This was fascinating! Like everyone else, I wish we could combine elements of both, for the definitive!

I wish there was a mix of the original that features Chris’s vocals that are more prominent in the RT Version

Thank you so much for the work you have done on this. I was surprised at the amount of subtle differences you highlighted which I just hadn’t picked up. A fascinating listen which made me appreciate the song more. Thanks again.

My ideal version would have bits from both, but overall I like the choices on Return Trip better. The mixing is clearer (or maybe I just don't like the loudness of the original) and there is more separation of the instruments so the bass and drums stick out more. I also think Trevor's voice has more character and Benoit, while a good singer, is a Jon Anderson clone (same with their current singer Jon Davison). The new lyrics are a nice addition to the RT version. However, the two changes that I really don't like on RT are in Part 2: Sad Night at the Airfield. First is how the drums and the momentum of the song completely stops after the lyric "that last intake / of air" whereas in the original version the rhythm continues. Second is how Trevor deleted Steve's slide solo from the end of the song. I really like that solo. So part 2 in the original is more consistent (despite the bpm changes) and more of a "rock" feel to it, where as the RT version is more dramatic (no pun intended).

Actually, the use of the outro of part one on the reprise of the RT version IS probably an hommage to Chris since it is the part, he wrote for "we can fly from here" during the Drama sessions.

I like the 2018 version slightly more just for the stronger Squire vocal mix.

When I first heard the original album, I was surprised by how much Benoit David sounded like Trevor Horn in parts of the songs, and their voices blend quite well on this. Benoit is a bit of a vocal chameleon, as I heard him sing with Mystery and he sounded like Dennis DeYoung (Styx) a bit, and then he sounds more like Jon Anderson on the classic Yes numbers. There are definitely bits of the Horn revisit that I like and prefer slightly, but I'm not sure it was worth the whole effort. Interesting video and bedankt for the post.

I definitely prefer the 2011 Fly From Here overall. I honestly don't like the extra vocals in "Sad Night at the Airfield" on Return Trip. They're distracting and they make the song less atmospheric and emotional than the 2011 version. Furthermore, as much as I adore Trevor Horn, his voice is no longer the same as it was back in the 1980s. Benoit's vocals are just so much stronger and more powerful, in my opinion (and this really shines through on the EP From a Page as well!).

Respect would have been for Trevor to phone Benoit and tell him he's re-doing it. This will always feel dirty.

About "Bumpy Ride", you didn't mention it but the high-hats are LOT louder and prominent, distractingly so, on the Return Trip version when compared to the original.

Thanks, I didn't notice that during the side by side listen. (Honestly I try to skip or ignore that entire track when I listen to it...)

Ben's vocals are just better by far. Should never have been re-done

Thanks for your opinion. I personally like the Return Trip better but I do get that Trevor has been pretty cut-throat in getting this to work, both in sacking Oliver Wakeman to get Geoff on the album, and in trying to nullify Benoît's great effort by redoing the album.

@cleciusviana76232 ай бұрын
