THIS is artistic gymnastics!!! Head held high, eyes open, looking around the arena, using the music and performing a FX. All young gymnasts should watch this and similar performances and be amazed and in awe and wowed and try to be better on the artistic level. All gymnasts at elite level are technical, some more than others for various reasons, but we need to bring the artistry back to gymnastics again!!!

front layout to immediate punch double-front is a very hard pass that barely anyone competes (Japanese junior Sae Miyagawa does it, but she's the only one I can think of). Few gymnasts have this much front-tumbling in their routines because it's very hard to land consistently; Produnova was a real innovator in that area.

Such an underated gymnast, if she was born 8-12 years later, her power could've been put into great use, the medals she won don't fully represent how great she was, could've been a vault and floor gold medal contender, maybe beam as well. She could've probably remained an AA threat in Beijing as well

Produnova had qualified for the all-around finals, where she was a legitimate medal threat. However, she had broken her foot during the Olympics and, bitterly disappointed, had to withdraw. I took this out of wikipedia. In essence won a bronze medal on beam with a broken foot. I don't know if her foot was broken here. She's tough as nails.
@ServingUptheT9 ай бұрын
It was on the vault - she went 9.800 on bars, 9.775 on beam and 9.725 on floor (should have been 9.825 if she hadn’t tucked the final pike front somi) - what a warrior! However after the competition was over clearly her foot began to stiffen up!
@intldawn13 жыл бұрын
@MoceanuReturns Agreed. The four of them had style and performance quality totally unmatched by the rest of the competition. Each of those routines is captivating and perfectly matched to their personalities. If they'd all gotten into the 9.8's, as they deserved, they probably would have edged out Romania for the title.

I love that team too. This 2000 team I feel is the strongest. The Gold was in their hands and they messed up and lost it. I won't count the AA because of all the issues and well Russia Dominated EFs like they should have in the Team and AA. Both are great teams. I like Lysenko from 1992
@timduggal85956 жыл бұрын
They only dominated in event finals since all other countries screwed up, the same way Romania won in team and AA due to the Russians crewing up. On vault Moya would have won doing her best vaults, and Raducan could have easily won over Zamo too. Khorkina only won bars due to Line Jie's hop on the landing. Beam Russia getting any medals, especialy Produnova getting one was an epic joke, Raducan and the Chinese being there and hitting crush them, even Karpenko beats them. And floor Romania would have gone 1-2 with Raducan and Amanar if both hit. And a sloppy joke of a gymnast like Zamo getting 2 event golds is a complete farce, and only shows how much a splatfest event finals were. Had a real talent like Produnova (not on beam, but on vault, bars, and for sure floor) or Khorkina gotten 2 golds maybe, but not crap like Zamo.

For some reason the judges only gave her a 9.9 start value here. One of the other non-NBC broadcasts showed that the judges conferenced about her start score, which given how close the Russians were to Romania every tenth of a point was critical for Russia to have any hope to remain in contention for winning the gold. Not sure if she didn't get CV credit for the front tuck on her last pass since she had already performed it on her first. To think if she had gotten the 10 SV the Russians would have only lost the competition by .105. Regardless this is still one of my favorite Olympic FX performances of all time.
@neos.herakles15 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you. The Romanians under Belu used to do uniform and lack-luster routines for any apparatus they were weak on, like uneven bars and balance beam (with the exception of Catalina Ponor). On vault, they produced two powerful vaulters: Simona Amanar and Monica Rosu. Floor was definitely their forte, considering they won it at the Olympics in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 2004, and 2008.
@tedsler13 жыл бұрын
@dahighbar I second that! You don't have to be a ballerina in a FX to be artistic. Give the audience some form of emotion/attitude and we believe it. I think above all, gymnasts in general need to open their eyes and look around them when they perform to connect with the audience and draw them in to their FX. So often you see gymnasts holding their heads high, but looking down their nose and all you see are their eyelids. I LOVE this routine. A 80 second fierce story told perfectly!

@markelov - I agree with mmoran, I think Elfi meant something more than just "doing your routine in front of the judges". We can't really see it, but I think Elfi was talking about how Elena boldly did certain moves right in front of the judges' table. Those former Soviets (both skaters & gymnasts) have been known for such tricks w/ the judges.
