We just spotted one outside our window today! Live in the Piedmont of NC. I had never seen one before.

Being raised in the south they were (as you stated) called rain crows, I heard them constantly in the summer but for the life of me I could never lay eyes on one, finally I got a good look at one a few years back (yep, took me nearly a lifetime), then began dig'n around to find out what they really were, a cuckcoo ?? say what !! had no idea but Im still in love with them, takes me back to being 12 years old and picking black berries with my fave uncle.

I had the opportunity to experience a yellow bill cuckoo today up close. He seemed to be in a scuffle with a Robin and wasn’t knocked out or disoriented, but came to my side by a chair I was sitting on. It perched up next to me and didn’t move radically or seem scared at all. I Sat next to it for a while and slowly pet it to which he came onto my hand. After about 30 minutes it flew off to a tree right next to me and stayed there. Beautiful bird and I hope I see it again. To state the circumstance: It was upset from being chased clearly, but I happened to slowly pet it and it’s bill closed. It calmed down and came onto my hand willingly; as I reached out for about 20-25 minutes. I am glad it flew off normally after this situation and I hope to see it again. A similar experience I had was when I rescued a separate young bird that was abandoned on the sidewalk with visibly bleeding, with the neighbors kids poking at him. He couldn’t fly and seemed stressed so I took him in. I named him Rico and for about 5 weeks Rico was ready to be back it seemed. When Rico left his parents were right there on the patio as they have been most of the days. I wonder where rico is now. I

For the longest time I thought the 2 sounds came from different birds. Grew up with the rain crow sound in South Dakota here in Missouri I mostly hear the pump jack sound. Often attributed the rain crow sound to the pileated woodpecker, which here is some time called a wood hen because it kinda sounds like a hen being scared off her nest

I've only seen a yellow billed cuckoo once, here in Florida where I live. In my country, St. Lucia, we have mangrove cuckoos but the local name is "coco mayok." Interestingly, in the other Anglophone West Indian islands they're known as "the rain bird" for the reason you just articulated re. the yellow-billed. Hard to see, but really cool birds.

Totally tricky to see...which is true of the Black-Billed Cuckoo as well (at least in my experience). Thanks for watching and please share!

Question how would you tell the gender of them? I have a friend who recently found one it's injured and it hides its neck from her and her family is that bad

The sexes are similar. Unless they're mating or egg laying, I don't know how to tell them apart.
