This song makes so much sense now: The black couple in the beginning were together, yet they were not happy. So I feel the dancing, alone, is a symbol for independence. They don't want to be together, they don't want to stay together. So when they both realize it, they are given an Ace of Hearts for the ladies, and Ace of Spades for the men, to say you can leave. The second couple, the girl is done with the relationship, why she left HIS jacket behind, and why she walked out like the previous girl. The guy however, cannot let her go. He is dancing with his eye closed, he would rather be in a mediocre relationship than not at all because he either loves her too much, or he is too insecure to be independent. So why when he sits back down, she barely acknowledges him because she wants out but he is not meeting her halfway.

My little brother who 6 year old is a massive fan of Years and Years. This song is his favourite. He can't stop playing, I hear it everyday after school. He literately blast it out and copy the dance moves in the video and sing the lyrics at the top of his lungs. It's amazing that a 6 year knows good music when he hears it.

Years and years later I think I finally understand the video. The people are dancing because they are having a good time with their partner the first person leaves at the sight of love the second leaves at the sight of misfortune. With the second couple, the first leaves at the sight of love and the second doesn’t care about misfortune he still want to be with her and have fun and that brings her back to him. He looks at her in the end to basically say I’m not letting you go during the bad times. Ollie is playing devil’s advocate.

My understanding of this video: I think Olly's meant to be a demon (disguised as an angel) that can change the fate of a couple. A partner picks a card used later as a call to dance, to prove their worth. (The lead guy got four of hearts and when Olly pulled out a four of hearts, it was his time to perform by dance) Olly eventually gives either a heart or a spade. A heart is the symbol of love. And a spade is a tool used for digging/cutting. Seeing as there are only these two cards (ace of hearts and ace of spades) on Olly's table I would think they are opposites. One is promise of love and the other is promise of conflict. With both couples, Olly shows each partner first a heart and the next one a spade. Half love, half conflict. Which is a recipe for passionate disaster. Once a card has been dealt the partners accept his/her individual fate and leave. But unlike the other three, the lead guy just keeps on dancing, refuses to show his eyes and ignores everyone else's presence. I think he was feeling frustrated and bored in the beginning of the clip. But by the end he lets go of himself, feeling only the music and doesn't want to accept a change of heart. So we see Olly looking upset and then slumping his head in defeat. Meanwhile the lead's date returns to her seat once again, wearing his jacket, I think. It could have all just been thoughts in his head; trying to figure out if she even likes him or if he'll let her go. I think the clip is meant to be about how we can switch our fate despite given judgment and how appearances are not really what they seem. Do you agree/disagree? Would love to hear any alternatives !! Oh and the Olly 'demon & his council' prey on idleness. Moral of the story : don't always accept defeat, ignore the judgement and dance to your own drum.

This is beyond deep. I've never heard such a beautiful voice and the beat just adds to the entire feel of the song, I really do love olly and I think he should never stop making music. He's perfect for it. This video though just simply blows my mind. It is art is one of its purest forms and it should be praised and appreciated for all it's worth.

Sometimes you hear a song or band and know they will have a hit or two. Then there are a few times however when you hear and see a band and feel that this may be the sound of a monumental shift in the musical spectrum. I may be going overboard in saying this but this band may be that shift. This is more than just good music this is groundbreaking in my opinion.
