The comparison works because Animal was roughly based on Keith Moon, and Chapman was playing Yellowbeard as if Keith Moon.

@@ristorantanen5769 true but time bandits is time traveling rather than a set peroid, Life of Brian is Monty Python proper rather than just having some Python members involved or just a Python flavor. As I see it Life of Brian, Holy Grail & The Meaning of life are the Python religion trilogy so kinda stand apart. But LoB & Holy Grail certainly could fit in with Baron Munchausen, Eric the Viking & Yellow Beard Unmade is unqualified 😂

I actually loved Yellowbeard, and am surprised more people don't. There are valid complaints to be sure, and you've highlighted several, but still, slightly madcap films loaded with diverse comedians can be great fun to watch. The three things I especially loved were the cast, the absurdity of the plot, and the general spoofing of pirate movies. Graham Chapman was great as the title character, and the rest of the cast did their schtick admirably. There was terrific Easter eggs throughout, with Monty Python like comedy details that go under the radar. If it is a "bad" movie, it is one I've seen several times, and will watch again for the fun.

Yellowbeard is Graham Chapman's show and he's ruddy superb in it; a real force of nature and the polar opposite of his timorous "Brian" character in that beloved biopic. In fact, they're all superb - Madeline Khan, Peter Cooke, Marty Feldman, John Cleese, James Mason. So many quotable lines. And that bizarre cameo from David Bowie as the "shark" still comes out of absolutely nowhere.

Yellowbeard wasnt a bad movie! It had some of the greatest comedy talent of the 20th century, with most of them not being here today. In fact a few died not long after the movie was made. I guess people try to compare it to an official Monty Python movie, but you cant do that, because there are levels, and just because this movie wasnt at the top level, it doesnt mean it was at the bottom.

Roman Polanski's Pirates with Walter Matthau is a must watch and a great addition to anyone's vídeo collection who have a serious love for romanticised pirate films. Its truly a masterpiece thats been forgotten somewhat over the years. The cast, the enormous amount of money that went into building the ships and sets and without CGI, the drama behind the scenes when promoting the film all make up for 2 hours of what is now very nostalgic and pointed when comparing to later black comedy pirate films that came after.

I was a teenage Python fan when this came out, and had just discovered Cheech and Chong, so my hopes were high when I went and saw it, and for the most part I really liked it, though I don't think it really deserves to be in the Python canon. There is some Python-worthy stuff in there, though, like Mr Prostitute (which still makes me laugh) and Queen Anne played by that heavily-jowled and deep-voiced (male) actor. Some of C&C's gags are good too, though it's not quite up to Up in Smoke's level (then again they made quite a few terrible movies). The cast were really good, especially Madeline Kahn and Eric Idle (Cleese goes without saying). Some stuff has definitely not aged well at all though, like all the rape jokes. All in all, a movie with this much talent involved should've been a _lot_ better, which I think is how it's always been regarded.

The film was not about the "Yellowbeard story," it was about every pirate film ever made AND a cutting social satire of 17th Century politics. It was the commitment to historical accuracy that made the outrageous behavior so funny. And how was it received by what is clearly its target audience? I dare you to go to any Renaissance Fayre and say "stagger, stagger, roll" and see what happens.

Peter Boyle and the son were the only drawbacks in that they didn't get enough 'comedy schtick' to move their characters along. Considering what most 'comedies' consist of, this was brilliant. Its VERY rare to have the comedy movies that will try to be ALL jokes. Monty Python, Mel Brooks, the Airplane, Police Squad movies, thats about it. MOST are comedies as a 'genre', meaning, more like a dramady. But then there is a place for everything, but without Terry Jones and Michael Palin, it really suffers. Terry Jones in Peter Boyle's spot would have been magical, and Michael Palin at least making guest spots like David Bowie's would have made it a Python film. The idea that its 'bad' is ludicrous, comedy of course is selective, because you don't like it doesn't make it 'bad'. There are LOTS of people who just don't think Python is funny, but to call Python 'bad' as a result is ludicrous. I'm amazed at the commenters here stating that 'they can't find it', good lord, people DO know how to find movies right?

