i personally really dont like the idea that the knight is being manipulated or doesnt know about the roaring. i feel like it takes away all agency and power from the knight as one of the main antagonists. i kinda like papyrus knight but i HATE this version of it (which is most papyrus knight arguments). the knight is implied to be very strong and intimidating, considering spamton is scared to say something juicy about them, as well as beating up the kings and imprisoning them to put spade king into power, which doesnt really fit with this version of papyrus knight if hes still nice and just wants to be cool. theres also another common papyrus knight argument i hear that i really dislike and its the idea that hes doing it to get friends, which would maybe track, IF the knight actually spent much time in the dark worlds, which they really dont. all in all, i think in order to be narratively satisfying, papyrus knight has to be a good bit more different from undertale papyrus than most papyrus knight arguments want to propose, which is already established as likely considering how much of a shut-in he is in deltarune.

This is a lot of interesting points for Papyrus Knight theory, but I personally disagree on Gaster wanting to cause the Roaring. Based on all the evidence there is it seems more likely to be the opposite. 1. if Gaster getting the player to possess Kris was supposed to stop them from opposing the Roaring, it really hasn't worked in his favour lol. All we've done as the player is close the Dark Fountains, heck when Kris takes out the soul they actively try and create more fountains by themselves. It'd make more sense for Gaster to just let Kris do their thing in that case. 2. i'm fairly confident that Ralsei has some connection to Gaster, just based on the fact that he seems to know about the player. That'd really only make sense if he learned about that in some way from the man responsible for putting the player in Kris. Assuming they're working together, Ralsei is the one who most staunchly opposes the Roaring out of anyone, so it'd make sense to assume Gaster is similar. He might still be the one behind the scenes getting Papyrus to create Dark Fountains, but I doubt causing the Roaring would be his end goal in that case, it'd be more likely that he knows and expects the team to stop it and that'd help in his own purpose somehow.

I totally agree. Since the prophecy is foretold by time and space, I think it’s reasonable to say Gaster MADE the prophecy

It's possible he wants to cause the roaring because that's the only way that the three heroes will banish the angel's heaven. Idk but since we don't really know what that is about it could work.

The only real way to justify Papyrus being the Knight is by saying that he's being manipulated. Sure, he was manipulated in Undertale, but not nearly to the degree someone would have to manipulate him into being "The Roaring Knight." It's just hard to believe. Personally, I find it hard to believe that Toby, a guy who said he's happy that people aren't labelling Deltarune as Undertale 2 anymore, would make a primary Undertale character the main antagonist of this game. If anything, Deltarune seems to be deliberately avoiding giving Undertale characters major roles.
@tobiasbayer48665 ай бұрын
Yeah, thats also the thing putting me of with Papyrus knight. I dont really like any Deltarune theories that put Undertale characters in the spotlight. The only exception is Gaster, but thats only because there is a lot of room for new stuff and he was barely a character in Undertale.
@alt43885 ай бұрын
1. the knight probably won't be the main villain 2. papyrus is a bit of a weird case. firstly he's implied to originate from hometown, so the papyrus in ut and Dr are the same, and papyrus has led a completely different life in this world compared to UT. he's a shut in, he never met undyne, he doesn't know how to cook (as undyne was the only reason he bothered learning). so to an extent, deltarune papyrus will probably be a completely different character.

I think it all depends on framing. Yeah, you probably couldn't trick Papyrus into actively trying to end the world, but you could ABSOLUTELY convince him to play the role of a villain in a story/game. That idea is personally part of my theory, but that's a whole tangent. Also, while Toby did say he's glad Deltarune has its own identity, he still labels the game as something that should be played after Undertale, and has spoken about how Chapter 1's opening light world section was intricately designed to make people think they're playing a new Undertale game, before revealing it's something pretty different once you enter the Dark World.
@UnoriginalJokester5 ай бұрын
@@alt4388 While I acknowledge that Papyrus may be different in Deltarune, he should still be the same person at his core if everyone else is to go by. And even if the Knight won't be the main villain, they should still be treated seriously.

