@@jeff__w "lots" can take on a singular or plural form depending on context. In my example, it is used as a subject and the omitted/implied noun is "things". But depending on what is omitted/implied, both uses can be correct. -Lots (of things) have changed

@@danyoo22 At first I thought your reply was incorrect but, having thought about it a bit more, I realized you _can_ have a verb following an implied noun: “Lots (of employees) have quit.” But, in this case, where “things” is the noun, the sentence is really more similar to “plenty has changed” or “much has changed” so, really, “lots have changed” is not correct. It sounds very awkward. (You couldn’t say “many have changed” in that case either, even though you _could_ say “Many things have changed.”) Run the sentence by other native speakers of English (other than me) and see what they say.

"Lots has changed" 160,000 results "Lots have changed" 121,00 results So I am a little surprised you say "lots have changed" sounds very awkward to you. If you put some context around "many have changed" it won't sound weird either. For example I just Googled "many have changed their minds" and got 94,300 hits. Anyway from the 2nd link I referenced, take a look at the first answer provided by Cynthia Duncan who is a Language Professor (which I am not, I am an engineer by profession). I will cut and paste it here for you. --- A lot can be used as a pronoun. In that case, you have to take into consideration what noun it’s replacing. If the noun is singular, use a singular verb form. If the noun is plural, use a plural verb form. *The article was very long. A lot (of it) was incomprehensible to me. *We have 1,000 books in our collection. A lot (of them) were donated by patrons. --- As far as comparing lots vs plenty vs many vs much you need to keep in mind that lots & plenty can be used with countable and uncountable nounds whereas many is countable only and much is uncountable only.

@@danyoo22 Daniel, I am trying to _help_ you here. “Lots have changed” is correct but in the case where you have “lots of things have changed,” the transformation to “lots have changed” sounds awkward. It seems that it has to do with the noun “things.” (A linguist could probably explain it but I can’t.) “Many have changed” can be correct in lots of contexts with many different nouns but, again, it sounds awkward when you’re changing the sentence from “Many things have changed.” I appreciate that you copied the answer from Cynthia Duncan and she’s correct but I am not sure her answer applies in this very specific case. I think maybe the problem is that, to a native speaker of English, “lots of things” in this context doesn’t really refer to a _collection_ of things but to the whole situation (i.e., one thing). So, “lots of things have changed” sounds right because “have” matches “things” _but_ “lots” (without “things”) sounds better with “has” because, again, it refers to the whole situation. (We simply wouldn’t say “Lots have changed” as a synonym for “Lots of things have changed.) Google will give you some really good information but it might not provide the right answer to the specific question. Find some native speakers and show them: “Lots of things have changed” → “Lots (has/have) changed” and see the answers you get. (I might ask a friend to post the question on HiNative or Hello Talk and, if I get some answers, I’ll let you know.)

선생님 안녕하세요! 영상에서도 언급 해주셨다시피 ‘얼마 전’이라는 게 되게 애매해서 저한텐 some time ago랑 not long ago 가 쉽게 와닿지 않네요ㅜㅜ a while back 은 들었을 때 몇 달 전 혹은 몇 년 전까지도 될 수 있을 것 같은 느낌인데 some time ago랑 not long ago는 아예 감이 안옵니당.. 저는 며칠 전이라는 의미로 the other day 많이 쓰는데 그것보단 더 과거의 느낌인가요?? 혹시 선생님께선 이 두 개를 사용할 때 얼마만큼의 기간을 표현하려고 사용하시는지 말씀해주실 수 있나요? (몇 주인지, 몇 달인지...) 개인적인 기준인 것 알지만 좋은 참고가 될 것 같아요.

선생님 죄송한데 뜬금없이 질문좀 하겠습니다...평소 라이브아카데미 영상을 보며 영어공부하는 1인으로서 빨모쌤의 명쾌한 답변이나 관련 영상이 올라오면 좋겠다는 바램으로 여쭤봅니다. 어제 영어로 표현을 하다가 갑자기 너무 궁금해서요... "나는 어제도 노래를 불렀어" 와 "나도 어제 노래를 불렀어"는 분명 다른 의미잖아요? 그런데 이걸 영어로 표현하면 왜 저는 "I sang a song yesterday, too" 나 "I sang a song yesterday as well" 그리고 "I also sang a song yesterday" 이정도 밖에 생각이 안나는 데요...결국 이표현들이 다 위의 2가지 의미가 다 포함되는 중의적인 의미가 있는거 같아서요... 어떻게 해야 명확한 구분이 될까요? "나도" 가 아닌 "어제도" 를 강조하려면 어떻게 해야되는건지요? "I sang a song even yesterday" 이런식으로 표현하면 맞는건지요?

I sang a song even yesterday 맞습니다. Even yesterday I sang a song 이라고 쓰면 "어제도" 가 더 강조되는 느낌입니다. 나 요번주에 계속 노래 연습했어. I practiced singing every day this week. 나도 요번주에 계속 노래 연습했어. I practiced singing every day this week too. 나는 토요일에도 노래를 연습했어. Even on Saturday, I practiced singing. 나는 토요일하고 일요일에도 노래를 연습했어. Even on Saturday and Sunday, I practiced singing.

중의적인 표현을 써도 문맥상 이해 가능할 거예요. 굳이 확실히 구분하고 싶다면, 다음과 같이 말하면 어떨까 싶네요. "나는 어제도 노래를 불렀어" [노래를 또 부른 행동]을 강조하려면 I sang a song again yesterday. [어제]라는 시간을 강조하려면 I sang a song even yesterday. "나도 어제 노래를 불렀어" So did I. I sang a song yesterday.
