Hi Rod! I am so glad you answered my question about your name! My name is Joanne and unfortunately suffer from treatment resistant depression hence my stupid KZbin name! Plants have been very important in my journey and of course my Hoya. Watching fellow plant lovers makes me happy-it feels like seeing a friend! So you are doing so much more than you realize! I love Dave and Miro too! I really do not know the correct spelling of his name but I find his sense of humor so refreshing! Thank you for all that you do!

Well, Joanne, if my videos are a bit of a bright spot, then I'm glad. It is nice to share experiences and hear the stories of other plant people, and does create something of a community. Miro is the correct spelling (it's short for Miroslav), and he is a riot. Dave, too, makes me laugh. Thanks for watching and adding your comment to the discussion.

Thanks, Dave, I appreciate that. I am very fortunate that in retirement I get to spend most of my days doing as I please and sharing my hobby with a wonderful community of people. I will admit that the walk from one side of the camera to the other was scary, but the people I've met have made that trip worthwhile. Best wishes for a "contentful" and "content-full" New Year.

Hi Rod! I have a younger cousin named Rodrick. I find shy or introverted people can be quite fun, honest and talkative! I'm the shy one😉! It use to be my handicap but I use It to my advantage. I'm glad you came on board as part of the hoya fam. ( And, Sober Plant Guy, Mona Plant Therapy, Full of Foliage, Doug Chamberlain to name a few) I was getting fed up with many who jumped on the hoya bandwagon during the pandemic and misleading with inexperience so my list of faves fortunately small. I started collecting hoyas in 2018 as well. Hoya was the best plant choice for me. They taught me patience thru research. I started buying plants in 1981. I can't count how many plants I've failed at! Thanks for sharing as usual. You've been a breath of fresh air! 👍🏽 Dee, NY

Thanks, Dee. I remember watching a very popular plant influencer and yelling at the TV "I can see the mealy bugs from here" when he showed his Hoyas. I even saw someone suggest painting the leaves with sugar water and vinegar to attract and then kill fungus gnats. I yelled at the TV then, too. I also saw many people making this hobby far more difficult than it needed to be, while I was just having fun. For me, as well, finding Hoyas was like "coming home" - actually most epiphytes. "Patience through research", I like that. Thanks, Dee, for watching and sharing your experience.

I think I started back in the 70’d too. I had a few back then but mostly it was the eighties that I started. Then I moved I had outside plants. I moved and moved and moved. Then I moved out of town and took lots of outdoor plants in pots to a third floor apartment that lined the outdoor walk way to my apartment. Then I moved out of town and took them with me to Portland My deck was a north facing balcony, and every thing died. I moved to another apartment with a south facing balcony in the winter. Didn’t realize th that the large trees outside of my balcony would turn green a few grow leaves. Then they got covered with flowers. Sticky flowers that dripped sticky sap all over my balcony. And the tree was covered in bees. They were everywhere. So I never used my balcony. Plants died. Then I moved a couple more times. I now have been in the same place for 12 years this coming March. And I got into indoor plants in 2018. I got a zz plant, a fan palm, and a peace lily. The peace lily and the zz plant got too big for the 1 gallon pot it was in. And most of the plant died off. I recently took the growing part and got it out of the pot and down sized the pot. Snd added grow lights to both. The palm got covered with spidermites. I couldn’t get rid of them so that plant went in the garbage. I now have 63 plants and most are Hoyas and ficus. Decidedly more Hoyas.

I want to add that it's fun to see someone enjoy his hobby. Thank you!! My question is how do you deal with pests? So far, all I've had (that I know of) are gnats. I didn't like the look of the gnat traps so I wash all my plants about once a month with Dave, The Sober Guy's, soap/alcohol/peroxide treatment. So far, so good. What do you do? How do you clean your plants since they get dusty, etc.?
@PlantedInRI3 күн бұрын
My solution for fungus gnats is twofold. Since most of my Hoyas are in pon, fungus gnats are much less of a problem, and I grow carnivorous plants. I had a Pringuicula and a Drosera, but I neglected the Pinguicula and it became compost. The Drosera is doing well and trapping fungus gnats effectively. They are very easy to grow and work very well, and you have an excuse to get another plant. I also now see fungus gnats as plant food and less of an annoyance. Remember that fungus gnats aren't so much of a leaf issue as a growing medium issue - they lay their eggs in the "soil" - so a solution on the leaves won't be as effective as you'd hope for gnats. Plus as we know, they can fly away. I'm reluctant to apply anything topical to plant leaves, particularly soap, but that's just me. When they're dusty I wipe them down with a microfiber cloth (particularly if they're going to be in a video) or put a bunch of them in the shower and use a spray bottle. Thanks for watching and commenting with your question.