Another clue to papyrus being the knight is one of the Rudins trapped in the prison in chapter 1

This is good. It also is very fitting that, 1. Papyrus wants to be a KNIGHT in the ROYAL guard. A fantasy, like Castle town, card castle, etc. It's SO papyrus. Also about the flowey connection, where/what are the only fountains in undertale? They are associated with Asriel
@PlayerCarter.5 ай бұрын
2 of the 3 aspects you applied to Papyrus is applicable to basically any other Hometown resident. Also when asking Spamton about the Knight they literally say "SPEAKING OF [[COMMUNION]]. KRIS, DID YOU KNOW THAT THE KNIGHT..." and gets cut off and apologizes to someone. Alvin Knight all the way.
@DJSymphonie5 ай бұрын
The more I hear this brought up the more I think Spamton is alluding to the fact that the Knight was moving to the church to open the next fountain there. Our next fountain is in Kris' home but that's because Kris interrupted the Knights order (the chp4 fountain being church based is a pretty common take after rudies allusion to going there the next day too afterall)

9:27 OKAY. I HAVE STRONG OPINIONS ON THIS. RANT INCOMING Frisk was *not* manipulated by Chara, quite the opposite, actually. We manipulated Chara, through Frisk. Time for a Chara chara-cter analysis. Chara is heavily implied to have been abused on the Surface. This, most likely, included manipulation and some form of emotion shaming. Eventually, they couldn't take it anymore and ran up to Mount Ebott, in hopes of killing themself. Instead, they fell into the Underground. This is relevant because it lays the groundwork for how Chara acts. Often, kids pick up on how their parents act and take a few behaviors from it. The abuse also shapes them, making them react differently to some situations and ruins their self-worth and esteem. Then Asriel found them and they had a happy family. The effects of the abuse never left them, but they partially healed. Then the pie situation. Asriel and Chara were young and made a stupid mistake (my headcanon: dyslexia /j). They *both* poisoned Asgore by accident. Asriel, having been raised by caring parents, reacted like most would, and showed extreme emotion. Chara, however, still effected by the abuse, did not. They laughed it off, to cope with the emotional pain. Many characters use laughing to cope. For example, Snowdrake's dad. After talking about Snowdrake leaving and his wife dying he says: *Hah hah hah... *That's not funny. So now its established that laughing is a way to cope with sadness in Undertale, so we can explain Chara's behavior away. Then, the plan. Chara, knowing about the poison of buttercups, came up with an idea. They would kill themself so Asriel can take their soul, kill 6 humans, and free the monsters. Monsters had only been kind to them, so they deserved to be free, and humans had only shown hatred, so they deserved to die. Chara told Asriel the plan. Asriel, being a normal kid, was horrified and didn't want to. Chara was DETERMINED to do it, so they took the behaviors they gained from the Surface and manipulated him into doing it, which worked. It's implied that they manipulated Asriel before that, considering how he says they aren't "the greatest person", and that they are so quick to switch to manipulation there. Either way, they then poisoned themself, got Asriel to absorb their soul, and went to the surface. Everything was going according to plan. Until Asriel realized he couldn't bring himself to kill anyone. The humans still attacked and Chara tried lashing out. They wouldnt let their brother die from their plan going wrong. Asriel, however, was stronger and wouldn't let them do that, and died. Chara died with him...or did they? Chara then wakes up from death, following a small child and narrating them. The child then goes through, killing everyone in their path. Chara started thinking, why were they revived from death just to watch a kid killing everyone, including their mother? There must've been a purpose. Something must be wrong, that requires everyone to die. Chara then realized Flowey was Asriel and saw he was on board too. They decided to help the kid. They told them how many enemies were left, they told them if they missed Snowdrake (and scolded them if they never killed him), and took more action. They moved towards Papyrus and MK before starting the fight. Then, the end game. They were tired of the song and dance of killing everyone, so they took more matter into their own hands. They killed Sans since his battle was taking too long. We know it was Chara because of the slash. Even if you have the ballet shoes, the finishing blow is ALWAYS a knife slash. And what weapon did Chara use? The Real Knife. We don't control the blow, it happens even if we dont hit FIGHT twice. Then we go to Asgore. Asgore takes too long, so Chara kills him too. We have such high LOVE (which rubs off onto Chara since they're attached to our soul) that we have no empathy anymore, and Chara doesn't either. According to Asgore, Flowey betrayed us, and is taking too long, so Chara kills him too. Then, we see them. We have such high LOVE that they are able to live once more, as a corporal being. They still think there was a purpose for the killing. If we agree to erase the world, their belief is confirmed, and it is erased. If we dont, they realize there was no reason. They killed their father and brother for no reason. Instead of showing emotion, they kill us and erase it anyway. In most routes, Chara is fine, doesn't kill anyone, even helps us. In the Asriel fight, Chara gives us their memories. Its almost definitely them because how else would we get the memoties? Asriel physically couldn't. Chara is tied to our soul. Chara wants the best for their family, especially their brother. Chara doesn't do anything else in the other routes but narrate. Also, when we lose in the Asriel fight, it's implied that Chara helps us stay alive, considering they have a hold on our DETERMINATION, though it could just be Frisk being very DETERMINED in that moment. Along with that are the themes of the game. One of them is that nobody is perfect, but everyone has some bit of good in them. Undyne comes off as rude, overly violent, and evil when we first meet her, but when we befriend her we see how kind, loyal, and caring she is. Alphys comes off as inconsiderate and self-important from her lying, but when we befriend her and see the true lab we see how she is so self depreciating and depressed she needs to lie about everything, thinking that nobody would like her if she showed them the real her. Flowey is evil, unempathetic, and violent, but when we discover his past and help him, we see how kind, caring, and empathetic he actually is. Nobody is perfect, they all have their flaws, but are any of them pure evil? No. Why would Chara be any different? Why would Toby *specifically* make Chara the pure evil one? Why would he discard a whole theme just for one character some people don't even know the true name of? And an instance of our actions manipulating them in a way is the dog food bag. In Alphys' lab theres a bag of dog food. In a pacifist route, it'll say: *(It's a bag of dog food.) *(It's half full.) If its a murder heavy neutral, dogs alive, it'll say: *(It's a bag of dog food.) *(It's half empty.) If its a genocide or dogs dead neutral, it'll say: *(It's a bag of dog food.) *(It's half empty.) *(You just remembered something funny.) Your actions change Chara's reaction to things. TL:DR: hah no lol, idk how to summarize this lmao Anyways uh, Chara isn't evil or a villian, just a child in a horrible situation. They aren't perfect though, far from it, but they aren't 100% evil and a genocidal maniac like the fandom thinks they are.

