@@Rowenband According to Steve Howe, Wakeman's monologue was unplanned. The rest of the band did not know he was going to do it. Chris Squire's widow and daughter was supposed to speak, but because Rick went on for so long, they didn't get to. If that is true, it was very rude and disrespectful to the memory of one the greatest bassist of all time.

I was very fortunate to meet Chris Squire backstage after a Yes concert in August, 2014! I had been (and still am) a huge Yes fan since 1974. His playing even inspired me to try my hand at bass. This song always reminds me of the old turntables. “We Have Heaven” on this album was a Jon track where he blends 7 or 8 vocal tracks. The song ends abruptly with a door closing. If you had your turntable on automatic, Heart of The Sunrise ended like this video when the stylus lifted. If you set your turntable to manual it would keep running and suddenly a door would open and We Have Heaven would finish. Took me about a dozen plays before I heard it. HoTS is a great track.

Bruford ran away from YES after Close to the Edge!! I think he seemed to feel that they were beginning to get lost in these crazy arrangements and esoteric concepts. So he landed right in King Crimson's lap with more crazy arrangements and the austere concepts of Robert Fripp. Bill has since repented of his criticism of Close to the Edge. History does show it as one of the great gems of the decade after all....

It’s right up there with John Bonham’s right foot and Ian Paice’s single strike roll, and as identifiable as Chris Squire & Geddy Lee’s signature Bass sound! Bill Bruford is a Drum God of the highest order, even higher than Neil Peary imo. Neil come third, after John Bonham in Rock anyway..

Glad to see someone who appreciates Bill Bruford (and Chris Squire) as much as I do--and most King Crimson fans. And, yeah, he went pretty much straight jazz before he retired. One of his best KC songs that isn't heard much is "One More Red Nightmare". But my all time favorite is listening to him and John Wetton on the studio version of "Easy Money" during the middle instrumental break. It doesn't reach out and grab you, but the more it is listened to, the more the skills exhibited are appreciated--at least to me. I would request those songs, but, as you probably know, Fripp blocks just about everything.

There’s an interview with Bruford in the current or previous Rolling Stone on-line magazine. It’s worth a view. In the past, Bruford has said that he had to pitch his drums up so high because Squire’s bass tones had such a ringing, treble sound. He felt that the drums wouldn’t be heard otherwise. Bruford’s aversion to playing anything twice makes this performance fascinating. You’ve listened to 3 of the 4 group pieces on Fragile; only Long Distance Runaround remains. The rest of the album is 5 solo pieces, one for each member of the band. The bass solo piece, The Fish, is always listened to in conjunction with Long Distance Runaround. Fragile is the first Yes album with Roger Dean artwork. And, it includes this unique liner note: “Bank Loan arranged by Brian Lane”. Mellotrons and Minimoogs don’t come cheap. Finally, find the live version of the Heart of the Sunrise performance by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe at Mountain View, CA in 1989 on KZbin. Squire wasn’t with ABWH, but Jeff Berlin does an admirable job filling in for an ill Tony Levin on bass. Enjoy.

I was born in 1952. This timing set me up for a life that centers on unequivocal greatness when it comes to musical appreciation and the embrace that holds my favorite genres. In my teens I held YES, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, RUSH, and so many voices beyond my small vision, that I had to admit I was a product of this flame; Fueled by Caffeine, Powered by Music. This naturally embraced the thousands of miles I would eventually train through, if only to celebrate Ear Heaven. I set so many records with this music in my head. Some still stand today. As does The Music. I turn my vinyl every day I am able, and relive the amazing combination. My blood, my mind, my neural synapse and my effort is held here and lives forever.

Thanks for doing this song, Justin. I think the bass riffs that drive this song are amazing. And Bill Bruford's drumming here is so beautiful. The section you point out is incredibly interesting... as you say it builds up, and the point where he starts playing on the bell of the cymbal is so funky. And Yes, Bill did play on Starless as you say; he was in King Crimson from 1972-74 then 1981-84 and again in the mid-90s. He was also the drummer for Genesis on the Trick of the Tail tour, when Phil first stepped out behind the drums. It was only for that one tour, though. I also love Jon's dreamy melody, too.

And Bruford uses the traditional grip for the sticks - the left hand stick is either cradled between the index finger and the third finger, or the third finger and the fourth finger, depending on the drummer's preference, so you're hitting the snare with a little lighter stroke that the matched grip - holding the sticks like clubs in both hands.

