Huge fan here, beaten every game dozens of times, and I totally agree with this list for first timers. The only thought I've had about it was that Skyward Sword tends to be a game fans of the series don't like, but newcomers seem to love! I've turned a few people onto the series, and they seemed to love it
@heidigreen84686 жыл бұрын
I started with Twilight Princess, which I enjoyed but often found the twilight aspect blurry and hard to see. I enjoyed Skyward Sword so much for the overall colour and light atmosphere. It's my favorite in the series, even after I'v played most of the games now, except for Breath of the Wild. :)

Taylor Jorgenson ya ss was my first when it first came out. Even after playing 7 other Zeldas 100 percent, it's my second favorite after botw. Motion controls worked perfectly for me
@iamkat5e6 жыл бұрын
Skyward Sword was my second game, so I played it when I was still relatively new to the series. I find that fans that played dozens of Zelda games prior may have had a preconception of how a Zelda game *should* be, and when SS had come out, it was met with negativity from those fans. And like you said, the newer fans took in the idea of motion controls as a novelty, and enjoyed the game for what it had to offer. I loved the game and had no issue with the controls. I am also massively generalising here but it's something I've observed among fans reading through comments and threads.

I'd argue A Link between Worlds is the best way to start. 1. It's cheap. You can often get it WITH a 2DS for under 100 €/$. 2. The controls are very straight forward and easy to learn. 3. 60fps. Just saying. 4. Even though it's technically a sequel to ALttP, it doesn't depend on it in any significant way apart from a little bit fanservice. 5. The design of OoT and ALttP is outdated, they offer an "Open World" but you still have to do your quests in a specific order. Some things are pretty cryptic too. In ALbW you can do whatever whenever and how you want.

It goes like this -Skward sword -Minish cap (skipable) -Four swords (skipable) -ocarina of time Then the timeline splits into 3 1.If you want link to die in the final battle,then he reincarnates in these games -A link to the past - seasons or ages (skipable) -Links awakining -Zelda 1 -Zelda 2 2 (child timeline) .Link beats gannon. Zelda sends link back in time instead to warn her past self of the coming events. -Majoras mask -twilight princess -Four swords adventures (skipable) 3(adult timeline).Link beats Gannon here aswell. You reincarnate most likely after the child timeline and relive your childhood after going back in time.So after finishing the child timeline you play these. -Windwaker -Phantom hourglass -Spirit tracks And then you play breath of the wild,which somehow reunites the 3 timelines.

Technically, my first Zelda was Ocarina of Time, but I kind of don't count that because it was just my older cousin and I years ago handing me the controller just so he could laugh and watch me get destroyed by the Moblins in the hedge maze just before the forest temple. Ahhh, those were the days lol! The first Zelda game I ever really played with my friend was Zelda 2, I loved it, and still do. My favourite of the series to date is Twilight Princess, so I'm a bit of an odd guy out with Zelda, being that my two favourites of the series are kind of not to everyone's liking. Great list by the way, I'll be sure to give it to anyone who is looking to get into Zelda!
@nazoneon36386 жыл бұрын
This is pretty cool. I've been playing Zelda for awhile now, so it isn't like I need to know where to start or anything. But it was kinda neat to see all the games lined up like that, and see just how different they all really are. Plus, if anyone tells me they want to get into the series, but they don't know where to start, I'll probably show them this.
@LeopoldLitchenstein6 жыл бұрын
Perfect starting games in my opinion: Ocarina of Time. It's iconic, basic, and linear, with enough extra stuff that you may not see on your first run that will let you find new stuff for ages. Wind Waker. Charming and easy. Despite how much I don't like sailing or the Triforce hunt (in which case, go for the HD version if you can) it's a game that's hard to hate despite those things. Twilight Princess. Dark and gritty, this game will definitely be a good starting point in my opinion because it dials up the things that made the first two 3D Zelda outings great up to 11. With a good story, amazing dungeons, a lot of nooks and crannies to explore, and great characters, it's probably the best example of things from both Ocarina and Majora put into one. Skyward Sword (maybe). Only if you're not a veteran with the series and don't mind motion controls or the linearity. This game still has a well told coming of age story, the best Zelda (because you actually care about her in this game for once), and a pretty good length. It's not the best, but I adore it for the things many may forget it offers. A Link Between Worlds. Another easy one, this one was the turning point for Zelda games to adopt non-linearity and to me, combined traditional Zelda elements with new ideas that made exploring both worlds so much fun. Breath of the Wild. Easy to pick up since it doesn't hold your hand. Leaves exploration and story in the hands of the player. Plus it's new and available on both Wii U and Switch, so if you haven't touched the game yet, I'm going to assume you either don't have either system or just aren't interested.
@jaredkhan87436 жыл бұрын
Leopold Litchenstein ur comment made me think... Is there actually a hard Zelda?? Ive 100 percented like 8 of them and it's fun, but I realized that it's not necessarily which is such a shame. I hope the next Zelda comes with hard mode from the start even tho it probably don't 😂
@LeopoldLitchenstein6 жыл бұрын
Jared Khan The HD Zelda remakes did have that, which was nice. I would love a Skyward Sword HD with Hero Mode from the start with Link wearing his Skyloft outfit like Wind Waker HD did. But to me the only hard Zelda games are the old 2D games and maybe ALBW if you don't prepare yourself enough. My recent run of that game kicked my ass because I didn't arm myself enough for Turtle Rock's boss. Also BOTW can be difficult for the same reason, and Majora's Mask due to the time limit and the drawn out events
@Vorticy6 жыл бұрын
Jared Khan i hope you don't mean that ocarina of time and majora's mask were one of the easy ones to 100%. because the shooting galleries for those games are a nightmare with the terrible aiming mechanics. at least on the n64 i haven't plaeyed the 3ds version
@oliveiradmdiogo6 жыл бұрын
Vorticy On the 3DS remakes, the shooting is much easier beacause of motion controls. Even if you disable them, the aiming is more slidy which also makes it easier.