This wasn't a bad film, it was a great satire of pirate films. Of course it's silly and absurd, it's full of actors who excelled in that way. After first seeing the movie I came across so called hardcore Python fans who never heard of it. Anyone who thinks it's a bad movie needs to lighten up and stop thinking all movies must be the same or not understand deadpan humor. Around the same time people hated films like Student Bodies and Sleepaway Camp because they made fun of things and again deadpan humor. Saying Yellowbeard is bad is like me looking at Fawlty Towers and dismissing the entire show because sometimes the walls shaked. Does it make you laugh? That's all you need to know.

It isn't the Sixth Worst Comedy I've Seen this month. Underated BIG time. Time Bandits. Strange Brew and Yellowbeard. All Classics. All Misunderstood.

Thanks for posting this about one of my favourite films. I don't know about "lost". I've been watching it and enjoying it about every 2 years since it came out. It was unaccountably panned by critics but is slowly becoming a cult classic. Apart from the incongruous inclusion of Cheech and Chong (whom I liked in the 1970's) it is full of great bits. I don't know why critics say it has an incomprensible plot. Maybe they're Americans who don't get the cultural references, like Queen Anne and Lady Churchill, or Blind Pew from Treasure Island.

Judging the movie based on the many posters is silly. This is done often, to appeal to the local culture. I'm sure you know that.

The sixth worst? If you're an American, Edward D. Wood made at least three of them, so there's not much room for the other three. Of British cinema, some stinkers were so bad, so unfunny, or incomprehensibly edited that the distributors didn't even attempt to market them across the pond. The worst British film, film as in something that floats in stagnant puddles, worst as in unfunny and incompetently executed by all concerned, that I've watched or attempted to watch, is "Mother Riley Meets the Vampire", marketed in the USA as "My Son the Vampire". What an insidious bore that was, not even worth your time as an entertaining object of ridicule. Of minor interest, Bela Lugosi managed to star in four of the Ten Worst on my personal list. That's a noteworthy accomplishment of sorts. Actually, I have two Ten Worst lists. One contains movies that I deem totally unworthy of my effort to watch, "Mother Riley Meets the Vampire" is on that one. The other is the Ten So Bad They're Good list. These are the unintentionally hilarious movies that are truly rewarding to watch, though one can't avoid feeling guilty for laughing at the afflicted. Low-budget sci-fis from the 1950s seem prone to membership on "Ten Worst" lists, and on mine, the British cinema contribution is "Devil Girl from Mars". That one is a hoot. A devil girl from Mars storms into a remote Scottish country hotel, insults everyone there, leaves, then returns seven to ten minutes later to do the same thing over again without even fresh insults to fling at the puny Earthlings. Sounds boring, but the nine-foot-tall walking refrigerator released by the devil girl when she grows tired of hurling abuse makes "Devil Girl from Mars" a must-see. Yellowbeard isn't on either of my "Ten Worst" lists. It's entertaining enough. I've always enjoyed anything Michael Horden worked on. The Pythons are OK -- much better together than separately --- but OK. I've never been a doper so Cheech & Chong have generally fallen short of my comedy expectations. Without drugs that make one laugh at anything, Cheech & Chong just flop. Watching Tommy Chong trying to walk with that gigantic whatzit on his head was fun. Marty Feldman was always effective, even in death.

David Sherlock wasn't just Chapman's boyfriend of the time, they'd been together since 1966, a few years before Python even, and remained together till Chapman's death.

I think that is just semantics. Some people call their long time lovers “partner” others say girlfriend or boyfriend. I have always used the later. It’s not meant as comment on their commitment to each other.

John Cleese even said that David told him that he didn't think Graham was actually gay and that it was likely 'a phase'. Relationships are complicated things, certainly what we know of Graham Chapman is that he wasnt in a gay monogamous relationship since 1966.

