How to Restore Default .dll File Format and Icons Without Programs

Have you ever messed up your .dll files by making them open up in Notepad or Adobe Acrobat or other programs? In this video I have put myself in your position. This tutorial is the one for you to watch and learn from.
The steps I have taken are as follows:
1) Click on the start menu and type in "regedit" for Windows Vista or 7 users, XP users should click on start and then on run and type in "regedit". WITHOUT THE SPEECH MARKS.
Locate .dll folder by doing the following...
2) Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER
3) Then on Software
4) Then on Microsoft
5) Then on Windows
6) Then on CurrentVersion
7) Then on Explorer
8) Then on FileExts
9) Then on .dll
10) Then delete everything under the "Default" key in the OpenWithList folder.
11) Delete the entire UserChoice folder.
12) Either: Restart your computer and finish, or follow the next steps.
13) Close the Registry Editor
14) Holt CTRL and SHIFT and ESC on your keyboard and click on the "Processes Tab" in the Windows Task Manager
15) Find "explorer.exe" and end the process
16) Press on "File" and then "New Task (Run...)"
17) Type in "C:\Windows\explorer.exe" into the search box and press Enter
18) Close Windows Task Manager and you're done!

For us smart asses who thought that opening a .dll file with for example notepad was a good idea and can't remove the reg file under UserChoice , delete the whole "UserChoice" folder and restart your computer, this is of course after you have removed the reg files in the "OpenWithList" Cheers :]

it does work with windows 10, you probably clicked on the wrong file. I am on windows 10 and it worked for me my mistake was the H_LOCALMACHINE one.

What you can do is, instead of navigating to .dll on step 9 (in the description of the video), look for .PuP in the list and open it up. Follow the following steps then tell me if it worked. I hope that helped! :D

Hi there. You did not need to like/sub/favourite if this did not work for you. I will try to help you fix your problem, but I would first like you to check if command prompt opens on your computer. If it does, then please run it as administrator and type in: "assoc.dll=dllfile" without the quotation marks. Then restart your computer and see if it worked, and do let me know if it didn't work so I can try to suggest other things. Thanks.

That might just mean that the exe file in the NFS directory has been relocated. A fix might be straightforward but explaining the process by which you go about attempting to fix it is probably difficult. You might want to reinstall the game; that would definitely fix your issue. If not, then navigate to the NFS folder in C:\Program Files and either replace the missing exe file (by means of a download) or move the relocated file back to the game's original directory, from where it was. Good luck!

Perhaps try going to command prompt (press on start and type cmd, then right click on cmd and run as administrator). Then type in "assoc.idx=idxfile" without the quotation marks. Then press enter. Do the same for .sub and restart your computer. I hope this works!

Well that is strange because when you make a change, the registry editor must update unless the changes aren't actually taking place. Are you using the administrative account? And have you restarted your computer and attempted it again?

Hi, well this problem seems common amongst people trying to prevent notepad opening specific extensions. I understand your eagerness to solve this problem, but at this moment in time, I can only suggest that you do a system restore to a date before the problem happened, and this should hopefully fix your issue. And if I want to open a plugin dll file, for example an instrument downloaded from the vst4you site, can I do the same? Once I had a few plugins on my desktop and they were working. Then they disappeared and now I can not open any downloaded plug. And I need a percussion plug. I do not use a DAW program although I downloaded Reaper. I play on MIDI controller Arturia MiniLab.
