This is a beautifully written piece of music by Schubert. Before Yeoul Eum had introduced me to the richness of Schubert's work I didn't fully appreciate him. I now rely on Yeoul Eum to enhance my appreciation of brilliant composers. As usual, her playing as well as that of Sunghyun Ho have given us a terrific performance of this duo. As usual, Yeoul Eum reminds us that both players have an equal responsibility here. There's no "lead" instrument and an "accompanist". The harmonies and intertwining of voices are wonderful.

If you love this piece so much, why aren't you looking at what Schubert wrote? It begins with the proper title 'Variations pour le Pianoforte et Flûte' and goes on with instruments (modern metal flutes and grand pianos are too brutal in timbre--like playing Chong Ak on a sanjo daegum). Many people came to think this was a silly piece because of such performances. When Schubert writes p(iano) (as in Var 7 bars 1-8), play soft, when he writes f (as in bar 9-12), play stronger. There must be a difference between f (as in bar 354) and ff (as in bar 346), otherwise Schubert would not have marked it thus. That should be the easiest thing in that piece. Why would you distort and even destroy Schubert's music???? Or do you think you know better than Schubert? -- Yes, I know, Pahud's and Nicolet's etc versions are also incorrect. If you read the music correctly, the supposed 'optimistic vibes' appear in a completely different light. Like the wayfarer in Müller's poem, the flûte is actually struggling and ultimately failing, then drowned by the pianoforte. You can almost hear the corpse drifting away in the creek. It is thus one of the bleakest pieces in history, unless you are convinced, you know better....
