Interesting differences of opinion here about JDB’s acoustic version of this majestic Holy Bible song. Yes it’s true that there are sudden shifts of volume in the vocals but these are of course a bit disguised in a studio recording, which is compressed and mixed to a more constant level. There’s also the question of live amplified sound here. James is using an older Taylor 414ce and you can hear the piezo quack on it, which gives a certain harshness to the guitar sound, despite his glorious playing. And the vocal sound has got a strange EQ that makes his voice very audible and clear but also cutting. If you’d been in a room with him playing with neither the guitar nor the vocal amplified, this performance would have sounded belting but still smoother. Personally I love this version, you can hear all the details of playing and phrasing so clearly and that amazing interaction between Richey’s lyrics and James’s musical soul is so strong you can almost touch it.

all acoustic guitar pickups sound crap in my opinion. if theres no drum kit these live acoustic gigs should really be micing the acoustic

Throughout my life I have had this musical struggle between the rough and the beautiful - the manics is the only band that has ever managed to combine them both. Perhaps Pink Floyd did it at Pompeii too, but I'm not sure.

Jamesatgigs I know man. I'm just saying it doesn't work well acoustically. It's a post-punk/power pop song that needs a full band to make the song great.

With that voice, the songs work with any backing

I think it'd work but he'd need to reinterpret it, he's trying to do the same version with only an acoustic

Unpopular Opinion: I don't like a lot of James' acoustic covers of their older stuff because he tries to compress his voice rather than just using his head voice or lowering his volume and therefore you have these harsh cuts and jumps in his voice that kind of ruin the experience for me? I don't know if I worded that right but I hope you get my drift.

Shifting to head voice would completely rid the song of the dynamic power it has. Distorting his belt/mix the way he does in the chorus is the way he does it with the band and conveys the song's intended intensity. The audio bouncing around is cos this was recorded with either an in built or mounted mic which will never replace line in recording for these kind of gigs
