personally, i still think that the Vic firth over the ear headphones are the best... they ahve built in speakers in them so you can plug them into your ipod but it still protects your ears really well. however if you cant do that, i would suggest in ear head phones as long as they actually block out the sound. if you still have to crank the sound to hear the music, you are just going to be hurting your ears more then using regular buds with something over the top

well for drums alone, probably not, it would cut out too much noise.. but i dont know if you mean they wouldnt cut out enough noise at a show, or they would cut out too much noise at a show. personally, when i did some live work, i found it nice to have ear buds that you can hear yourself, but still hear the other musicians around you

its actually a sony in ear head phone set... cost like 20 bucks, but work really really well at canceling out almost all sound.. it almost does too good of a job, i have noticed i kinda mess up more when using those becuase i cant actually hear what im doing on my drum set

The Sony Fontopias? And yeah, I have some SHURE Noise cancelling earbuds for listening use, not the live models, but they cancel out almost everything and I don't think they would be viable for shows.

well it all depends on how well the headphones cancel out the noise. some do it better then others