6:15 I personally like to think that Flowey either has or does consider Papyrus to be a friend :) (or at least has good opinions of him) Given Flowey's history, I don't think that friendship started because Flowey had everything planned out and a specific plan to use Papyrus. Sure, the thought of "oh I could totally use this guy later" might've (most certainly) come to mind; but in Pacifist route, Flowey getting Papyrus to call everyone felt more impromptu (well, as impromptu as "planning since the end of the neutral route" or "planning once he's seen that you've befriended everyone" can be). Flowey's an opportunist, he saw the opportunity to take everyone's souls and he took it; using all of the tools at his disposal. Flowey's so jaded and disconnected from his reality, having reset so many times, even if he saw Papyrus in a friendly light, that wouldn't stop Flowey from taking advantage of their pre-astablished friendship to hurt everyone. If Flowey can kill his own parents, he can hurt Papyrus without regret; especially if it means getting control over the timeline again.

And here I wanted to say that Papyrus was the Angel because in Undertale he’s really the only canonically _truly_ innocent character who’s never been corrupted/done bad things. Meanwhile, Undyne would be his Knight since in Undertale we know she cares about him a lot, she kinda literally roars, _and_ she’s the only character besides RG01/02 to wear a full knight outfit. Of course, maybe Papyrus thinks since he’s the “Angel” that his “Heaven” would be whatever he wants, so he could avert the catastrophe by simply wanting something _good,_ like making everyone happy and becoming the “True Hero” of Deltarune.

i'm pretty sure this cut character was grandpa semi, possibly related to papyrus and sans since he uses the same trope of his name being a font (his name is semi, semi serif) in the undertale files you can also find a music file called mus_grandasemi or something, and it plays a small portion of mettaton's theme. my best guess is grandpa semi was intended to be the royal scientist, before being replaced by alphys and mettaton. he'd probably have a role similar to mettaton where he would try to stop the player by making puzzles and contraptions and stuff. eventually, toby fox decided to replace grandpa semi with gaster, and keeping the old plot of him being the royal scientist before something happened and he got replaced.