Ocarina. Plain and simple. Accessible, linear and timeless. From there you can really go anywhere you want imo. But I’m proud to say, I started with the very original Zelda on NES with the gold cartridge at my grandmas house that she had as long as I can remember (I was born in 1995) My next step was getting a game cube in 2002 or 2003 with the Zelda collectors edition disc… From there I tried majora‘s mask, ocarina of time, Zelda 2, and the wind waker demo. I was on able to beat any of these until 2006 when I walked into GameStop and saw a demo of twilight princess For GameCube. I dove in headfirst into that game after I bought it with my birthday money, and it’s all history from there. After beating twilight princess, I went on to play the other games on the collectors disc, although I still have not actually beaten majora‘s mask.

David Jones Cannot disagree more. Ocarina was the first Zelda game i played and i hated it so much i decided i didnt like Zelda games. Same thing happened with my brother. Botw is the best starter, unless you're not into open nonlinear games.

TheAlibabatree sounds like y’all are a couple of youngsters that can’t figure out or appreciate a classic. But botw is a great starter for sure, it just sounds like you’re not a Zelda fan, so far you’re just a Botw fan, which is absolutely fine.
@TheAlibabatree6 жыл бұрын
David Jones I would agree with that assessment, except for the "youngster" comment. My brother is 33 and i am 28. I admit to being somewhat of a casual gamer, but thats exactly my point. Ocarina is a very confusing and annoying game to people who have never played Zelda games before. I appreciate them now though.
@Ray035956 жыл бұрын
Yeah, N64 version can be confusing at times and there is a bit of a lack of direction. They fixed this in 3DS version. I think Windwaker is a good starting point. Straight forward in gameplay, good story, charming characters, average puzzle difficulty. Only one part of the game drags, but outside of that it's just overall a pleasure.
@Beren_Erchamion6 жыл бұрын
I agree most with this statement. If you start with the original N64 version of Ocarina there are a lot of obtuse moments in the game with no direction. A good example is how to get into Jabu-Jabu's belly. You have to get a scale that allows you to dive deeper, then use that to get to Lake Hylia where you find a bottle. You then show the note in that bottle to talk to King Zora to get him to open up the section with Jabu-Jabu. Then you have to catch a fish in your now empty bottle and empty the fish right in front of Jabu-Jabu. Throughout all of this there is no direction outside of small hints from Navi on how to proceed. The whole process is super convoluted and for someone new to the series it's super frustrating and an unnecessary barrier to progression. I would definitely recommend something like Wind Waker where there is never a question about where to go next to progress the story, yet you still have the Great Sea to explore to your heart's content.

I agree, OOT is not very straightforward, newcomers to the series may find particular dungeons confusing or grueling, and while it is an absolutely fabulous game the controls are somewhat clunky as well. I would recommend Twilight Princess or Wind Waker since both have better controls and easier dungeons. While OOT does tie everything together and set the standard for the 3D zelda formula, I feel it's best enjoyed if A) you grew up with it, or B) you have an established appreciation for the 3D zelda Franchise. Personally my first Zelda was Link's Awakening c:

But as she stated it was just very addicting to keep playing. She is on the verge on beating it and now she keeps asking if Ocarina of Time will come on the switch. Same as Twilight princess. I suggest to new comers whatever seems most appealing to them. She didn’t care about Zelda until she saw me fight Thunder Blight Ganon. That like spark of interest has now turned her into a forever fan. My personally suggestions would be OOT and Twilight princess. Especially OOT seeing how important that game alone is.

