The key to the great majority of Yes songs is... happyness. They project a joyous world! ...usually in a complex, beautiful and baroque way so hard to explain, so good to hear :) _I listened hard, but could not see_

If I remember correctly, that first Yes song you reacted to was “Owner of a Lonely Heart”. For us lifelong Yes fans, that’s the least representative song of Yes. But I’ve loved you getting into so much more of their catalog.

I agree. I have a few bands I like seeing reactions of, but I often cringe at the first song people choose. For Yes, it's Owner of a Lonely Heart. For the Alan Parsons Project, its Eye in the Sky. They were hits, of course, but sooo unrepresentative of what these bands meant to prog rock.

Many, including myself, consider this masterpiece to be the single greatest album of all time. I bought it the day it came out, and I still play the cd every time I'm driving. I still have that original album. I cannot adequately express the impact this one album has had on my life. I saw it performed live as well. Listen to Yes...really listen...it will change your life. Great reaction BTW. ✌😎

Yes, I have found for all the really great bands of that era, it does not matter how young or old, what country, race, ethnicity or tribe, anyone with any musical soul will be an instant fan of great, classic rock. YES is around the head of the class, very few with their musical chops, for me, when I want prog, it is either them, Pink Floyd, ELP, King Crimson or Genesis, all those bands are at an insane level of musical virtuosity, listen to any of their best songs and tell me you are not a fan. Chord is awesome, keeping great music alive. I just wish Dee would make a guest appearance sometime, I miss her.

Nice reaction. Since you're a drummer, it'd be interesting to hear your analysis of Bill Bruford's choices in the drum track, particularly how his percussion helps in the transition from section to section in the song. On a related note, BB retired from drumming a few years back because he said that he got to the point where he could no longer envision something new to play. One of his big motivations as a musician since he started professionally was to come up with new approaches and fresh ideas. He considered doing something not seen or heard before his primary "job" as a drummer. Evidently, after 40 years of playing he began to struggle to find that newness, and decided to hang up the sticks. Anyway, I personally believe Bruford's drumming was an essential ingredient in the success and creative energy in the band. Yes went on to create more great and innovative music with a new drummer after 1973, but Bruford really set the tone for the band's attitude toward composition, imho.

In fact, I thought you had already reacted to this one. I'm glad you hadn't. However, I know there is at least one more classic track that you have not yet reacted to and that's "South Side of the Sky," which is a fan favorite and sooo awesome. Back me up, people. Rick Wakeman: "Close to the Edge was not just one piece. It was a whole scenario of three pieces. And "And You And I" is like a mini-quintet-sonata in a strange way. It has different movements which all go into each other. The object was of having a piece of music that was everything that the Yes critics hated us for and the Yes fans loved us for, which was emotion ... The thing about technology going ahead of musicians is it has taken away the human element ... That was a wonderful period of time."

"YES"!...the pinnacle of auditor/brain titillation. Been listening to their music (over-and-over) for 50 years now and they are STILL THE BEST band I have ever heard! Jon Anderson (Zen Master/vocals+), Chris Squire (greatest bassist-of-all-history), Steve Howe (most versatile "stringed-instrument-musician ever), Bill Bruford/Allen White (amazing drummers) and then (maybe the greatest keyboardist of all time) Rick Wakeman had that "something" that has never (and will never) be duplicated. Imagine being 15-16 years old in 1975, listening to music like "The Beatles", "Doors", "Deep Purple", "Joni Mitchell", etc....and then I get my hands on this shit! MY MIND WAS BLOWN! Changed my musical life! I was so worried that they couldn't reproduce it live. Man, was I wrong! So, check-out some of their live stuff (though good video/audio is hard to find back then) and enjoy YOUR lifelong journey with "YES" as much as I have. Thanks for your show and I have enjoyed watching/hearing your reactions to this amazing, under-rated band. Reminds me, of me, 50 years ago.

The first time seeing them they did this album in its entirety, there were 12 of us that went and the guy in the row in front of us had a big bag of powdered mescaline. His row, our row, and the row in front of him, tripped their brains out through all of Tales From the Topographic Oceans, then an intermission is soon followed by Close to the Edge. The encore was Roundabout. I have no clue how we got home but one of the most incredible psychedelic experiences ever for me, I still remember Rick Wakeman in his glittering robe, moving within an enclave of keyboards and moog synthesizers, sending unreal sounds into the cosmos. Man, those were the days, all this great 70s music you listen to, every show I went to back in those days cost from $3.50 for 4 hours of raging Hot Tuna to $8.50 for the original The WHO or classic Pink Floyd, the sweet smell of good herb was in the air and the atmosphere was so different, hardly any cops, no guns to worry about, just peace, love and a great time. YES is dope, with or without some. Try Siberian Khatru from the same album or the title cut if you have not heard it as yet. Great stuff and times, Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

If you want an insight in how yes create music check out the "Going for the One" sessions videos to get a feel for how this works back in late 1976/77. Also, Yes Acoustic video narrated by Rick Wakeman (keyboard player) although this comes much, much later. Rick's sense of humor and delivery is just so funny commenting on the other band members. But these are for you in answer to your question how do Yes come up with this stuff. It's not reaction material though.
