A fit tribute to a great film director and true humanist.

This might be the only place we can find footage of Ozu working behind the scenes and one of the only instances of him being filmed. For me that feels revolutionary

The elderly man peeling the apple is in my opinion the greatest image in film. Nothing I have seen surpasses it.

In just over 1 year from now this documentary, commemorating Ozu's death 30 years prior, will itself be 30 years old.

I have watched Tokyo Story only about 50 times. And Early Summer only about 15. But may love them equally, now I think about it.

He was born in 1903/12/12 and passed in 1963/12/12 the day he tuned 60's old. How come these numbers can coincide so blatantly in such a mystic way like this? What kind of synchronicity or message is that??

Beautiful documentary! Just a note: not the whole world can understand the english so easly, so make subtitles for english directors could be a better choice

Thank you for your message. It's not perfect, but if you click on the "Settings" button at the bottom right, then click on "Subtitles/CC" and select "English (auto-generated)" you will see KZbin's automated English subtitles. Of course, this will only work for the English-language sections; for the other languages spoken, you would need to select the proper English subtitles.

I'm not sure Ozu would've appreciated the direction of this film, too many pans and zooms and superfluous establishing shots

I don’t think he would have expected everyone to be like him.

@@helloalanframe I agree, and he clearly appreciated films that were very different from his own. He never intended to form a school or rigid style of "proper" filmmaking, except perhaps for his own directorial efforts.