@Nosidda6 жыл бұрын
This is a great recommendation list. A Link to the Past is typically the game I recommend to newcomers if they like a cool SNES classic to play, but if they want a more modern Zelda, I typically recommend Twilight Princess, since that game seems to be a huge favorite among newcomers of the series. That said, if you don't mind the early 3D graphics of N64, definitely go with Ocarina of Time. Even if that one isn't your first Zelda, you'll want to play Ocarina of Time at some point, as it's probably the most beloved game in the series amongst the fans. Of course if you're interested in Zelda because you think Breath of the Wild looks cool, I'd say just play Breath of the Wild. If you're concerned about not understanding the story if you don't play other games, don't be. One of the best things about the series is how good it is at keeping each games story independent and stand on it's own. You can pick up and play nearly every game in the series while knowing nothing about the other games, and still understand it, Breath of the Wild is no different. The story stands on it's own. Naturally every game makes a bunch of references to other Zelda games, and includes Easter eggs and fan service, but you don't need to understand these things to get full enjoyment out of each game, Zelda is an extremely accessable series, so just play whatever game you're interested in. Just bear in mind though that while Breath of the Wild is the representation of the series future, it is also a massive departure from the traditional Zelda formula, so once you've finished Breath of the Wild, if you want to go back and play past games, just bear in mind that they are not the same as Breath of the Wild. Basically don't expect Ocarina of Time to be exactly like Breath of the Wild. Both have their own formulas, and both are great games for their own reasons.

I think Minish Cap isn't overrated or underrated - it's just rated. It got an 89 on metacritic, and an 8.9 user score - I can't see it doing any better than that or it would overtake some better games. Link Between Worlds and Link to the Past are both better games. Spirit Tracks is also pretty notable for its unique mechanics and how it integrates Zelda into the gameplay with some great writing, which is pretty awesome. I think these 4 are the most interesting 2D games to play in 2022. My personal recommendations for 3D would be Breath of the Wild for its exploration and gameplay, or Twiight Princess for its superior dungeons and best implementation of that Ocarina-like formula. If you can deal with motion controls and don't mind some late-game padding, Skyward Sword is also a good choice. Wind Waker is also nice if you follow the main quest, but I'd avoid a lot of the tedious and boring side-quests - kind of ruins the game as the side content and treasure charts are all of pretty low quality. Backtracking in the Wind Waker also feels really bad and you need to take notes if you decide to explore early - best wait until you're almost done the game for exploration to ease the pain there. This is a major problem that Link Between Worlds or Breath of the Wild solved. Personally, I feel like the NES, GameBoy and N64 games should be avoided - they are the most obtuse, difficult and clunky games in the series. These games are more likely to turn you off due to their low production values by modern standards, clunky controls, poor pacing and obtuse progression paths. Games like Link's Awakening or Ocarina of Time are ranked high mostly due to nostalgia and being groundbreaking games for their time, but the reality is that the newer games are better - just not as innovative as their time of release (but this is not something a new fan of the series should care about imo - that is something of more interest to game journalists and game designers...). You pretty much can't go wrong with any of the games on SNES, GameBoy Advance, DS, 3DS, GameCube, Wii, Wii U or Switch. All of them have aged well.

Nice recommendations! I’ve played nearly every Zelda game, and two things that are always consistent are A: They’re great games, and B: The games are never too much of the same. Every game in the series is so vastly different from all the others. I personally believe that A Link to the Past is the best 2D to start with, while Ocarina of Time is the best 3D if you want that traditional Zelda experience. I think what’s fun about playing each game is noticing all the little references to other games in the series. Breath of the Wild, for example, stands alone as its own game, and is renowned for its innovation. But, what’s also cool is that the game transforms into something completely different if you’ve played the previous games. You notice so many different nods to the rest of the franchise. All in all, the Zelda series is something that pretty much anyone can find a game within and enjoy it fully.

If a newer fan who had never any Zelda game at all and wanted to get into the franchise,I would get them to try one top down and one 3D Zelda and I the games I would tell them to try are For 3D Zelda:The Windwaker or Twilight Princess. For Top Down:A Link Between Worlds or Links Awakening.

I started with Phantom Hourglass, but I was very little so I didn't really liked it and didn't finished it. Years later when I was like 10 years old I picked up Twilight Princess without knowing what Zelda was and played it. It became my favorite game and the one that hooked me. Then came Skyward Sword which I really liked but not as much as TP. Then I decided to play OoT for the first time and fell in love with it, it became my favorite Zelda game to this day. Then was Windwaker which became my second favorite Zelda game. Then I payed Majora's Mask which I really like but not as much as OoT, WW and TP. Finally with BOTW which I fucking loved and became my second favorite Zelda (WW third and OoT first). With 2D Zeldas I can't say much because I haven't played them, but I am currently playing A Link to the Past and I'm loving it

The boomerang isn't missing, it's just been converted to a weapon type. You can still throw it and collect items, you just have to actively line up with it's return and catch it. Boomerang throwing is now a skill, but it can pay off. Also bombs are a magic power now instead of an item, so... feel free to basically bomb the shit out of everything and everyone. Especially after you upgrade the power, you can switch between round and square bombs and just spam them. It's actually an effective fight strategy in some cases.

