Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a new direction for the much loved franchise, and if my ten hours with it is anything to go by, I don't think fans will be disappointed.

This game is known to be getting absolutely destroyed in reviews before it was on sale, due to the changing of combat system and the removal of beloved characters in the series. However, after it went on the market, it was praised in Japan for having one of the best stories in the entire series, (on par or even better than Yakuza 0) and the characters have really grown to be loved for their weird charms and successful distinction with the original cast. It was seen as one of the rare successful examples of changing protagonists midway through the series. And the story of this game fits with its own plot: rising from the rock bottom. People of the original series maybe bummed by the changes, and I certainly understand then. Still, it's too good of a game to miss simply because of that.

(long comment ahead) I've actually played and finished the Taiwanese version of the game earlier this year! I wanted to share my "review" (please don't hesitate if you have any questions) I've played Yakuza 0 (my favorite), Kiwami, Kiwami 2 and 4. I haven't played 6 so there might be innovations that I wrongly attribute to this game that originated in Yakuza 5 or 6 (FYI) Positives - Yokohama is an amazing playground and it has a really cool and distinct identity from other locations in the serie - Main character is very endearing, he is total opposite of the calm and cool Kiryu, he is a hot-headed but very "noble" character - Best intro and vilain characterization in any Yakuza game I've played. It really does a good job getting you into the experience - Wacky insane side quests with hilarious dialogue - you now have a proper side quest menu that tracks every quest individually and shows you where to go on the map (or at least give you some hints) - They do a good job giving all members of your team a cool back story and you can level up your relationship with them which will unlock new jobs and dialogue options. Cons - New combat system starts out really strong but experimentation is totally hindered by the backward job change system Every job has its own level. If you are a "cook" level 30 and you want to try "bodyguard" you will start your job at level 1. It's a massive power and health decrease for your character. Weapons are all job specific as well, so if you don't have a good weapon for the class, you will hit like a wet noodle. - I found weapons to be quite hard to come by in the later stages of the game which further accentuated the problem above - Enemies and bosses are quite boring, the latter just being HP sponge. The best strategy is to have 3 DPS character and one healer and just spam your highest hitting attacks. I never felt the need to have a "buff/debuff" support character or something more exotic to spice up my team composition - MONEY! Money is everything in this game. You buy weapons with money, crafting requires huge sums of money, when you die you lose half of all your cash (!), and there are is even a mission late in the game that will require you to make a certain amount of money to complete - money is not easy to come by through regular fights or the story. The best (and only real efficient way) to "farm money" is through the new secondary mini game that has been added. It gets tedious extremely fast, although there is an important side quest associated to it. - pacing from mid game onward is extremely slow. To be fair, it was a bit of a chore around the mid to late game and I had to force myself to reach the latest chapter. Bosses taking extremely long didn't help either Good news is that I never felt really the need to grind to just finish the story - I played on PS4 pro and although the models of the characters look good, the textures in the environment and some of the animation are looking really dated. This engine will need a big overhaul going forward. Although I had a good time with the game, I have to say that the issues that I listed made for quite a tedious experience in the later part of the game. I would still recommend it to people who love the Yakuza atmosphere and style of humor, as the writing is on point, but I don't think it will be for everyone due to the pacing and new combat system. Cheers :)

Awesome, I own 0 and none of the others. So I could go 0, then Kiwami 1, then kiwami 2, and finally like a dragon?
@CRAM079
@CRAM079 3 жыл бұрын
@@tubular7752 yes for the most part. Like a dragon might be confusing because there will probably be characters from 3-6 that appear that Xbox players havent had a chance to play those games yet. But going in chronological order will not hinder you if you start from 0. Also that baby bit is actually a sidestory from Yakuza Kiwami 2. So like I said it pays to play from the beginning.

What did you think of the turn based? I am currently on chapter 14 of Yakuza 7. I've previously played all the Yakuza games 0-6 and Judgment and Fist of The North Star. I've also played Psersona 4 and 5 so Im familiar with this system. To this point Ive really really enjoyed Yakuza 7 and I do like the combat system, but I really loved the previous combat system. However, I do think with this system you get your companions and they are in my opinion the strength and heart of this game. Im not sure, still on the fence about this new system. Again, I like it, just not sure if I liked it as much.Kind of curious what other Yakuza fans are thinking?
