Sheki is one of the oldest cities in Azerbaijan. Located in the northeast of the country. In medieval sources, his name is Shaki, Sheka, Shakki, etc. The city of Sheki has long been called Nukha.
The name Sheki is connected with the name of the Sak tribes who moved to the South Caucasus and from there to Asia Minor through the Derbent Pass on the northern shores of the Black Sea in the 7th century BC. Founded in 1743, the Sheki khanate was the strongest feudal state among the Azerbaijani khanates.

In 1930, the administrative territorial division of the Azerbaijan SSR was changed and the Nukha district was formed. On January 4, 1963, Nukha district was abolished and its territory was given to Vartashen district, and the city of Nukha was established under the republican subordination. In 1965, the independent Nukha district was reorganized. In 1968, the area was renamed Sheki.
