True story: A friend organized a chess match in Prague between Polgar and Shirov in the summer of 1999, with major corporate sponsors. My friend usually organized rock concerts, but he was also a chess fan, so he was expanding his activities. It was a huge media event, and I had VIP tickets each day thanks to my friend. Both Kasparov and Yasser were there, both usually hanging out in the VIP room commenting (the actor Woody Harrelson also showed up on one day, as well, probably filming in the country at the time). Yasser was a complete gentleman, he had time for everyone, just the nicest person in the room. Kasparov was a classic VIP snob, who had time for nobody unless you were also a celebrity or a CEO or a famous actor. He never even looked at me, much less bothered to talk to me, the complete opposite of Yasser. I didn't even know Yasser before that event, but became his biggest fan afterwards. I bought his books, etc. I always rooted against Kasparov from that time, as well.
@Greenlion7817 жыл бұрын
At risk of being some kind of armchair psychologist, Kasparov never had any chance to avoid being a total dick. Children cannot separate their moral sense of self-worth from skill-specific aptitude, and he was pumped full of praise from a young age. He won the world championship at an age when most men have to have already learned how to deal with huge setbacks and stay persistent to win success. He never had any meaningful relationship with his father, that could've at least taught him how to conduct himself, and his mother until very deep into his middle age coddled him everywhere.

Many great players were fiercely competitive, chess was more like war to them than a sporting game. E.g. the great Alekhine once resigned a tournament game by throwing his King clear across the tournament hall. The great Nimzovich once climbed up on top of his tournament table and shouted "Why must I lose to this idiot??" The great Akiba Rubinstein once refused a draw offer by tournament opponent Wolf, a master, and then played on to a dead draw eighty moves later. when asked about it, Akiva exclaimed "With Wolf, I draw when I want to, not when HE wants to!" On the other hand many great players were also complete gentlemen of the old fashioned british style of sportsmanship ethic: e.g. Sir G. A. Thomas stunned Edward Lasker after being checkmated in the famous "King Walk" tournament game by profusely congratulating and complimenting the victor on such a beautiful combination. and of course there was Boris Spassky who defied the Soviet Chess Empire by his integrity and unshakable sense of fair play after the Fischer default of Game two in the 1972 "Match of the Century" and he payed a dear price for it, but history has and will be forever kind to him. There is an old saying: "The faults of our brothers we write upon the sands; their virtues in the tablets of love and memory". Don't forget that good sportsmanship and gracious manners will provide eternal rewards that will find their way to you in many different ways. it is Karma.

As a referee in chess tournaments I had wide discretion on how to deal with unsportsman-like conducts. Disturbing the actual positions of or knocking over the pieces, however, (I do not know if it occurred in this game) would result in an automatic forfeiture. Disturbing other players is also considered an act worthy of forfeiture and possibly expulsion from the tournament. Apparently the referee did not intervene, and I am puzzled as to why not since it seems to have been merited.

0:28 The idea here is that the anonymous player started the game with Vienna Mengarini opening, which is a2-Nc3-e4, trying to weaken your queen side in the long run by pushing b4 and c4, the Skull Variation. Answer with d6-e5-c5, for an agressive queen side.
@curiousityfreak17837 жыл бұрын
3:56 after 1) Na7 you ve got to calculate everything carefully, since Ra8 traps your knight. It appears, that after 2) Nc8! - Nc8 3) Bb7 - Nb6 white dont have to give up two pieces for the rook, but after 4) Rc6! They will take it back and remain two pawns up. This is my personal analysis, I could miss something, if so, let me know.
@jampubharadwaj93742 жыл бұрын
So, that's why Ra8 is bad after Nxa7, however, since the youtube commentator can't cover all the lines within the time limit, sometimes, we work on them ourselves. The one who analyzes positions that were never spoken about understands more than those who just see and learn from what is shown. In that regard, you are on the right track.

Seeing Kasparov's normal behavior over the board, I wouldn;t consider it unsportmans like. I mean, I doubt the point was to rattle Yasser but I guess its possible. More likely he was thinking he had made an idiotic decision until Yasser messed up and he just got really excited. Though, he did love crushing people, so the more I think about it it becomes a bit more likely it was a way of saying "I'm crushing you now, boy!"

Pain is often the best way to learn (thats why from animals to humans, we can feel pain .. turned out as an evolutionary strategy for effective learning)
I went to high school with Grandmaster Yaz ...! He was, of course, our board one, but he only played when we needed him because our board two was pretty good, so he took care of everybody else until something like the all-city or all-state tournaments came up, and, of course, the nationals. I ran into Yaz after I got out of the Navy in 1999 or so. Amazon was sponsoring a contest, where the person that beat Yaz would get a $200 gift card to Amazon.com. I was about 1900 at that time, so I watched a few games before paying the two bucks or whatever it was to enter the contest. At that time, Yaz was the fifth best player in the world, and I didn't think the other four were going to be showing up that day, so there was no way anybody was going to beat him to win that gift card. We chatted a bit while he dispatched a few 1200 players within the first ten moves or so (it was really sad!), and finally it was my turn to play. The outcome, of course, was predictable -- he won! But he had to work to do it, unlike with the other guys that just gave away material for no reason. It was a good day.

Sounds like Kasparov. No wonder Yasser was rooting against him during his match vs Karpov in NYC I think it was. Read about that in Mortal Games. Great read.

Garry traded down immediately owed to his pissing fear of the Yass.

Hi, do you know of any instance when Kasparov took off his watch (as he'd usually do in order to exert psychological pressure on the opponent by showing that he's in control and that it's only a matter of time until he wins the game) only to get proven wrong and lose the game in the end? If so, could you please cover such a game?

Haha, it’s funny you approach the chocolates like a chess game. I can relate to yassa, I used to play this guy at work and always lose, them I played him on holiday and he couldn’t win even once.

The picture of garry was pretty weird if you observe in this angle, his nose is strait and perfect if you observe when he was maybe 50 or 60 his nose is kinda slightly "weird".

He should have slammed the clock right back in an unexpected moment. That’s the only way to profitably deal with such a situation... you relieve your own tension by showing your opponent you’re just as crazy as he is, and frighten him at the same time.
