Worked there as a Chevrolet flat rate mechanic in 1972 out of high school. The back building was the detail shop and body shop. I worked there until Yenko moved the dealership to McMurray about 6 miles away.

Love seeing history like this, thanks for sharing. Would be cool if it was fixed up to look like it used to, at least it still exists unlike lots of other historical places.

As a kid we lived in West Virginia. My grandparents lived in Bethel Park just north of Cannonsburg. We would stop by once in a while and walk the lot and see all the COPO cars lined up for conversions. I had no idea what history they were building at the time. I drove by about 10 years ago and it actually looked worse then. It’s a shame it cannot be redeveloped in some form.❤

I think with some effort, it would look a lot better, I agree. A few weekends of trimming down the growth and cleaning things up would go miles. As you said, some paint and cleanup would make it look nice while maintaining the nostalgic look of the place. That's something that you don't want to erase. The sign in the lot said "Southgate Saab" at one time (in addition to being a Yenko sign) as Mr. Yenko owned a Saab dealership at one time as well. The dealership operated until 1982 when Mr. Yenko sold it. Unfortunately, he died in a plane crash in 1987.

some of their conversions were actually done at the shell station down the street

Been there. Nice to see a video on it. Yenko placard is new. When I visited it was not there.

Great to see the place. I've seen it in car craft mags, hot rid mags. They showed the place in operation, Don Hence himself, workers, showroom , it was exciting to see back in the day. Back then I never thought it and Don Yenco would be gone. He's an icon in GM performance. Gone but never forgotten. I'd like to see some one of Don's family still around buy it and restore it. Turn it into a museum , fill the showroom with merobilia. Charge admission, have videos of Don and his ooeration. If GM fit it they being woke would do nothing but capitalize on his legacy and destroy his legacy.

The building looks like it has a Streamline Modern influence from the 1930s with the pylon and the semi-round overhang.

Too bad a classic car club couldn't come in and repaint the front on exchange for having weekly cruise in there. Would take long to just spruce up the front

Radiation from what?
@bobroberts23717 күн бұрын
@@odfarmboy According to the net, Tailings from uranium processing site. The site lies between Chartiers Creek and the Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad tracks. Uranium processing started in 1911 and ended in 1957 The Yenko building is at 575 West Pike Street. The uranium dump is behind the building / across the creek. Look for the pentastar shaped area
