Yarn Winders: To Wind or Not to Wind

In this video I show two different Yarn Winders and talk about the pros and cons of each. I show both my Stanwood yarn winder and my Yarnology Winder from Hobby Lobby.

Bought a knit picks from amazon this week. I LOVE it. I’ve caked all my skeins so they sit nicely on my shelf. This only cost $20 and well worth it

Hi Summer. Thanks for the yarn winder comparison video. Like you said, if you just want to wind small lengths of left-over yarn, then the small winder is fine. Larger amounts are more easily wound on the Stanwood. I just got my large Stanwood in the mail last night.... I read review after review before deciding on the heavy-duty Stanwood. I can't wait to unpack it and start winding! My cat better make herself scarce or I might try to wind up all her fur off her body (that she's just going to shed anyway!) ☺️ Thanks for the great review!

I don't know about everyone else but you were coming in loud and clear when you showed us the second winder and said it was loud. I barely heard it. I don't know if it's my tablet, but I had to turn down the volume. Now I do appreciated how you show and explain each item. I have also been toying with the idea of saving up for one. My budget is quite small and I have been blessed with good friends donating yarn💗. Love your channel!

Thank you for the review of yarn winders. I never understood why someone would want one. I now get it! It is to be used with hanks of yarn. I can not do that. I have skin and breathing problems with animal fibers. I have to use plant and/or man made. Thus, why I never understood the need for a yarn winder. I bought the hobby lobby version for less than $20. I’ve done 1/2 skein of jumbo red heart skein cakes and also full skein cakes of I love this yarn. I just turned slower and no sloppy cakes. What doesn’t work for 1 May work for another, so I get that it’s not for you, but I do think those tiny skein cakes are a bit of an exaggeration. What I don’t like about the yarnology is it’s unstable. It’s very shaky and doesn’t attach well to a table without sliding and pooping off.

I know this video is older. I wish I'd found it when I was looking to see what winders seemed to work best. Everyone was comparing the little ones and said they loved them and had no problems caking a whole skein. So I bought a Knit Picks winder. I am not happy with it. Only certain yarns wind up well. The yarn is always slipping. The handle feels wobbly and doesn't turn smoothly. Your Stanwood seems to work so much better at keeping the strand of yarn in place better for winding a neater and larger cake. Maybe I'll treat myself to one for my next birthday. Thank you for showing an honest comparison.

Thanks for watching my old videos! I still have that little one from Hobby Lobby and never use it. The Standwood winder is amazing. It is well crafted and I still to this day have no problem with it. I did buy the KnitPick's Swift to go with it, for the hanks. I like my swift as well. I think you have to just have to use what works for you. Not everyone is is the same, so it's nice to have products that are different, for everyone! Blessings

I can due up 6.5 ounces of yarn on it the little one. The same one is sold under loops and threads brand at michaels. The cakes look a little messy till you get about half way through. I found going counter clock wise and holding the yarn perpendicular to the winder works best.

Nice to know that. I have a little one but not like yours and it's ok for me. The only I question is why is too big leave much space in the center for a small quantity of yarn? Less space, you can get more big yarn. That center space in the yarn, make a little mess of thread inside or too loose. What kind of winder you recommend for Super Saver Jumbo of 744 yards? Thanks.

When using your yarn winders, it might help to if you use a left over toilet paper center tube or paper towel center tube to remove your finished yarn cake from your yarn winder.

I don't know what happened with mine rewinder, but the yarn is roll only in one direction. The result is not the same, I don't have a cake ball, the yarn is concentrated in center. What is the problem ?

I just bought a winder. It is a Standwood look alike. The Veliis Ball winder (Blue) There is no way to show a picture. got it on Ebay for 46.76 free shipping. I'm not that happy with it. It makes this cracking noise when I wind fast. I'm stuck with it. By the time I send it back and hope for a better one, this will take too long. I will just keep it. I have wound up my yard for now and will buy a Standwood later. Plus I can not get the bobin head off now. I put in on and took it off. Put it back on again and now it wont't come off. Too many issues. Do not recommend. This is what happens when you rush and buy something cause it cost less.

Wouldn’t it be better to buy the swift if we buy the hanks? Of yarn. I think it would be better to buy a swift for the hanks. But the stanwood is probably cheaper than the swift. Thanks for. The review.

if you are not a person who buys hanks of yarn then correct you don't need a swift! The yarn winder is nice for caking partical skeins. The cakes are flat on the top adn bottom, so they are nice for stacking on the shelf!
