Sabito was the reason Giyuu is alive. Sabito was speedrunning the Final Selection and solo'ing every demon, but later died from the Hand Demon. He was the reason he is a Hashira. He also said in the manga that he didn't want to become a Hashira and wanted Sabito to become one instead of him.

My favorite part was definitely when Akaza acknowledged Giyuu strength. I heard he did that because when giyu was in a coma after the final battle his haori was damaged and ripped a lot. While he was in a coma nezuko mended it for him and called him out everyday to wake up. And after he did wake up he saw his haori fixed and gave nice kimonos and other gifts as a thank you to the point where zenitsu started considering the giyu was an enemy

you have to kill either an upper or lower moon or 50 demons to gain the hashira title... regardless of how he pasted induction, the achievements he must have completed between that time on the mountain and current day would have to be more then enough to validate his skill. besides, he created an entirely knew form for water breathing.. which both proves his skill and his contribution to demon hunting as a whole. giyuu deserves his place, it's just his survivors guilt that makes him doubt himself.