I actually have 2 things to propose about this theory: 1. If the "Papyrus never moves" Theory is true and makes him Super Powerful, then this makes a ton of sense 2. Sans in Chapter 1 Says they just arrived in town a few days ago, maybe Gaster Convinced him to close the Closet Door on Kris and Susie. After all he might be familiar with the place by now, and we still don't know who closed it
@actinion633428 күн бұрын
The one thing stopping me from believing that Gaster is responsible for the Knight's actions is the fact that his actions would be contradicting each other. I do fully believe he's the Narrator, and thus he's responsible for bringing the player into the game. Why would he bring us in if we're the one that's sealing the same fountains that he's trying to open? Everything going on with us and Kris would only make his plan harder to fulfill, not easier.

@Jazz-cd5mu2 ай бұрын
Being a fan of something doesn’t mean you have to subscribe to a common fandom interpretation of the game. Chara as a villain is the narrative the game itself pushes, and there is little to suggest otherwise. The fact that Chara destroys the world at the end of a geno route alone makes them a villain to some degree at least.
@Sivanot2 ай бұрын
@Jazz-cd5mu Blatantly false. Chara hammers the point in that it is you who is responsible, not them. While you could say that's just villainous blame pushing, it's factually true that it's the player who is responsible, and that it is the player who corrupts Chara. Chara being the narrator is so well supported that it's only missing an explicit confirmation, and you can't tell me that the characterization of the narrator is just as evil as Chara at the end of a genocide route. The only thing you can provide to characterize 'normal' Chara as villainous is Asriel saying they weren't a good person, but we just don't have enough information to judge why exactly.
@Jazz-cd5mu2 ай бұрын
@@Sivanot Again, these are just fan interpretations, so I’m not sure if you can in good faith be using phrases like “blatantly false” and “factually true” here. While the player in the real world is controlling the game, the game’s actual narrative can be wishy washy as to how much control the player has. After all, Chara themself says “since when were you the one in control?” and does numerous things without the player’s permission, such as dealing the final blow to Sans and killing Flowey and Asgore. There’s also the whole “it’s me, Chara” thing that you only get in the genocide route. I really disagree with this idea that we’re “corrupting” Chara on a genocide route. There is plenty to suggest that Chara was pretty bad well before we awaken them. In the True Lab, we see Chara very much manipulating Asriel, who also mentions Chara laughing at their own father figure being poisoned by them. And perhaps most obviously is the fact that Chara had orchestrated a carefully constructed plan to massacre their own village and tried with all their might to force Asriel into doing it. That is a very villainous thing to do. As for Chara being the narrator, there’s only reason to think that’s the case in genocide, where the text is red and Chara actually says that it’s them. Anything beyond that is purely fan speculation.

