영어 연습가이드 #48 [ HARDCORE ] - "THE 80/20 RULE"

이번 하드코어 연습가이드를 통해 지난 몇 년간 저에게 개인적으로 크게 도움을 준 "80/20의 규칙"에 대한 이야기를 전해드립니다.

"A while back, I came across something that has really helped me make changes and move forward over the last couple of years. It’s a very well known phenomenon called “The Pareto Principle” or(also known as) “The 80/20 rule”. The principle states that 80 percent of effects come from 20 percent of causes. Basically what that means is that 80 percent of what we gain comes from 20 percent of what we do. Sounds pretty inefficient, right? Well, apparently, this is a widely observed phenomenon across pretty much all areas. 80 percent of the sales in most businesses come from 20 percent of the clients. 80% of the land in most countries is owned by 20% of the population. 80% of the farm commodities in most areas come from 20% of the farms. I can't explain it but there's something about this 80/20 rule that seems to be deeply rooted in our system. Now you might be thinking, "OK Fine". "That's the way things are. What's the big deal?" Well, 80% is a big number and I just couldn't get over the fact that 80% of what I was doing wasn't amounting to anything if not holding me back in some way. So, for the past couple of years, I've been somewhat trying to mitigate that. I've been trying to identify what my 20% was and focusing my resource on it and I have to say, I believe that with a well-thought out strategy and execution, we can all do much better."

A while back, I came across something that has really helped me make changes and move forward over the last couple of years. 얼마 전에 우연히 찾게 된 것이 있는데 지난 몇 년 동안 많은 변화를 주고 앞으로 나아가게 저를 많이 도와줬어요 * a while back : 얼마전에(a long time ago보다는 최근!) * come across : 뭔가를 마주쳤다, (우연히 지나가다가 찾았다) * make changes / move forward : 변화를 주고, 앞으로 나아가는 것! 2. It’s a very well known phenomenon called “The Pareto Principle” or(also known as) “The 80/20 rule”. "Pareto 원칙" 혹은 "80/20의 규칙"이라고 불리는 아주 잘 알려진 현상이에요 * It's a well known ------- called "______" 3. The principle states that 80 percent of effects come from 20 percent of causes. Basically what that means is that 80 percent of what we gain comes from 20 percent of what we do. 이 원칙이 말하기를, 결과의 80%는 20%의 원인에서 비롯된다는 것이에요. 기본적으로 그게 무슨 말이냐면, 우리가 얻는 것의 80%는 우리가 하는 일의 20%에서 온다는 얘기예요. * The principle/law/regulation/rule + states ...... : state는 formal하게 얘기하는 것! 원칙이나 규칙에 대한 정의 내리는 얘기를 할 때 state를 많이 씀! * Basically what that means is...... : 4. Sounds pretty inefficient, right? Well, apparently, this is a widely observed phenomenon across pretty much all areas. 80 percent of the sales in most businesses come from 20 percent of the clients. 80% of the land in most countries is owned by 20% of the population. 80% of the farm commodities in most areas come from 20% of the farms. 꽤 비효율적인 것 같죠? 근데 거의 모든 영역에 걸쳐서 널리 관찰되는 현상이라고 하더라고요. 거의 모든 사업에서 80%의 매출이 20%의 고객으로부터 발생하고 거의 모든 국가에서는 80%의 땅을 인구의 20%가 소유를 하고 대부분의 지역에서 80%의 경작물이 20%의 농장에서 나와요 * appently : 내가 직접 보고 느끼고 사실로 받아들인 건 아니지만, 듣지하니 이렇더라 느낌! 5.
