I started thinking of songs for my upcoming show, The Symphonic Rockshow at The Smith Center on Oct 1, 2021 and thought of doing this song. It will get a full symphonic arrangement, but before then, my process begins with a complete deconstruction of the original song. So as usual, I put the song under a microscope and began sculpting keyboard and guitar sounds and learning the parts. I don't have to go to this level, but I'm twisted like that. It's a fun challenge for me.
At any rate, I went the distance and recreated the entire song, trying to get it to sound as close to the original song as possible. I used almost entirely stock Logic Pro X plugins, except for some of the synths....recording 76 tracks of instruments and vocals many of which were double-tracked parts.
I used my Ernie Ball Music Man Luke guitar, a Fender Jazz bass (Sorry Chris Squire...I don't own a Rickenbacker), and a Shure SM7b microphone through an Avalon 737sp preamp. My usual studio setup.
The only thing I didn't re-create from scratch were the orchestral "hit" samples (I found an isolated stem of those online). To be fair, Yes used Fairlight samples on the original track :)
I hope you enjoy this madness. If you like this stuff and want to see more like it, you can drop me a donation via the links below. Also, come and hear the full orchestral version of this at Symphonic Rockshow and many other great classic rock songs on Oct 1 in Las Vegas. You can get tickets at www.thesmithcenter.com
Now....onto adding strings, horns, winds and orchestral percussion...

PS: Special thanks to Nina Di who filmed me with my iPhone 12. I edited video in Final Cut Pro X. I look better as a cartoon.