Going to quote the comment i wrote on the community post for this video context, then address the points from this video directly... Bottomline, while clearly a lot of effort went into this video, I still really don't believe this rheory, and I think that if it was true, it would severely harm the story overall. (My community post comment) ________________________________ "A: He's an Undertale character. He had his game. Every main player in the Deltarune story (aside from the Dreemurrs) has been Deltarune character, the primary antagonist for most of the game would not be a character that we already got tons of screen time of in Undertale. Papyrus in particular got arguably the most screen time of any supporting Undertale character when you factor in his phone calls. B: He's a comic relief character (NOT a joke character mind you, a comic relief character). Yes there IS nuance to Papyrus, but not _thaaaaaaaaaaaaat_ much nuance. How utterly simple he is is the point. In contrast to Sans, who, while also being a comic relief character, has several moments of genuine tension and intrigue to very clearly foreshadow his more complex and serious side, Papyrus just doesn't because he's genuinely just that friendly simple and upbeat. Even the moments involving him that are meant to be serious or somber are serious and somber BECAUSE of the juxtaposition between his optimistic demeanor, and the hopelessness of the situation. If Papyrus WAS the Knight, with his Undertale personality, it would suck ALL OF the tension out of that part of the game. He would obviously not be doing it for any malevolent purposes, and he's not that confrontational, so when we encountered him he would just... Stop. No conflict. No nothing. And if he didn't have his Undertale personality than just *_make a new character_* He also has no motive. I've seen people suggest that he's opening Dark Worlds to try to make friends, but... • Why not open them in the privacy of his own room instead of scattering them around town haphazardly. • Such a suggestion is actually quite the flanderization of Papyrus' character. Papyrus was always VERY bold, confident, and incredibly secure. From the outside his eccentricity might seem cringe but it's because he's entirely genuine and sincere. He's FAR from desperate. To argue that he would literally be endangering the entire world, even unknowingly, for the sake of making some friends in the Dark Worlds, portrays him as uncharacteristically and excessively naive and insecure." ________________________________ Alright, to start, you brought up how Papyrus could be getting manipulated. That is admittedly a fair point given what happened with Flowey, it's a precedented idea. A few problems with that though: • Flowey and Papyrus' relationship is quite unique. More than most other characters, Flowey holds a particular attachment to Papyrus. Mostly out of amusement for his antics, potentially partially due to his sincerity, but he's the only one who actually knows Papyrus's favorite food, and even mentions, almost flatteringly in the post ending dialogue, that Papyrus made of "flowey fan club" for him, and that it took him quite a while to get bored of him. Obviously I'm sure he killed him more than a few times in other timelines, but the point remains that Flowey was, at least outwardly, a consistently trustworthy acquaintance of Papyrus' in the version of the Undertale timeline we start the game in even long before to Frisk fell down. It's not impossible that Papyrus could be manipulated in a similar way, put Papyrus getting manipulated that way buy flowey was not purely because of his naivety. There was a trust there. • The fact that Papyrus getting manipulated happened in Undertale COULD be used as evidence in favor of a similar thing happening again. Inversely, i believe it has the exact opposite effect. This would literally be the _exact same_ plot point, _again,_ and _wooooooooooooow_ that would be boring, no? _Lazy_ even. Not even going to sugarcoat it. I don't think Toby would so blatantly retread the exact same trope with the exact same character while also desperately trying to claim its not a Undertale 2. Which is exactly what i think Papyrus being the Knight, especially in this way, would make Deltarune. Papyrus and Sans already have so many things pointing towards them being connected to Deltarune, and for that reason i think theyre going to stay side characters. There to enrich the connection of the games _just_ enough while keeping them definitely seperate. Giving them any more relevance than that would make the game TOO connected to Undertale imo. That's all opinionated speculation though. Again. They had their game, and to squandered the opportunity for a new and interesting story with a remixed old trope from an old character would be unfortunate. The "INTERESTING COINCIDENCE"/"HOW INTERESTING" text on the name screen means nothing. That dialogue is shared with a ton of names, 18 to be exact, including Sans, Toriel, Undyne, Berdly, and QC. Is QC the Knight? Do they wanna wanna make the world a massive diner? 💀 Ultimately the problem comes down to this. CAN it be Papyrus? I mean. Yeah? I guess so? It's not like your theory contradicts anything. It all COULD happen... There's very little LITERAL evidence against it, just thematic evidence which is of course entirely subjective based on interpretation... But there's pretty much no actual evidence FOR it either. All of the evidence "for" Papyrus Knight mostly comes down to explaining why it's not IMPOSSIBLE. Why it COULD happen. Why there is OPPORTUNITY. But your job as a theorist isn't to explain why something could happen. It's to explain why it WILL. Even if you don't believe it. Speculation is fine, but before you get into that you have to explain not just why your candidate is it possible, but why they're more likely then alternative candidates. For example. Papyrus has no connection to the school or library that we know of. Your explanation for why Papyrus would open a dark Fountain here in spite of this is that the "Gaster told him to," but this isn't evidence, this is speculation. This doesn't explain why Papyrus has a connection to the school, it gives a reason why he MIGHT not need one. Take Alvin Knight for example, which, while admittedly flawed, is what I consider to be the best knight candidate so far. Does Alvin have a connection to the school? Yes. Full stop. No speculation. His dad, Gerson was a teacher there and the classroom he taught at (as well as the classroom Alvin was in when he was a kid), happens to be the abandoned classroom that the dark Fountain was created. It is AFTER you make this connection that you can then begin to go into speculation. Maybe this connection to the school gave him keys, and maybe that's why the door was locked behind Susie and Kris in Chapter 1 when they stepped into the closet. These speculatory arguments alone would be nothing without the foundation given by the fact that we know he has a connection to the classroom. But in this case? He's been manipulated before, so he MIGHT be getting manipulated now. It MIGHT be Gaster who is POTENTIALLY manipulating him because Papyrus PROBABLY have a connection to Gaster. There is no solid factual base. Not to mention that again, he's just a nice, sincere, uplifting comic relief character. If Papyrus was acting anything like himself (and he should be if the choice to make it him instead of a new character remotely justified), it would suck all the tension out. You would have a villain who isn't really committed to what they're doing. The second you tell Papyrus what is actually going to happen if he keeps opening these dark fountains, one of two things is going to happen. A: He's going to act in character and stop because he's a good guy who doesn't want to end the world, like Queen, which isn't something you want to compare the night to because the anticlimax of her redemption was the entire joke (and even then she was far more malevolent than Papyrus would ever be) B: He's going to act out of character and there's going to be artificial tension injected into the story. I don't believe that the night will be the final boss of the game but they will be the major antagonist for the majority of it, and for that to be the case they have to be convicted. They have to genuinely believe in what they're doing beyond The superficial in order to oppose us. That doesn't mean they won't be a puppet, but they have to be... You know... DETERMINED. Like King. I appreciate the effort that went into this video, but I'm just not convinced. If you made it this far thank you for reading my ramblings.

