The 9-1-1 medical response system is being crippled by delays getting urgent response patients out of an ambulance and into the hospital. Ambulance "wall times" can often extend for hours
Assembly Bill 40 (Rodriguez) addresses critical patient offload delays by holding hospitals to the same kinds of response time standards that we have to follow as firefighters and paramedics.
In a critical emergency, every second counts. Delays can be a matter of life and death. But paramedics throughout the state are forced to stay with patients for sometimes hours on end waiting for the hospital to take in the patient.
By keeping firefighters and paramedics stuck at the ER, hospitals are risking patient care while padding their bottom line at taxpayer expense.
As firefighters and paramedics, we are asked to meet national standards for response times. It’s time for hospitals to meet the same kinds of standards.
