2:03 I think also need to stress out that even the appearance of Yasuke and William Adams were only about 20 years apart, it was already different era and the "need" for combative ability already dramatically decreased.

That is why always always ask for primary sources when asking for evidence. Dont ask for translated or "interpreted" paper.

In the little over a year that Yasuke was with Nobunaga, what “battles” would Nobunaga have personally been present? Nobunaga toured Iga a month after the second Tensho Iga war was over. And he wasn’t at the battle of Tenmokuzan, his son Nobutada lead the troops there. What historical record has Nobunaga…and by association Yasuke physically present in any battlefield action for those few months they would have been together?

None. He was too important to take personal charge of any battles. He was the overall commander, sending his generals out to do battles instead.

@@TantojutsuAn important point that many people making these ridiculous claims overlook. They imagine Yasuke on the battlefield, fighting heroically shoulder to shoulder with Nobunaga…the only problem is by then Nobunaga wasn’t on the battlefield. I wrote the same thing on Mr Cummins latest offering- Yasuke appears in a few dozen words across the total of the historical record. People fill in the rest with whatever motivates them.

Hi. Just curious about the point that he was only given a short sword rather than a long sword. As I understand it, many of the Ahsigaru would not have long swords or even swords, although the higher-ranked ones would have a katana. But the Ashigaru were still considered Bushi, although Bushi of the lowest rank. Would this mean its possible Yasuke was regarded as a lower rank Bushi? It seems to me if he was given a sword at all it would be because he was expected to act in some capacity as a warrior, even if only as a bodyguard.

Ashigaru were expected to have a katana at the very least. Possible exceptions would be if their main weapon was something like a spear, then maybe they would have a wakizashi. Only a wakizashi is mentioned in the historical records was given to Yasuke, no other weapons. If Yasuke filled the role of a warrior at all, it would be expected that he would have been given a katana.

Ubisoft could've made up a fictional black main character like they had for all their past games - hardly anyone would've liked, but it would be less controversial. But no, this time, they wanted that sweet ESG paycheck - a huge money grant for having characters that represent DEI - and they knew there'd be massive backlash if they stuck a made-up Black and gay character in Japan. So, they reached into history for Yasuke, trying to use his flimsy "samurai" history as a shield against the backlash. Not only is that shield largely not working, it's fueling people to lie about history in order to keep that shield up. It's so... awful. I feel bad for Yasuke in a way too. He was just living his life, but everyone - even now - keeps trying to turn him into a trophy.
