Wakeman played the organ at St. Martin's church in Vevey, Switzerland on "Parallels" and "Awaken" while the rest of the band played in the recording studio

Videos covering many hours of actual studio footage of this album exist on youtube: names are: "Yes Studio Sessions: 1976 - Going for the One Sessions - Full Video" and PLAYLIST: "YES 1977 / Going For The One Sessions "

Oh, and Justin, this is one 70's Yes song where it's known that Squire recorded it on his natural finish, 1972 Fender Jazz. 😁

I love this track... whenever I get a nice pipe organ sound on a keyboard I typically blast this out.... love Rick's solo... he's busy as hell but it works in many cases. Awaken is THE track on the album and it's a pure delight for organ fans...

It’s great your going thru the album…that’s the best way to get a feel for their project! You’ve got Wondrous Stories and my Fav Awaken…it’s an epic…listen when you are able to breathe… ❤ Awaken is fantastic Live..front row…moving Jon does a more recent concert with Todmobile on KZbin…pretty good😌 Hope you get it✌️😊

Yeah, the bass lick is just an A-minor riff. I guess if you slowed it down and swung it you could call it blues-y. Steve's guitar part is what he's done with Yes from the beginning -- improvising licks to embellish the arrangement, which then becomes the lead guitar part. And yeah, it's another super dense recording drenched in echo. Although I'm one of those who was fascinated by how Yes could weave all these different parts together. The individual parts are usually interesting unto themselves, but put them all together and amazing things can happen. I won't add to the whole church organ discussion, other than I'm sure when their engineer told them "Yeah, we can record the St Martin's organ" I'm sure at least Wakeman and Jon Anderson looked at each other and said "Fuck yeah!" 😄 Studio outtakes as well as video exists of Jon and Rick working on some organ and harp duets, and I think they tried to cobble together a promo video for "Parallels" of Rick on the organ with Chris, Alan, and Steve at Montreaux (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnK0dX9jqduXbLc)

Squire's criticism was justified: 'This Album has too much reverb'. But it is a very good Album, which of course in particular is thanks to the Masterpiece 'Awaken'. 😀Kind Regards, Heinz (from Germany). Your Channel is very good. 🌳🥀🌱🌷 Also kind regards to your lovely Cat. ❤

I'm beginning to worry you won't like "Awaken". But my advice is, like you did with the Rush albums, give the whole thing a few more listens. That seems to be true for most progressive rock. But it will be well worth it. Cheers!

I am feeling the same way and I requested this album. I thought this was an open and shut case start to finish a brilliant album but as you state this is prog and not just 3 or 4 minutes of here ya go and it's over and on to the next song...

I've always loved this song, it was interesting the piece you read out at the start that it was a Chris Square 'discarded track' from his solo Fish Out of Water, where the piece stated that it had no guitar licks on the rough version. Steve Howe kind of monstered the guitaring on the Yes version, meandering mini guitar breaks throughout and his outro guitaring is a bit special. Looking fwd to your views of Awaken, it's long, a lot going on, but not as long as the brilliant Close to the Edge.

For some reason, I've always liked the "Parallels (Rehearsal)" version off the Deluxe Edition a bit better. The bass/drum groove kicks more and the whole thing isn't overpowered by organ.

Such a great organ solo from Wakeman, not many songs with a church organ solo…

The hard part about it is that it's prog 😂. Just think in thirty yrs you will be loving it.

I love the raw power and presence of the church organ and always have. I guess I'm just a bit weird and different in that way. Any Yes tunes where the church shows up I'm all ears. It possibly comes from the fact that growing up my mother was the pianist and organist in our church. A few listens as with some Rush stuff I think you would get it. Cheers bro...

The organ may be a bit high in the mix but it sounds great. I think Chris played a Fender and Steve played a strat.

The Opening section is good. The Title track and Wondrous Stories are the two that grab me most though .

the sung part of that song by the time of this album sounded a bit not bad but standard fare. On the other hand the instrumental has novel bits, well ok the singing has some unexpected moments.too i did say it's not bad. On the other hand, Jon and Vangelis was around or after that and i like it a lot.

I love church organs just as much as the next guy (I guess???). For me, it’s used better in other yes songs. I agree with you, it’s too much in your face in this song. Maybe if it was peeled back it might have worked better? I don’t hate it though

I do love Yes, but sometimes it's like each musician has a solo album in a Yes album 🤔 they are great though 🤘
@dolfinpt Жыл бұрын
Lol! That’s about right!!! Yes music is made up of each member contributing SO much in the song! It’s a lot to take in and I have ..for over 50 years😊 Some people say Yes music is for mature listeners 😉 I love that you can hear something new every time you listen to a Yes song!❤

To my ear, the organ is kinda JPan - unnecessarily harsh! 😂

No thanks. Too many sounds competing for the same space imo.

That’s the problem with this album. They decided they did not need a professional producer, and produced it themselves. Big mistake. Each member wanted their instrument heard and it be came an unbalanced mess. Then they tried to save it by adding a thick layer of reverb, which IMO made it south even worse. The album’s songs sound great live, but I can’t stand the studio versions. I wish a good producer would get hold of the tapes and re-mix it.

@@souldreamer9056 👍Yep! Layers of instruments and vocals, combined with a weird mix plus a ton of reverb everywhere. This is why I never liked this album (and I must also say that I am not really impressed by the songs it contains😉).

First I love the songs and music on this album! Glad Wakeman is back. But never loved the production, vox seem buried. Awaken is better but sparse playing out of most songs. IMO

I think it’s Anderson’s vocal phrasing of wordy and disjointed lyrics that ruin it for me. I also thought certain elements were really pushed high in the mix giving the song a jarring quality.
@yes_head Жыл бұрын
I think Chris was mainly responsible for the lyrics and vocal melodies, although I'm sure Jon contributed. If you listen to Fish Out of Water you'll see that he had a habit of using odd vocal phrasing. He'd sung in church choirs as a kid, so it's not that he didn't understand vocal arranging. I think as a backing singer in Yes he just got used to odd placement of the harmony vocals which he then carried over to his lead vocal writing.