Wow, what a fantastic comment. You kind of just tore the Papyrus Knight theory apart for me. Very excellent analysis on the shortcomings of this theory.

As a person who somewhat likes papyrus knight but at the same time dislikes the feeling of flanderization of it has…. Yeah I agree very well, VERY VERY good comment.😊

@@jollyjadentnt7963 Yeah it's not even that I don't think the ideas presented in the theory wouldn't work or be interesting, it's just that I don't think they work particularly well for Papyrus and there's pretty much no evidence for them. In all honesty I think the idea of the Knight being manipulated in some capacity is borderline inevitable, for the simple reason that I don't think they're going to be the final boss. I think by the end everyone will have been played a fool by the true man behind the curtain *-cough-*- Gaster -*-cough,-* and the Pawns will all be in place; But I still vehemently believe that the Knight has to be someone who is convicted in their cause even IF the status was given to them by someone else, enough to provide a very potent and real threat. They have to have their own more personal motivations that supersede their reasoning. Not even necessarily selfish or destructive ones, but Papyrus, if written in character, just wouldn't. At all. He's not confrontational enough. In particular whenever it comes to wacky speculatory Knight theories, like most of the Undertale cast, motive seems to be the primary problem. Because of the fact that no one in Undertale is straight up evil, and most of them aren't even that selfish, you really have to twist their character out of shape to justify them being the Knight, which begs the question of why you're even trying to make the case for them in the first place when they basically have to be a new character anyway. It's a lot easier to attribute motive to Deltarune original characters like Alvin, Mayor Holiday, or even Ralsei (which has a whole host of its own problems don't worry 💀) simply because we don't have as comprehensive of an understanding about them. I feel like the Deltarune Theory community, while clearly very creative and passionate, tends to abandon common sense a little bit too quickly. Speculation is necessary for interesting theories because elsewise you just have base level deduction, but you can't skip straight to that step and just because it's more fun. That's what we call "writing fanfiction". Lol

@@SSL_2004 yeah my problem with some deltarune theorists is that they will ignore the idea that certain characters like the Knight or Gaster will truly be taken seriously in favor of the idea that Toby will turn any serious character or thing into scrubkly goober number #600. I mean don’t get me wrong, I LOVE goofy characters that have nuance to them. But at some point I actually do want a legitimately threatening and serious villain in deltarune… like haven’t we already had enough of goofy characters in Toby’s games? How is having an actual cryptic, serious, dark character not going to be unique? And whose to say it would be boring when we have Toby writing the characters?

im curious, wasn’t it mentioned that gaster was “scattered across time and space” in the true lab? please correct me if there’s any flaws with this theory, but maybe gaster’s trying to cause the roaring to merge the undertale and deltarune universes, and in turn, himself.