The best way to see where to start is what console you have. All Zelda games have unique things that one another doesn’t have. No need to spend on an entirely new or old console when the one you have can do some great stuff!

I've been seeing a lot of people whether new to the series or not a gamer in general, seem to start at breath of the wild. Aside from the hype and the curiosity, even though the game can be quite punishing... It really does bring out a sense of discovery for most including a veteran like myself. It also has a gradual sense of progression in relation to that punishment. What I mean by that is the improved weapons that happen by progression as well as the learning curve and the satisfaction that happens with the player once they know their enemies. Plus I guess its the least restricted Zelda game like your video portrayed. So I would say that if you are the kind of person that has that "wide-eyed wonder" to explore, likes to see themselves progress as a player, and like the video said, is interested in the open world. Try out Breath of the Wild first. I would also say in extension try out Legend of Zelda (1) for the NES if you want a more simplistic 2D game. The very first game released and the most recent game released I would say invoke these feelings because you have the choice to take your own path, but can also take the linear path as an option. Those games don't force you on a set path. If you want something more linear and 3d (and possibly retro), I can vouch for this video recommending Ocarina of Time especially since it established a formula for the years that came afterwards with the gamecube-wii releases. All in all, all of the games generally have very charming characters whether lighthearted or darker in tone so wherever you start, you may find something to pulls you in to keep playing.
@DailyDungeonists6 жыл бұрын
Think though a newbie with no set path could become confused and disintrested so when suggesting these games people really need to point this stuff out and make it very clear - don't just make it opinionated on what you think is best. Think whats best for the new player. not yourself..

This is a very well done video! I have a lot of friends who aren't into Zelda, and a few have asked me where to start. I usually just say Ocarina of Time, but I struggle to pick with the 2D titles since I've only ever beat Minish Cap once. I am definitely using this video as a point of reference when introducing others to the franchise.

I could honestly agree with the games chosen for newcomers. Being a very seasoned gamer of the Zelda series, A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are definitely solid picks. I would say it can also depend on the person, varying from people who have never played a Video Game before or are seasoned gamers experiencing the series for the first time. In general, I would say Ocarina of Time, The Windwaker, or Twilight Princess are the safest games to get people invested into the whole series

@StormsparkPegasus6 жыл бұрын
Skyward Sword WOULD be my favorite game if it weren't for the craptastic controls. I was able to 100% the game, but the controls are just bad and are a stain on an otherwise great game. 7/10. Skyward Sword would EASILY be 10/10 if it had BOTW style controls. On the other hand, BOTW is a bit repetitive due to shrines and korok seeds, performs poorly (framerate), has story presentation issues (with virtually none of the story happening in the present day), and has some annoying mechanics like weapons being way too fragile, but the gameplay and controls are awesome. It's a good game, but it's more like an 8/10 - it's NOT a 10/10 flawless masterpiece. If I could combine the good parts of Skyward Sword with the good parts of Breath of the Wild it would be a perfect game. Ocarina of Time is an amazing game to this day...I still think it deserved the 10/10, and the only issues it has are a result of technological limitations at the time that could not have been overcome on the N64 - in other words they did the best job possible with the hardware that was available. Wind Waker I give 9.5/10 (held back slightly by cut content), and Twilight Princess I give 10/10.

For a first 2D zelda, play Minish Cap. It is far easier than A Link to the Past and it won’t mess you up so much if you stop playing and then come back to it after awhile. If you stop play ALttP after going to the dark world it can set you back awhile trying to figure out where to go.

It's funny because I had never played one growing up. My first inkling to play one was in fact the Four Swords 3DS free download title that I played with a friend who also got a 3DS when it was new in 2011. The next one I played was the Link Between Worlds on the Special Edition 3DS that I thought looked kickass so I bought it and I played it solely to get my money's worth out of it. I wasn't disappointed with it, but it was harder than I thought and I never could collect everything. Now I own Ocarina of Time for the 64 and 3DS, Majora's Mask on the 3DS, the original Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2 on 3DS virtual console and NES Classic, AND Link to the Past on SNES Classic. I haven't really played through any of these but I'm planning to at some point. I'm more reluctant too because I've spent the money on them but I hope I enjoy them as much as everyone says I should. We will see though. I have got Switch and Wii U but I chose to pass on Breath of the Wild. I just don't know if I should really buy any more Zelda games.
