#RNASYeovilton #RNAS #AIRSHOW #Harriers #SpanishHarriers yeovilton airshow
The sight of the iconic Harrier Jump Jet once again graced the sky's over RNAS Yeovilton on 13th July. The Spanish Navy Harriers made their first Royal Navy International i ten years!
In October 1972 the Spanish Navy took a step forward integrating into the Harrier V/STOL program developed by Hawker Siddeley. In 1987 12 AV-8B were procured and formed the core of the 9th Squadron. The first three units arrived on October 6th 1987 and were dubbed 'Cobras'.
The Harrier II PLUS has a totally redesigned and larger fuselage. New wing fuel tanks were incorporated and Rolls-Royce F402-RR-408 engines installed. The plane has carbon-fiber composite leading edge root extensions wings (LERX).
However, the main feature is the nose with its state-of-the-art AN/APG-65 pulse Doppler radar with different configurations: air-air, air-surface with an advanced multi-mode, all-weather, day and night system. In 1996 and 1997 8 further 'Harrier' II PLUS were built by Construcciones Aeronauticas S.A.
The Squadron has since clocked up more than 50,000 flight hours. The Spanish Navy intends to continue upgrading its 'Harrier' squadron with better versions in order to keep this valuable tactical asset fully operational.

These are the modernised Harriers of the Spanish Navy AV-8B Harrier II Plus ( modernised avionics, radar, increased missile capability, data link, targeting pod and sensors)...it is still to this day a brilliant close air support aircraft, especially in amphibious military scenarios.

Thanks for sharing this, somewhat ironic that an aircraft we invented and developed can now only be seen flying in foreign colours. The Harrier was, and still is a beautiful aircraft and I still believe we scrapped ours way too early.

How unusual is a display like this in Europe? Tried looking it up but couldn't find info. I'm glad I was there to see it, first proper UK Harrier display I'd seen since Farnborough 2012? Cheers for a great video so I can re-live it again! Stay safe everyone. ✈️

Nice and deft flight of a Harrier, or Matador, as the Spanish Navy calls it. In this case, Matador means Bull Fighter. Thank you very much Elwyn R for his great posts.

Such elegance in this aircraft, in a way the F-35 never will be (regardless of what sort of service it goes on to provide). What a run of form Hawker had, from the pre-war Fury, to the Hurricane, the Typhoon/Tempest, the Sea Fury, the Hunter, the Harrier. Before succumbing to the same fate as most great British companies.

In total agreement, F35 - what a backward step, separate lift engines and looks like a cow on a push bike. Who was the blinkered idiot who cancelled the supersonic P1154?!!! Hawkers, just shows you can build beautiful but still pack a punch

@@baselhammond3317 TSR2. . . don't get me started!!!!! Why the very urgent rush to destroy all the jigs etc??? Thank goodness they at least had the foresight to save one so we can go and just stand in front of it!!! The sixties, when we lost everything aeronautical. @@baselhammond3317 Looks good but will it cut the mustard or be out of date by the time it comes into service. What really p.....s me off is why do they have to name these things after previous planes - Typhoon, Tornado now Tempest, sheer laziness but Sydney Camm might be pleased!!!

It is a shame it wasn't grounded earlier. Though its really cool when flys it wasn't politics that got rid of it; it was its poor track record. "Over the last three decades, it has amassed the highest rate of major accidents of any Air Force, Navy, Army or Marine plane now in service. Forty-five Marines have died in 143 noncombat accidents since the corps bought the so-called jump jet from the British in 1971. More than a third of the fleet has been lost to accidents." Alan C. Miller and Kevin Sack Times Staff Writers