Yes, humidity, or the lack thereof, will be an issue for growing Hoyas in your location. There are some that are more tolerant than others. I don't have cabinets or grow tents either, but I do run a humidifier in one room during the winter. The humidity doesn't need to be 85-90%, but 50% will make Hoyas happier. I don’t know where I got the green thumb from but my first love was African Violets. I had beautiful full sized ones, minis and micro-minis. I was also a member of the AVS. Sadly, my collection suffered a pest outbreak. ☠️ I also have thoughts of downsizing when it comes to watering. I break down my watering into sections so to speak so I don’t spend the entire weekend watering or doing plant chores. Aside from my Hoyas, I enjoy grow Monsteras, Philodendron, Epipremnum, a few Anthurium, succulents/cacti and carnivorous plants. I thought about Bonsai’s…someone featured a bougainvillea bonsai and that peaked my interest but I haven’t taken the plunge. I have regular bougainvilleas growing in pots so I can bring them in to the garage if the weather gets cold. (I ask my husband to do it) This was a fun video to wrap up the year with. I am glad you decided to get on the other end of the camera! 🎉Congratulations on 2k! 🎉

We introverts can go out and do our "interacting" thing, but then we come home and spend time doing our "alone" thing - it's a balance. When watering became an all day event, I also broke it down into sections - rooms, or in the case of the Hoya Room, into walls. If you're interested in Bonsai, Peter Chan - Heron's Bonsai - will make you brave, expecially his early videos. Thanks, as always, for watching and sharing your experiences.

Happy New Year! There is a question. I would like to understand the care of undulata. This has been an expensive experience! Two have died and I believe it was due to being cold - one lost quickly from shipping with no heat source (seller doesn't offer one) and the other because I went on vacation for a week and the house was set at 68 degrees ;-). So I think that may be the problem?
@PlantedInRI3 күн бұрын
That is a good question. I'm still figuring that one out myself. I had heard that they dont like being cold, but mine travelled during one of the coldest weeks with no problem. THe Hoya room is typically between 68°F and 74°F, which is cooler that what I'm told it wants, but so far so good. I did kill off the vine my touching it, but the plant seems fine. It does tend to slow way down durng the colder months, but when it warms up again there is growth. I use a nutrient solution in the reservoir, and I think it does want to be fed regularly. I wish I had more concrete suggestions. Thanks for watching and posing your question. Good luck with your next H undulata, 'cause I know you won't give up.

Thank you for the great video's. I love the way you talk about the plants. My question is if you have Hoya paulshirleyi and could show it. Background of my question: on the YT channel of Summer Rayne Oakes there is an item where she visited the nursery of Steves Leaves where they showed the whole Hoya collection. One of the plants briefly shown was H. paulshirleyi. Once a year I visit a garden fair in the north of the Netherlands themed 'Exotic plants' where other nurseries are invited. One of the regular guests is Paul Shirley from whom I bought some plants in the past. So this year I asked him about H. Paulshirleyi. Indeed the plant was called after him. He told about the plant collecting trip on Sulawesi where they found a piece of forrest chopped down. A lot of plants were just laying on the ground. One plant stood out and he took it back to his nursery in the Netherlands. Only when he could get the plant to bloom he would be able to tell whether it would be a new species. The plant bloomed and indeed was a new species. It did very well in his nursery (in his own words "the plant grew like weed") but then he relocated his nursery and the plant just would not do anymore and he lost it. He is planning to get it again so I am watching his website regurlarly.

Thank you. H paulshirley is a Hoya I don't have, yet, so I can't really talk about that Hoya. But I am familiar with Gerard Paul Shirley (he's the GPS in that accession number, as in Hoya GPS-7240). Summer's tours of Steve's Leaves (both the Hoya and the Begonia tours) were very interesting, and definitely worth watching. Thank you for watching and sharing your information.

