It’s a mandolin. Strings are the same as violin. Just in octaves. Great bluegrass instrument. My sister is a violinist and when she wanted to play mandolin stuff she literally just turned her violin sideways and improvised. Thanks for reacting to the guys!!!

All the guys can play instruments Adam was a Trumpet performance major in college; plays drums, keyboard, bass guitar, and most other band instruments. Chance plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, saxophone, and bit of piano. Attended college on a saxophone scholarship before changing to creative writing and journalism. Austin plays piano and learning the guitar. Rob plays saxophone Tim plays piano (self taught) and some guitar.

Adam is doing a low overtone and Tim is singing an octave lower than Chance. Austin is playing a mandolin. Both Rob and Austin use their opera voices.

Chance played both the mandolin and guitar for the studio recording, but since he couldn't play both for the live, Austin played mandolin at the Ubisoft premiere. Also, overtone singing isn't for singing low, it's a technique used to sing two notes at once -- in this case, the drone sound at the beginning of the song. The technique Adam uses to "drop that bass" (which he isn't using here) is throat bass where he uses the false vocal folds to create a deep tone.

I just saw them perform this live last night and it was just as good, if not better, than this video. The base notes made the floor rumble, the high notes were from Austin, not Rob, and Chance did play guitar but there was no mandolin.

They all can play instruments, (Austin was playing mandolin) if you see some of their individual side projects, some play instruments while singing, and also this was special for Ubisoft and pretty much required instrumentation, but usually in Home Free on their own they just sing because they are considered an acapella group.

Your reaction to the beginning of the live version is priceless!! I like the live version best although I hate it’s so short. If you haven’t gotten your answer, Austin has mandolin. You can really hear “Opera Rob” in the live version. If you haven’t watched Rob and Austin sing Nessum Dorma, you really need to check it out. Wasn’t this just amazing?!

The setting for Skull And Bones game is around early 1700s in and around the Indian Ocean. And it was actually Rob doing the "Skull-And-Bones" chant. I think the cameraman was a bit fixated on Adam and his beatboxing. (😂 Who wouldn't? 😂)

In Home Free's video "Born in the U.S.A." Chance plays guitar throughout. Perhaps oddly for an acapella band, they all do play instruments - most play piano (Austin does so on his original "If I Met You Now" on his channel) and Tim does a few times on his. Rob plays saxophone & Adam plays trumpet, piano & whatever else he chooses!

Its a mandolin.... and Adam is not doing the "Skull & Bones", it's Rob. You can see him say it in the music video also. The camera person just happened to be on Adam at the time. In the studio recordings they often pull back Rob's vocals because he has much more resonance than the rest of them. Also they pulled back Tim's bass on this song so you can actually hear Chance sing the lead. Otherwise he gets drowned out. But I still like the live version better. Thx for the video!

Wasn't that great! We've been waiting for this official video by Home Free for awhile now. It felt like watching a movie. Home free is so talented & they can do any genre of music. Chance loves sea shanties & he wrote this song for the game "Skull & Bones". His deeper voice sounded great for this song. And of course all the background harmonies of the guys including Adam's fabulous vocal percussion. I also like seeing the live version as it shows who is doing what parts. Tim & Chance are doing the really low notes in the beginning. Chance has his guitar & Austin is playing a mandolin. Adam is holding down the percussion sounds. And Austin & Rob are adding a fuller sound with their harmonies. Wish it was the longer version of the song.

What's disappointing is I think we only hear this song (as a shanty sung by your ship's crew) once in the game itself, when your character first leaves St Anne iirc. Need to hear it more ingame.

Yes, Chance plays guitar a little banjo, and the mandolin, but Adam Rupp plays trumpet, drums, bass guitar, and keyboard plus the nomonica, lol. Austin Brown plays bass guitar, piano keyboard, and drums and Adam taught him how to play the nomonica too. Rob Lundquist can play the saxophone and is a master whistler too. The only one in the group who doesn't play an instrument is Tim Faust but with that beautiful 5 octave voice he doesn't need to.
