when i was 18 myself and my best mate got back to his house after a long session and he said listen to this, lights off sound up full and he played close to the edge, to this day when i listen to it it reminds me of my great times of my youth. Nearly 70 now and it still blows me away. To my mate John Patterson wherever you are still think of you everytime i here this. Sammy Evans.

I was there in Chicago. I feel sorry for the world of people who weren’t there to experience the visual as well as the living sound they created. It was memorable all these 50 years later. You’d have loved it, i’m sure.

I believe it's about life and the Circle of Life. From Nature we arise (the river/waterfall/birds chirping sounds at the beginning). Then the chaos of Steve Howe's amazing guitar chops directly after that, representing the literal chaos of being born and being a baby, early childhood and into adolescence. Then life working and working and working which nicely resolves at 16:34 with a sense of acceptance, wisdom and well-being representing having mellowed-out into old age. I think the return of the river/waterfall/birds chirping sounds represent death and the return of our corporeal form to Nature. Not just life itself, but many things are best described as 'a circle'. The question remains...what does the big slowdown at 8:28 represent (the movement entitled 'I Get Up, I Get Down')? My best guess is it represents the notion of biological reproduction (i.e. eventually giving birth) which allows the 'big' Circle of Life to keep going on and on. It almost sounds like an 'incubation' period, the Child in the Womb. "The lyrical content became a kind of dream sequence in a way. The end verse is a dream that I had a long time ago about passing on from this world to another world, yet feeling so fantastic about it that death never frightened me ever since." ~ Jon Anderson

Great athletes!!! ah the 70s!!! saw YES 35 times that decade. Inducted into the hall of FAME way to late... What's up with that?? Same for the Moody Blues!!! But what the hell what do I know? I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band.....

I always thought Jon Anderson’s lyrics were selected on sound and rhythm, rather than meaning...like a Kerouacian (is that a word?) stream of consciousness of sound. There might be some thread of meaning, but to focus on what that might be is secondary to the ambiance created in the arrangement of the words. The genius, I believe, is that he doesn’t just throw up a word salad that doesn’t have any linguistic meaning. The stanzas are structurally recognizable, but the actual meaning is subject to how the words, integrated to the music, make you feel. At least, that was my hypothesis in the early 70’s, under the influence of some really good Mescaline. And, don’t get me started on the “Revealing Science of God”.
@joaomedina13 жыл бұрын
@@jonbennett8785 very well put. I read a very funny book by Rick Wakeman, where is says that none of them understood "little Napoleon" - Jon Anderson's nickname. They didn't understand his thick accent nor his lyrircs. But it was all good.

I’m sorry to everyone who has left a positive comment but I think it was probably better to just leave it as a poem. The instrumentals don’t jive with the lyrics. It just sounds like they threw a bunch of sound behind the lyrics.the part I enjoyed most was the beginning with the birds chirping and the sounds of nature. Other than that it just sounds jumpy

I'm here for a reason, I love these old songs but I'm tired of these boomers thinking they're all that just cause they had all these awesome bands making good music. Most people prefer 3 to 4 minute songs. Most of those types can’t handle “The Edge”, or expanding their Lexicon. Maybe stick to music with that matches the way “U” spell out texts. 🤓