Well there's Chapman and Cleese and Idle and a few others like Feldman who worked with several Pythons in the past but Yellowbeard is a goofy and frankly out-dated (in 1982) comic flick that was a dud then and especially compared to Time Bandits. Not many pirate flicks (comedy oriented) have ever done well...even Polanski flopped when he did Pirates a few years later. But this was quite stupid even when trying for goony humor. The cast is game for the most part but so much is just an insult to their talents. I was 15 when this came out back then and even as a knucklehead teen I was cringing at what a cornball and silly flop this was.

Graham Chapman visited Wright State University near Dayton, Ohio in the fall of 1981 on a US lecture tour and I asked him about Yellowbeard during his Q&A. It tripped him up to even talk about it and everyone could see he didn't want to talk about it.

@@TheJuRK According to Wiki, it looks like the production was a mind-blowing disaster. From a Keith Moon idea...that`s your first problem. And they wanted to make the film American, to appeal to Americans. Next big mistake. Why didn`t George Harrison and Handmade get involved? That`s the big question.

By worst, do you mean production values? If so then no, it was filmed the way it was to make it seem bad as a joke. That is what makes it a classic comedy. It was done as a nod to the way the Pythons recorded their movies (at least Grail). I bought a copy of "Yellowbeard" on VHS while in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany in 1988 after watching it with my roommate who had seen it in the States while in College. Too this day I think it belongs in the Top 20 of all time funniest movies.

This was one of my favorites! It was almost like Monty Python but not quite it was almost like Mel Brooks but not quite. And... I didn't really like the Cheech & Chong parts much. But back then there wasn't much of Monty Python anymore and I always enjoyed that humor. It's like a cult film you really have to be a fan to enjoy.

This was one of the movies everyone in Gen X saw because it made cable rotation. My wife hadn't seen it (she didn't have cable back then) so I got to show it to her about 15 year ago - and she loved it. Everyone needs to remember this is some of the people who made The Holy Grail - if the pacing, narrative, and ending aren't up to your expectations... well, it HAD pacing, narrative, and an ending, at all, and that's more than I expect from this lot. I expect to laugh, and I do when I watch this movie.

In the late 80’s between attempts at college I worked at a non-blockbuster video store. So I watched EVERYTHING that was available up until that point. I saw this film and had to see it because of everyone who was in it, except for Cheech and Chong who I didn’t get at the time. I remember feeling disappointed that it wasn’t really a python film and wasn’t really any other kind of film. As time has gone on I have found moments in it that are so hilarious I am tempted to make friends watch it. I have learned not to do so unless they have the same list of most loved actors as I do. People who dont love it just because of who those folks are cannot be convinced. Except for my wife who is about to be subjected to it and I’m sure she will make sure I understand she loves it even as she refuses to finish watching it...

No, it's not the 6th worse movie ever made. I think it's main problem was not being one thing or the other. It wasn't British and it wasn't American. Now I'm sure there's other things I might think if the last time I sawr it wasn't when I was 12, over 30 years ago. But I still stand by it's good because it's bad status and I'd still recommend it, not that my opinion means jack. Also I have seen Mischief, one of the directors actual movies. It was kinda fun as I recall.

I think it's worth watching once. I want to say that I remember it being very funny in the first 30 or so minutes, but then it kind of falls apart the further it goes on. Probably could've been a classic if Jones or Gilliam directed.

Having watched it six or more times in parts and completely I am constantly quoting from it or recommending it to strangers; Stagger, stagger, roll, crawl, a little rough cuddle, no it was rape I tell ya. We Yellowbeards aren't half as dangerous until we are dead.

There is a scene in Yellowbeard where a sailor tries to sneak a woman on board and naturally she gets kicked off. Well, the camera follows her as she leaves the ship and as she walks away she bumps into a sailor carrying a lamb and says "best not, they're fairly strict on this ship, Love" I died 😂😂😂😂😂
