細野さんの曲なので、本人がリードシンセでメロを弾きたいだろうにそれを坂本さんにまかせ、自分はベースにてっするところが逆にカッコイイ

Jarre still tours regularly. Some of his shows are massive extravaganzas to literally millions of people. He believes in using the original instruments that made the recording whenever possible. Because the recordings were built up layer upon layer, to do this live he needs a big inventory of vintage synths, and performs with about five or six additional musicians. Here's a recent live performance of Oxygene. Spot the modular Moogs, Mellotrons, a slew of EMS Synthis. watch?v=sVY_17d1KkM

I'm not sure this is fair. Apart from Hosono and Takahashi, Tomohiko Gondo is playing the horns live, and Cornelius can't walk away and let his guitar play itself. (Not sure about Fennesz - frankly I can't tell what he's doing. I prefer when Ren Takada has that chair, because, pedal steel!) Some keyboard parts are canned, but Sakamoto is playing most of the leads. Compared to that glitchy electronica stuff they did at the Meltdown festival they're playing with much more fire lately.

Fair enough, but I'm more impressed by the way Jean Michel Jarre does it, using all of the same vintage synths from the original recordings live.

But that's never been their MO. They have radically re-worked arrangements of their material repeatedly. Sometimes harkening strongly back to the originals, but more often then not de-then-reconstructing them. And to be honest, music performance doesn't necessarily have to be an exercise. If the mood works, it works.

Sad that most of it is digital now.. just doesn't compare how it used to sound back in the 70's/80's even with lower video quality.

Maybe I missed your point. Does Jarre still perform? That would be something to see.

I'm not sure if this works. 33 years ago it was amazing how forward YMO's sounds were, and they got such tight sounds out of a bunch of what were then state of the art analog synths, with no MIDI of anything else to tie things together. Today those sounds are just a click of a preset away, and you know they could just hit one button, walk away, and the song would play itself. Sure Takahashi's drumming is still tight along with Hosono's bass playing, but the rest just seems like an exercise.

I realize this is a 10 year old discussion, but the thing about YMO is they have always embraced technology. I guarantee that they're aware of that line of criticism and went ahead anyway. I mean, it's kind of different now. There's not really much "cutting edge" technology in music anymore, and YMO is well outside of it now. If they just ignored all of the new digital stuff, would they really be as progressive as they were in the 70's and 80's? Of course not. It doesn't make them lazy, hell the fact that they got together and played shows at all proves otherwise. Hell I think all 3 of the guys are absolutely on top of it, this whole San Fransisco show is a gem. However, I do see what you're saying about the tone. I think it would be cool if they drug out the Moogs and stuff, but that shit weighs a metric shit load, and by modern standards is outdated as hell, so I get it lol. I'm curious if you've heard Hosono and Takahashi's Sketch Show stuff? They used a lot of the new computer tools from the early 2000's, and Sakamoto even helped with a handful of tracks. It's a different vibe than YMO, but it's very interesting nonetheless. I do know that Sakamoto himself is still super into analog synths and stuff, he uses them a lot in his ambient stuff nowadays. I think they viewed the YMO reunion as a continuation of Sketch Show, incorporating what made those albums unique with older YMO stuff, which makes sense, because they would be putting it in a new context.
