In 1971, if you happened to be listening to the radio, you would hear say... a Crosby, Stills, and Nash song, then the next song would be a YES song from Fragile or the YES Album. Those were the days. I miss good music.

The band became complete on this album with Rick Wakeman's genius on the moog synthesizer. I saw ARW ("Yes Featuring Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman") here in Manhattan perform that song. Knowing how complex it is, and especially the delicacy required for those heavenly vocals in the bridge, I spent a few seconds muttering "Holy s**t!" under my breath, because I just couldn't believe they were going to do that song. And they did it, better than perfectly, including all those lovely vocals. I can die happy.

South Side continues to rise in my opinion with every listen. Jon's vocals are some of his best in this song. Some of Steve's hardest playing - brilliant. South Side of the Skies is one of those songs that will always send chills up my spine. It’s one of their best as well as one of their most ominous and mysterious sounding. Especially Alan White on the piano. So rich and heavily inspirational. Love the way Yes incorporates classical music into a kick butt song. It’s SUCH a winner.

Well Linda, I'd always thought it was Rick Wakemen naturally but It seemed as though Nick had said on the video that White played the piano part. Maybe I misunderstood what he was saying. Whatever the case Wakemen is still a wizard on the keyboards.
@lindazee2 жыл бұрын
@@stevecowder4774 yes, agree!Wakeman is an excellent pianist and keyboardist. Drummer Alan White had not yet joined YES when Fragile was recorded. (His first official new recording with YES was Tales from Topographic Oceans.) Bill Bruford was at the drums for all the Fragile songs. Bruford is also a musical wizard... one of my favorite drummers. He is so unique.

Hey thanks for the confirmation on White. In fact all of this prompted me to look things up yesterday and I did see where White had joined Yes after the release of Fragile. I probably should have brushed up on some of the other band members. But White was a very good drummer, may he rest in peace.

@yes_head2 жыл бұрын
Back in the early 70s, when I was around 8 years old, my older brother (who I shared a bedroom with) would play this album constantly. I can still remember when it would get to this song he'd say, "OK, listen. Hear the door slam? Isn't that cool? Now there's some wind. Isn't that cool?" I'd be like, "Uh yeah, OK bro. Whatever." But clearly it left an impression, because Yes became my favorite band when I was a teenager (and in the late 70s Yes was becoming quickly unfashionable!) But what makes Yes amazing during this period was how they were able to make complicated music accessible. Their early MO was to combine top notch vocals with top notch instrumental music, but they also never lost sight of things like hooks and good melodies, which they learned from the Beatles (and which too many other prog bands forget about.) That vocal interlude features Jon, Chris, and Steve with Chris taking the lead on those high "La la, la la la"s. Eddie Offord was alway nervous about putting a microphone in front of these guys, because to his professional ears their pitches weren't always spot on (Steve especially!) But it all comes together in the mix, as they say. Nick, if you want to hear more Steve Howe chunky rhythm guitar, track down the one album from his previous short-lived band, Bodast. Great stuff, and featuring a couple pieces of music that went on to be used by Yes.

I agree 100%. The back and forth section may be described as “trading eights” if Rick and Steve each take eight bars to solo before tossing the lead back to the other. I could be wrong about that, though. Either way, it was a great moment for Yes.

Great reaction to a great song. A rare exception in Jon’s writing: not much metaphor or deep mysterious spiritual meaning. Actually based on a documentary he was watching like on PBS about this trek into the dead cold of of a mountain. And how they all died. He said he was stoned while watching it and it actually chilled him and he was inspired to write it right away. And one of the few tunes that just all came together. The middle section was I think something that Rick brought in and then Chris did his usual vocal arrangement magic (that was one of his biggest contributions besides his bass playing and singing: he had experience with choir and was good at these beautiful vocal arrangements).
@lindazee2 жыл бұрын
After Chris Squire died, I couldn't ignore the big hole in Yes' vocals. It was so glaringly absent, and the songs sounded flat as a result...not in the pitch sense, but in the no fizz sense. Yes' vocal dynamics were so much about Chris Squire's singing. Those understated yet rich vocals of his and his smooth delivery are sorely missed.
@RabbiSteve1Ай бұрын
Thanks for reacting to this song two years ago. It’s an underrated song from the album. And they never performed it live until about 20 years ago. And I got to see it performed. BTW, Jon has spoken about the writing of this song in interviews. It is one of the rare songs from that era, where the lyrics are actually telling a story. He was watching some documentary television special on public tv while in the states, about this mountain expedition, I think on Everest, where everyone died. He said he was stoned at the time, but the story moved him and he wrote this song from the point of view of the leader of the expedition as they all froze to death. And once again, the voices, while arranged by Chris, if there was three part harmony, which there is there, is also featuring Steve. He doesn’t have the greatest voice, but his part adds a lot.

South Side of the Sky was early prog rock and was my radio introduction to Yes way back when the radio played long songs in the early/mid 70's. With new ears I was drawn into this music and Yes. The sound, music the long format, the tempo and time changes, the ride were all so great, wonderful and completely new to the world. The only way we could figure it out is if Yes was a band from another planet in the future. But from that time I knew this band could speak to my soul and I became a Yes fan. Then purchased fragile and found "Heart of the Sunrise" and the others and never look back. Yes redefined music for me and remain a Yes fan forever. So this was an early experiment going toward their long format epics. You really should treat Fragile as an album work.

Ah, this was my favorite Yes song until I watched your video of Awaken (sorry to mention that again, but Awaken deserves the number one spot). And now it's moved to #3 after I saw your reaction to Gates of Delirium! Haha. I love the changes in this song, especially how the chord changes going into the chorus each time that is completely not what one would expect to come next. Just a brilliant piece. Thanks Michael and Nick! Oh and for the songs you haven't done yet, 3 of them could be reacted to in a matter of a couple of minutes 🙂

2002,the "Full Circle" tour...Holmdel,NJ and then my stomping grounds,Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia,MD...they pulled this out with We Have Heaven leading into it and both nights the crowd lost their collective shit. Epic back and forth between Howe and Wakeman on the outro jam both shows. Great times.