I see what you mean about those synth sounds. Sometimes things are included in a musical arrangement because of novelty value rather than good taste. In 1971 synthesisers were still becoming established as a rock instrument and were often used in a way that overemphasised their presence rather than to blend well in the mix. Similarly, arbitrary panning effects were used on The Yes Album as a way of drawing attention the the fact that it was in stereo rather than mono. It was a way of saying "hey, listen to this... we're using the latest technology", which of course would inevitably seem dated in years to come. However, these albums have managed to age well regardless.

In this song 'heart of the sunrise' you hear the definitive talents of everyone. Bruford's fills are unique and Squire's bass is up front, Wakeman's orchestra treatment of keyboards, Jon's angelic but powerful voice and Howe's versatile use of the gibson round out the equality of talent. Most bands will never have equal talent with the different instruments like Yes. I could say that for other prog bands as well.

Quite enjoyed the technicality of that. Ashamed to say that although I love my Prog, I'm really not that familiar with the Yes catalog. Think I've only heard maybe five tracks at most. - Phenomenal musicians though. That I do know.

Fair reaction JP. For sure there’s no other song out there like this one - classic rock in the truest sense. Now seriously, I’ve been harping on you to react to “The Camera Eye” by Rush. Still waiting! You’re in for a treat I assure you. Let’s call it, ‘mature prog rock’. 😉 By the way, you’re doing a great job on your reactions. Keep stylin’ and profilin’. 👍🏻

Bill Bruford - master of the offbeat. his timing is just different - but it works. Loved to have seen him when he toured with Genesis in 1976

Nope. Yes was first, then King Crimson, then Genesis. That's not including the other stuff he did with other musicians and his solo stuff in between those.

What an opening to a song! Its so well constructed, energizing and engaging, you feel exhausted imaging yourself trying to play along that fast and clean!! Now, that's known as great music!

My favorite track from "Fragile." Often feel "lost in the city" and find rejuvenation from "the heart of the sunrise" away from it all.

Bruford and Squire are absolute animals. Fragile and Close To The Edge are such incredible albums. You should check out Chris Squire's solo album, specifically the song "Lucky Seven".

Hey Justin, checking out some of your older reactions Agree with you on Bruford. His phrasing is so cool on this. First I wanted to be Steve Howe, later I wanted to be Bill Bruford.😁 I saw him at least 10 times and had the opportunity to chat with him in an intimate nightclub towards the end of his touring days.

Some of the most beautiful and haunting tracks from Wakeman on the Mellotron. Incredible drums from Bill, and Chris Squire with a bit of tremelo on his Bass guitar make this one of the standout tracks from Yes' early days. Another pure "goosebump inducing" song from the early 70's. That makes it a classic in my book!

There are some isolated tracks of Bruford and Squire. Those 2 were just transcendent. Best rhythm section of all time

You understand this piece well..I'm 66 and when I first bought this record I also at times don't like some breaks in it. Also same for close to the edge album..but you have to remember this was pioneer days in studio work..have a listen to KZbin prog rock brittannia... where wakeman describes the band and also how they wrote the songs and all the arguments and problems fitting it together.

As a prog fan naturally I've listened to my share of YES. Saw them live in 1994... Great show and I can tell you Heart of the Sunrise is better live. Musically I like the song but lyrically it's it's like a lot of YES songs where the lyrics are secondary to the music. They can crank out a lot of atmospheric instrumentals but the lyrics are just weak. My favorite extended piece of their's is And You And I. Fragile is probably their best 70's album. 90125 from 1984 is their most commercially successful album and I really enjoyed it (sounds like an 80's Genesis album). The song Changes is a masterpiece from that album! Great review and I pretty much agree with most of your comments... I just don't find a lot of their lyrics interesting... and the instrumentals can get a little repetitive.

Bruford, Squire, Wakeman, Anderson was by far the best lineup this band ever put together, and this was the first YES number I ever heard (and on my first ever trip). Thanks for the nostalgia and the nice analysis. This has a special place in y heart because YES is my favorite prog rock band ever. (Though Pink Floyd is probably better in many ways.)

As a freshman at NC Stste in 1971, I went to see a concert of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After...with an opening act by a band called Yes. Yes totally upstaged Ten Years After. Many people left after Yes. Including me. Such composition. Such musicianship. Such execution. I immediately became a Yes-Head. I was 18..I’m 67 now. No band touches Yes in my opinion. One thing. You rightly hold Squire and Bruford in high esteem. But Steve Howe is easily one of the top 5 guitarists on this planet (and maybe a few others) and you seem to miss that. Not necessarily in this song but top 5 for sure. Nice cover of this song.