I thought the rotundiflora was pretty stubborn. Mine lived on my west facing windowsill. Got pretty warm there. But I did water it a lot. Fighting mealies on it.
@PlantedInRI3 күн бұрын
If you'd seen the condition of the mother plant, you'd know how stubborn they can be. Those cutting had no right to survive and grow as well as they are..

Loved the Q&A so Hi Rod, I keep loosing thin leaf Hoyas. Lost 2 Bella’s, Patricia is holding on and praying for my second Iris Marie. I have gotten better with Multiflora. I also use coconut bark in self watering pots. Any suggestions. My first plant haul of 2025 should arrive in the next days all you featured. Happy New Year
@PlantedInRI2 күн бұрын
Thin-leafed Hoyas, particularly H bella and H multiflora, don't want to dry out, so there always needs to be liquid in the reservoir. I find that in my conditions, an organic mix in self-watering uses up the reservoir moisture faster than does pon, so I need to check them a couple of times a week. While they do want an airy mix, I think that coco husk chunks may not hold enough moisture for their needs. I'd consider adding long fiber sphagnum and tree fern fiber to the coco chunks, but not coco coir which has smaller particles and will fall through the chunks. Good luck with your plant haul. Thanks for watching and asking your question.

What do you use for flat mites? Sulfer, or something less visible!

Sulfur. It's easy and it works.

I want a krinkle eight too. And had one? It died. So that’s another one I need.
@PlantedInRI3 күн бұрын
You do want an H carnosas 'Krinkle-8' - a carnosa that grows well, has cool leaves, and blooms early, oh yes.

Could you do a propagation video .I am new to hoyas.
@PlantedInRI2 күн бұрын
Thanks, that's an interesting suggestion, and I'll add it to the list. There are lots and lots and lots of ways to propagate Hoya cuttings, and I tried several methods before I found what works for me. There is no "one way" or "best way", and you will probably need to experiment a bit to find the one that works best for you. Thanks for watching and including your suggestion.

Moving hoyas from soil to leca subject matter.
@PlantedInRI3 күн бұрын
I've was never very successful with leca, and it's not a growing medium I use. It was probably due to my lack of knowledge and experience. I would think that the process would be very similar to the one I use for transferring to pon, in that you would want to remove as much organic matter as is possible, the leca should be rinsed and moist before using, and that you'll need to use some kind of nutrient solution. Thanks for watching and adding your suggestion. If anyone reading has experience moving Hoyas to leca, please share your knowledge.

I do have one question. Where do you get those little round pots that hang on the wall. I have no flat space left and the wall is the next option for me. I’d love to get some of those.

Hi Rod, greetings from England since it wasn't on your list. Can't tell a lie, hoyas are not usually my thing but I now seem to have accumulated seven of them. I don't know which variety a couple of them are but there's definitely wilbur graves, black cat, flamingo dreams, pubicalyx purple and linearis. The pubicalyx I've had for at least three years and has never bloomed - any thoughts why not? The only one which has bloomed is the linearis which had loads of flowers. The content I'd be interested in is trellises and why you choose a certain type. Are the hoop ones not a good idea? I don't have any so would like to know which is best. Secondly, I prefer trailers rather than climbers and your Heuschkeliana looked like a great choice - are their any others you would recommend for trailing?
@PlantedInRIКүн бұрын
I, too, was surprised that nobody from England commented with their location since the last time I did the list there were several. H pubicalyx varieties can sometimes take a while before they begin blooming, and there are several Hoya varieties that are like that - they need to be well established before they bloom. Your H carnosa 'Wilbur Graves', H callistophylla 'Black Cat', H pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple', and H carnosa 'Flamingo Dreams' (it's really helpful to learn the full names of the plants, you'll be able to find out more about them) are all types that need to be well settled before they bloom - the H callistophylla will probably be the first. Just give it time and good conditions, and they will bloom. My trellis decisions are bassed entirely on space. I have a lot of Hoyas, and space is at a premium. I find hoop trellises to be too wide for my situation. Remember that in nature all Hoyas want to climb, it's what they do. Some can look great as trailing plants - H lacunosa, H pandurata, H lyi, and H burmanica to mention a few - but the all want to climb. Thanks for watching and including your question.
