Saw this when it was released on tv. Frank Langella was excellent! Many great swordsmen in Hollywood but Basil Rathbone is reputed to be the all-time greatest!

Stellar cast here with this Excellent version of this classic film, Loved it! Alas the 1940 version with Tyrone Power, Linda Darnel, Basil Rathbone and Gail Sondergaard is my favorite of all the Zorro films. The chapel scene stole the heart of this old romantic and the dance scene was superb! The entire cast was also stellar with J Edward Bromberg as Quintera and Montagu Love making me laugh out loud with every scene as his father with just a few lines. But the swordfight between Power and Rathbone looked both authentic and intense rivaling any that I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing this Pearl!

Basically, it's a pilot for a tv series that wasn't picked up. A word for word remake of the much better 1940 film with Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone. They even use the opening fanfare and march composed by Hugo Friedhofer adapted for this film by Dominic Frontiere. Alfred Newman wrote most of the music for the original film. Good to see Ricardo Montalban in another swashbuckler. He was in a 1950's film for Universal called Mark of the Renegade based on a story by Johnstone McCulley who created Zorro in 1919.

The plot of this movie tracks exactly the Zorro starring Tyrone Power but cuts some of the detail because of the time limits. If you liked this, check out the other, it's considerably better.

As noted by others, this is an almost (but not exact) line-by-line, scene-by-scene remake of an original with Tyrone Power, Basil Rathbone. Ricardo Montalban plays the evil capitan as well as Basil Rathbone did, but IMO, Tyrone Power was a more convincing Zorro, and Linda Darnell a more convincing Teresa. Also, this version is about 20 minutes shorter than the original, with some of the scenes being shortened, which doesn't allow things to flow quite as well.

One complaint: the title boxes of other videos at the close cover up the credits. At least I was able to make out the names Dominic Frontiere and Alfred Newman. Frontiere was music director of "The Outer Limits" in its first season around 1963, and Newman composed the music for the 1940 movie with Tyrone Power, Basic Rathbone, and Linda Darnell.
