I grew up on Unico! They made pretty decent villains. I still remember how both Baron de Ghost from "The Fantastic Adventures" and Lord Kuruku in "Island of Magic" freaked me out. Lol.

Honestly, the blue guy and his dragon form was all I remembered about the movie. I remember asking my mother why Katie went with blue guy in the first place. Mom (no joke) told little kid me (about five) that Katie had been human for all of a week and no one had taught her how to control her hormones yet. 😂

Same for me about the blue guy. I saw something tonight that reminded me of that character and led to an hour of internet searching. “1980s cartoon movie little boy demon with blue fur and horn?” finally got me the answer of Unico.

So Unico is based on a manga that is about Unico going on multiple adventures. He meets Katy and Beezule(?) Like in the movie but he also meets alot of other characters. But! Unlike in the movie in the manga he forgets everyone he meets because of the west wind. And that is how the manga ends Unico being swept away one last time having no memory and needing to start all over again. Wired metaphor for rebirth and innocence maybe?.... Regardless I loves Unico growing up and watching the movies. There is actually a third 30 minute movie(piolet) episode that was meant to be the start of a Unico T.V series but it sadly was never picked up.

Katy deciding to stay with the old lady (presumably till the bitter end) is powerful and touching and shoes her character growth. Maybe this film lacks logic but its heart beats very strong.

I grew up watching Unico and the Island of Magic. Lord Kuruku was the first thing I was ever afraid of. I watched it with my daughter a couple years ago and it is the weirdest movie ever.

Thank you for covering! ♥ This topic is so obscure that your video is basically THE video. This was a favorite movie of our family in the 80s. There has been such limited information about Unico...even in these days of social media. In college I went on a hunt and recall finding forums and all kinds of early internet spaces covering this topic. I had no clue that this movie was a sequel; there were DVDs made with both films. Through those explorations in my college days (my pic is from those days), I was able to learn that the Sanrio company lost the rights to these characters and the company that owned the characters and film rights went belly up, and the Unico and other IP went with it. I have a tattoo of Beezul.... which somehow when I was younger I didn't realize his name was a variation of Beelzebub. I so appreciate you covering this and sharing with the world.

The Barron is such a video game boss. If a Kingdom Hearts esk game was ever made for Osamu Tezuka characters, of which Unico is one, you would so be buzzing around the Barron as both his human form, and then his castle sized version. This movie game me life as a kid! Cute little baby unicorn, to awesome Alicorn super sayain Unico when someone loves him. His abilities are contrived; only able to grant wishes to those that care for him and are his friends/love him. Love gives him strength and makes everyone happy! The whole series was set up to be an adventure of the week manga, of which this film combines 3 of the stories. The kicker is that every time he is moved to protect him from the night wind, and thus the Gods' jealousy, he is forced to forget anyone he just met. His wind savior isn't too powerful, so strong bounds he is able to re-remeber. In the original story, if I remember right, the Barron was killing all the animals (animal sacrifice to a demon!) and after he is killed, the kitty/girl ends up meeting a very handsome male cat/boy (The surviving animals were hiding as people!). Yet if you think this film gets weird and or confusing at times, the second Unico movie is 1 longer story, and centers around a f-up island where everything living is being turned into bricks for the main villain's castle. Worth a watch if you enjoy the Unicorn character, but a trip otherwise.

The Count was likely the god Thanatos (son of Nyx the goddess of the Night Sky), or a Demon Lord, he transforms into a demon with a Stag skull, he's not "a dragon" ,the story lines of the movies make more since if one reads the manga they're based on

It was always so depressing when unico always had to leave whenever he found happiness. Such a cruel fate. I've always thought they should go against the "gods" and end their tyranny. It's nonsense. My heart goes out to unico 😢

Movie has been with me since childhood …(the woofer and the tweeter 😂) but ..like omfg both those movies. 80s kids movies…60% heartwarming …20% life lessons/empathy…20% trauma to teach the first two 😮😅❤

I just double checked. I was pretty sure there was more than one film, and yep! There are 2 of them on Retro Crush (free with ads). This one and Unico in the Island of Magic (1983)! I'm guessing it won't give any answers to your plot hole questions, but it's there if you're interested. Right now, I've got a lengthy watch list that I'm not going to add this just yet. But if I whittle my list down some, I'll keep it in mind.

I do agree about the devil island and beezil being left with Katy. However it is obvious that beezil was just getting a one off trip and he had no one else left on the island anyway. The oblivion place is vague but I think it's meant to be where unico could not affect anyone and also suffer a living death. The devil island was the best alternative west wind could think of. Baron de ghost does name himself in the English dub just once and he seems to want to slowly destroy the flora and fauna around him. He has considerable powers but not when unico is in full flight

I think it tells us that there are bleak things that happen in the world that we can't fix, and Gods are cruel. I'll have to watch the film to get a more definitive opinion. Plus, I feel you on the VHS life.

This actually began as a Japanese film. Later, it was released in English in the US. Now... There is so much lost in translation from Japanese to English. The gods were angry bc if everyone was happy, it rendered them obselete. Power never likes losing its perch. Think of it as Prometheus in Greek mythology. The gods took fire away from man to punish them, and plunge them into darkness. Prometheus stole it back for mankind. However, he was punished to die every day for choosing the better for mankind.

I remember this movie because my second job was at a video rental store and i happen to pick it up and found it to be very very weird keep in mind I was in my early 20s when I saw it then later on I found through KZbin the other two movies in the series and they’re even weirder the last word is probably the weirdest of them all

I loved the unico movies growing up! The second movie is even better/worse. In the second one The idea is nightmarish as is some of the animation but it's also incredible and fun for some reason. There is also a 3rd in Japanese that I recently found out about but didn't get to watch yet.
