We have 4 hens. Our coop is smaller. We have only moved it a couple of times. They are just over a year old. We use organic layer feed. Where it was last year over 10 tomato plants came up from scraps we fed them. They were cherry tomatoes but growing in the compost they are as big as my palm. Having chickens is a learning experience for our family. My husband grew up on a chicken farm. I love your videos. I learn from you.

That portable chicken coop is a great innovation for having to go in and shovel the chicken poo out of the pen. Furthermore moving it around every few days would evenly spread it on the yard and save having to load it up onto a truck bed and then shovel it off. The chickens would be a lot happier , cleaner and healthier. Yes, We had the same problem with coyotes robbing the chicken coop. Grandma had a habit of looking out the window to see if she could spot them. We also had a sand bin in the cellar where we keep the potatoes, turnips and carrots. However, everybody bought big freezers for preserving the food and canning became a thing of the past. I sure miss it all!

Hi Melissa, love your videos & newsletters! Thank you for educating us. We're hoping to retire to So. Dakota (or somewhere similar) in the next 10 years, so you are my mentor in making that move. Watching your chicken tractor made me think of Joel Salatin's method of rotating 3 groups on pastured land: small (chicken), medium (pig/goat), and large (cow) to keep the land and grasses healthy. There was another man (if I'm recalling correctly, from So. Africa) who also promoted this system to restore drought land in Africa. I'm looking forward to making our own coop tractor when we move from our concrete jungle!

We have a chicken tractor for exactly the same reason: foxes and jackals (not to mention the neighborhood dogs). We had a rural guesthouse, the grass looked fantastic, and the guests loved to interact with the animals. Now that we moved to the hillside, it's parked under the cherry trees because the rough terrain doesn't allow for much movement. They share a piece of land with our (ornamental) sheep.

We use a chckshaw and an electric net. Keeps my neighbors crazy German shepherds out, and they’ve tried... repeatedly. We have 14 ladies, and move them once a week. The can chill under the chickshaw, and uv zip tied 2 hog panels together and clipped plastic to it so there’s more rain/hawk protection. We do have some trees in our pasture, and we like to keep the chickens under trees if possible for added protection. We haven’t had any fatalities yet 🙌🏻 but we have had golden eagles, bald eagles and hawks present often watching... 😳 so far we like it. We just move the coop a few feet in the mornings, but my 9 year old daughter can move it, it’s light.

Thanks for the video. I am a new subscriber and saw your coop in another video and wondered about its specs. I feel you on the need to have something lighter to move and bottomless to keep from having to clean the floor, which was a problem we had with a chickshaw-style tractor. Right now we have a small movable coop which we surround with electric netting. Only problem is hawks and kites. 😑 So now we put the netting really close together, tips practically touching forming an A-frame tunnel. Seems to be working for the moment. About your beef cattle, do you have them on intensive rotational grazing? I am too new to your channel to have come across any such videos yet. Thanks for your time.

How large is the coop itself and how many chickens comfortably fit in there? What breeds do you have that live in such tight quarters so well?

We have 9 chickens in it. They need 4 square feet per chicken and the tractor alone provides 80 square feet. They really only go in the coop at night to roost and sleep. We have Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex and an Olive Egger, I've also had Silver Wyandottes.

You live in a northern climate, correct? We live in MN and are tempted to change from a stationary coop to a chickshaw or chicken tractor like this but... not sure how feasible it is for the chickens in the winter. Last year they weren't fans of the snow and pretty much stayed in the run all winter even though we would open the door for them. Just wondering what you do for that since it's hard to find homesteaders that deal with winters for their animals. :)

I have mine in a stationary coop with no floor. Put down wood chips, leaves, old hay & you don’t have to shovel. Throw in some kitchen scraps, grass, etc & chickens scratch it all together to make great compost. Then just have to shovel the compost when you need it.

I also had to mourn the loss of free range hens. Not necessarily because of predators, but because they wonder over to the neighbor's property and tear up their lovely landscaping and poop on their back porch. Naughty girls. We tried the best we could to move their run around the coop to different spots but they tear it up so fast that they every option turned to bare ground. I'm sad they get less room to roam, but glad that they get lots of fresh grass every day, are protected, and are leaving the neighbors alone. I'd like to consider adding a run around it so that I can move it once a week instead of every day. But we would have to net the top since they are escape artists. We will move them back to the main coop once the garden burns up (in Texas, that's by August). I'll let them tear up the garden before prepping it for fall.
