The Yawa' Award is an encased Serrano gourd rattle created by the San Manuel youth. Singing has always played an integral role in the lives of the Serrano people, and unlike other American Indian musicians, traditional Serrano musicians do not use drums for rhythm. Instead, they fashion a guard rattles with palm tree seeds inside to make percussive sounds.
DISCOVERY Children's Museum is honored to be one of four non-profit recipients to receive the inaugural Yawa' Award by The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.
