In 2019 we went to see Jon on his 1000 Hands tour. We did the meet and greet, which was well worth it. Jon was very gracious and friendly, a real sweetheart of a guy. I sat in the 2nd row center directly behind Jane. It was a great show, very energetic!

Simon & Garfunkel don't even think about creating that wonderful intro with the guitar and keyboard, and the solo guitar that always sophisticated. The song kind of reborn into something so advanced.
@RickTransit6 жыл бұрын
I'm not at all disappointed with the song - just this curtailed version of it. The orginal cover was a magnificent 10 minute epic - I particularly love the convoluted intro where Chris Squire starts playing America from West Side Story under the Simon and Garfunkel tune. But it's a nice document and great to see them having fun!

Just for the record, this was NOT Yes' first TV appearance in 18 years. Maybe the first time in 18 years for this lineup, but the Trevor Rabin era lineup appeared on TV numerous times in the 80's and also during the Talk era. And there was also the Around The World In 80 Dates video, from the Union tour,which was shown on, I think, Japanese TV.
@herrbaronvoncruzer11 жыл бұрын
18 years for this lineup. We know that Steve Howe doesn't acknowledge the existence of any lineup that doesn't include him. :-)
@Kohntarkosz11 жыл бұрын
It says about a minute and a half into the video that "This is Yes' first TV appearance in 18 years". It doesn't say anything about this lineup. Either the producers don't acknowledge the Trevor Rabin years, or their ignorant of the band's history. Most likely the latter. Like the time Howe and Bruford appeared on Regis & Kathie Lee and had to actually explain the distinction of being "original members" (even if Howe himself isn't actually one).
@jaminjef8 жыл бұрын
Steve can be an ass like that!
@mikemustang37918 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, he never gave any props to Rabin. Sad.
@Kohntarkosz8 жыл бұрын
Well, there's a couple different ways of looking at. Steve could have said "Well, yes but I didn't actually join the band until just after the second album, so I'm not actually an original member". Or they could have been thinking it'd be too complicated to explain things like that in the context of a live TV broadcast, where you've got like five minutes or whatever to plug the new album or whatever. When a documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd came out in the late 90's, I saw their old drummer Artimus Pyle on the news promoting it, and they did the same thing, identifying him as "an original band member", even though he too didn't join until after the second album. I think producers either don't research this stuff carefully, or they're just trying to simply the explanation for people who aren't as concerned with the minutia of such things. I imagine there's a lot of people watching at home who don't concern themselves with such minutia, and probably don't even care that Steve Howe or Artimus Pyle weren't "original members" of the respective band. "Oh, he was in the band in the 70's, that makes him an original member".

Baron that isn't the complete "America", that is quite a bit more than 3 minutes if the guitar solo is included. This song was chosen because it is a song created by people from New York City, and is basically about coming to New York City. There's another video where they're rehearsing 2 songs probably right before they did this - "Long Distance Runaround [with no Fish]" and this

In November of 1971 me, and a group of hooligans I was with broke into the Ritz Theater on Staten Island by breaking the concrete block barrier of the shaftway. So there we are, backstage, and I am standing next to Rick Wakeman. So, I casually asked him if it was okay for us to hang out there, and he replied something to the effect of, "Sure man, I don't care.". Two minutes later, a security guy told us we'd have to go back to the front row, where we enjoyed the rest of the concert. I was standing almost right in front of Chris Squire for the rest of the show.

His leaving the band had nothing to do with his voice. Yes had planned to tour for their 40th Anniversary with Jon in 2008, but it was cancelled because he had to go through cancer treatment. They had Benoit David "temporarily" replace him and they briefly renamed the group Howe, Squire & White of Yes, but the last dates were cancelled because Squire had to have surgery on his leg. By the time Squire was well and the band proceeded on another tour, Jon was out for good and the band called themselves Yes again in 2009/2010. Jon Anderson has being performing solo shows ever since along with performances with Rick Wakeman and a newer band with Jean-Luc Ponty. And now Anderson is reuniting with Rick Wakeman and Trevor Rabin as ARW for a U.S., UK and European tour with a full band playing the music of Yes. Anderson also recently released a new album collaboration with Roine Stolt of the Flower Kings that's absolutely fantastic!!! Anderson still sings as great as ever and is currently at a new creative peak!!!

This is just horrible. There is nothing cohesive about the sound. There are playing moments which are shipwrecks. There are timing disparities. I admire the players, especially in the studio, but outdoor gigs are invariably disastrous. JA's vocals are starting to show the signs of age. The vocal sub-harmonies are flat and off key. Howe's guitar sound nauseatingly floury. I'll stick with the albums.

Their cover of America was first released on the Age of Atlantic compilation album in 1972, then later re-released on their own compilation album Yesterdays. Aside from "Yes-ifying" the arrangement, their playing was just brilliant. Bill Bruford was still on drums then, and I think this may have been the first thing they recorded with Rick Wakeman. I've seen them play it live several times; unfortunately it's never had the energy of the recorded version.
