I was sick of wearing Band-Aids when I crochet, this is what came to mind. I'm at the point where I can't knit or crochet without one. It also helps with tension. www.etsy.com/ca/listing/566462777/new-colours-yarn-guide-ring-tension-ring

I still have and use this one from 5.5 years ago. I do prefer my electric one, but this one does make bigger cakes which is more useful for some projects.

Since you place your ball on a "yarn holder" or a lazy kate, it won't matter but if you take the yarn from the centre, there is a right and a wrong direction to wind the ball! Did you know that?
@marjielouscreations

I did not know that. I have not had an issue with pulling it from the center.

Yah way to much tension on your yarn and holding the yarn down to far.try holding yarn upwards and just let it flow through your fingers. It's working way to hard . I have one just like it. Nice video. I find the drawback to this particular winder is if the cake gets big, it starts dragging.
@marjielouscreations

holding it tighter gives it a firm cake when its done winding. I don't like the loose cakes that fall apart when i take it on the go

My first one broke too! I took it back to the store and they straight up swapped in for me, and said if it broke within a few months they'd refund it. That was 4 years ago and this one is still going. I do tend to use my electric one more though.
