On January 4, 1963, Nukha district was abolished and its territory was given to Vartashen district, and the city of Nukha was established under the republican subordination. In 1965, the independent Nukha district was reorganized. In 1968, the area was renamed Sheki.
The absolute height rises to 3683 m in the watershed of the Main Caucasus Range.
Sheki borders Dagestan in the north-east. Yevlakh-Balakan railway and highways pass through Sheki.
