great video, which one do you recomend the best that has a cast control idealy to cast tady 45 jigs, money is not an issue, right now i have a tern2 from accurate 500 model just wondering if there is something out there better ,wondering about a raptor mlx with cast control...is there a specific reason why you select star drags over lever drag...i feel lever drags cast well like a valiant 500 it just lacks cast control
@Dirty.Hookers
@Dirty.Hookers Жыл бұрын
Most people fishing surface irons will fish star drag reels because all you have to worry about is the tension knob to dial in the reel to your likings. Most lever drag reels don’t have a cast control dial, so at full free spool it’s more likely to back lash. But there are a handful of lever drags out there with cast control if you prefer the lever drags. My go to is the Daiwa Saltiga Star Drag, it has a really good breaking system built in behind the side plate for easier casting

@@2derekjeter2 so for yellowtail, I’m my personal opinion, you really don’t need the low gear option. I really like low gear reels for fishing bigger tuna. With smaller fish like below 80lbs, I’ve noticed are more likely to charge the boat, and being stuck in low gear while they start swimming at you it’s hard to reel fast enough to keep the line tight

Hello! What is the difference between your okuma sct and the phenix m1 inshore? I want to use it for throwing irons and general fishing too.
@Dirty.Hookers
@Dirty.Hookers 5 жыл бұрын
ButeoLineatus my m1 inshore is only a 7’9” which I really wouldn’t recommend for throwing surface irons. If you are trying to fish irons I recommend 8’ minimum, I personally don’t like casting anything shorter then 8’6 which is where the sct comes into play. The sct also isn’t so long to the point where it’s unfishable with other techniques. It’s still fine to trip yo yo and cast live baits if needed. The m1 inshore does come in a 9’ size but I personally haven’t felt one myself. 9’ is around the size of strictly irons though. Not that it can’t be used for other techniques, but the longer rods make it more difficult for getting extra leverage on the fish

Daniel Martinez that’s the perfect range for a nice setup. If you’re not in a rush, Fred hall show in Long Beach is a month away. The past 2 years they’ve been giving a free rod with the Lexa HD at the turners booth, and you’ll be able to get a free braid fill up on the reel. That right there would be a good set up to start with. And it’ll only be about $250 +tax. Other then that I’d say check out a turners outdoors store if there is one near you. A daiwa saltist star drag reel is I believe about $150-$175. And a California tri helix rod should be around the same price which should add up to the price range you’re willing to spend. But those California rods will have a crazy sale on them at the Fred hall show as well so I’d say try and see if they’ll give you the sale price. If not then maybe wait for the Fred hall show for some good deals. It’s an awesome experience. I’ve gone 4 years and i get more and more excited to go every year!

The19mustang67 yeah this video is pretty old. My metaloid I have I think 50 or 65 lb braid and my top shot varies for what I’m targeting. Rockfishing I usually do 30. Any kind of lures I always go 40. And if I fly line, I’ll use 25 or 30 with and a 6ft leader of matching size flouro carbon. I pair it up with the California the most but will switch it around and put it on lighter rods too. if you end up getting the PCH I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Both are great rods!

Good chance at knocking out sturgeon and striper on the same fishing trip November is prime for them and both can be caught year round as well but I’d say fall striper bite gets hot and sturgeon picks up. Dirty Hookers is the rod good for dorado yellowtail, and smaller tuna?
@Dirty.Hookers
@Dirty.Hookers 6 жыл бұрын
Noah van den Boom yeah it’ll work. The rod isn’t what you need to worry about. The biggest worry would be the reel. As long as you have a durable reel you’ll be fine.

steve gonzalez for rockfishing and fly lining a bait it’s amazing! I don’t use it for irons though. I don’t like lever drags for casting

Good video. I like the wrapping on your rod, you should do a video on that. Surprised to see the low profile baitcasting reels ... are those sturdier enough for 50 lbs Yellowtail ? Why no Avet lever drag casting reels ... seem like the most versatile do it all reel. No Seigler Made in USA guaranteed for life ? Finally, glad to see you are not using spinning gear ... the top end spinning reels are way expensive, and I prefer a conventional rod and reel.
@Dirty.Hookers
@Dirty.Hookers 6 жыл бұрын
rhino ranch I wanna make a video wrapping another custom rod. The bait casters can handle 50 lb yellows. But that’s about as big as I personally would fish for with them. I would prefer a conventional reel for anything over 30 just to be safe. I do like the avets but I only really like levee drags for fly lining a live bait and for 2 speeds. Other then that I’d rather have a star drag because they’re easier to cast. I actually do want 1 spinning set up mainly for poppers but you’re right they are very expensive and at that price I can get a conventional reel and rod for the same cost of a good spinning reel
@Clambelly
@Clambelly 6 жыл бұрын
thanks for the reply ... you owe it to yourself to take a look at SEiGLER star drag magnetic casting reel. Designed for long distance surf casting [ 200 + yards] and capable of casting heavy lead. Seigler also makes conventional star drag and lever drags reels. So many great products to choose from. Shimano TranX looks cool, but $500 can buy a lot of gear.
@Dirty.Hookers
@Dirty.Hookers 6 жыл бұрын
rhino ranch yeah I was between the tranx and the Trinidad and realized for $500 I’d rather have a conventional so I went with the Trinidad. Also there’s a lot more line capacity so that’s better. I’ll look into those reel. Thanks man!

I take about 3 or 4 rods depending on what we’re targeting. I’ve seen people bring more, and I’ve seen others bring less. All just comes down to what style of fishing each person likes to do. If all you wanna fish is bait, then you’ll only need 1 rod. If someone wants to fish surface irons if the fish come up, or yoyos if they’re deep, and still have a fly line set up to fall back on, that’s 3 rods right there, but they might’ve only used 1 or 2 the whole trip depending on conditions. All comes down to the person and what’s available to fish for
